Chapter 12: What He Didn't Say

Aurelia's POV

The second planning meeting was scheduled for Friday, this time with an actual board liaison present.....a stiff, efficient man named Mr. Whitfield, sent to confirm the sponsorship details before Kael's division wired the funds. It should have been a simple meeting. Fifteen minutes, signatures, done.

Bianca made sure it wasn't.

She arrived without being invited, again, settling into the chair beside Mr. Whitfield before either Kael or I could say anything about it.

"I hope you don't mind me joining," she said, already opening her folder. "I've been so involved in the theme direction, I thought it might help to walk Mr. Whitfield through the vision myself."

Mr. Whitfield glanced between the three of us, clearly unaware he'd wandered into anything more complicated than a budget sign-off.

"The vision is already finalized," I said evenly. "I can walk you through it in two minutes, Mr. Whitfield, if that works."

"That would be fine," he said, checking his watch.

Bianca smiled and slid one of her laminated mood boards across the table anyway, angled toward him instead of me. "I just think it's worth mentioning the alternate direction we discussed. Mrs. Blackthorne's version is lovely, of course, but I had some ideas that might elevate things further, given the size of this year's guest list."

Mr. Whitfield looked down at the board, polite but confused. "I was told the theme's already locked with the vendors."

"It is," Kael said, before Bianca could answer for him. He didn't raise his voice.....he didn't need to.

"Aurelia finalized the theme three weeks ago and has since renegotiated every vendor contract around it, on a compressed timeline, without going over budget. That's the version we're sponsoring." He turned his laptop slightly, pulling up a spreadsheet, and slid it toward Mr. Whitfield instead. "Here's the full breakdown, if you'd like to see the numbers behind it."

Mr. Whitfield studied it for a moment, nodded, and made a note on his own pad. "This looks solid. I'll sign off on the transfer today."

"Wonderful," Kael said, already closing the laptop, the matter settled before Bianca had a chance to open her mouth again.

Bianca's smile stayed exactly where it was, fixed and pleasant, though something behind her eyes had gone very still. "Of course. I only meant to offer options."

"I appreciate that," Kael said, in a tone that made it clear the conversation was over.

Mr. Whitfield gathered his things, thanked us both, and left with the efficiency of a man who'd gotten exactly what he came for and had no interest in whatever else was happening in the room. Bianca lingered a moment longer, gathering her mood boards slowly, before offering a final, tight smile and following him out.

The door clicked shut, and it was just the two of us again.

"You didn't have to do that," I said.

"I know."

"You did it anyway."

"She wasn't going to stop on her own." He said it simply, no weight to it, like he was stating something as plain as the time. "And I wasn't going to sit there and let her rewrite three weeks of your work in front of someone who actually matters to the sponsorship."

I sat with that for a moment, something in my chest loosening that I hadn't realized was clenched.

"You've done that before," I said slowly. "Haven't you. Not just today."

He didn't answer right away, which was answer enough.

"The mood board meeting," I said. "The seating chart. You've been doing this the whole time....quietly, without saying anything about it."

"It's not a big thing, Aurelia."

"It is to me."

He looked at me then, really looked, and something passed between us that had nothing to do with vendors or seating charts or board liaisons at all.

"I don't like watching people talk over you like you're not in the room," he said finally. "You've spent this whole meeting being twice as prepared as anyone else at that table, and somehow you're still the one who has to prove it.....that's not fair. I'm not going to pretend it is, just to keep the peace."

I didn't know what to say to that. I sat there with my hands folded in my lap, feeling something warm and unsteady spreading through my chest, and I understood, with a kind of quiet dread, that this was becoming harder to walk away from every single week.

*****

I left the meeting later than I meant to, and by the time I got back to the estate, Cassian's car was already in the driveway, which was rare enough that I felt a small flare of hope before I even got through the door.

I found him in his study, tie loosened, a glass of scotch already half-finished on the desk in front of him.

"You're home early," I said.

"Meeting ran short." He didn't look up from whatever he was reading. "How was the gala thing?"

"It went well. Mr. Whitfield signed off on the sponsorship."

"Good." A pause. "Kael handle himself okay in there? Mother mentioned Bianca had some concerns about the direction."

I chose my words carefully. "There wasn't anything to be concerned about. The plan was solid."

"That's what I figured." He finally looked up, offering a small, tired smile. "You've always been good at that. Making things work when everyone else is busy overcomplicating them."

It was the closest thing to a real compliment he'd given me in weeks, and it landed strangely, sitting beside the memory of Kael saying almost the exact same thing an hour earlier, except Kael's had come without effort, without distraction, like it was simply true and worth saying out loud.

Cassian's felt like something he'd noticed on his way to thinking about something else.

"Thank you," I said anyway, because it was still more than I usually got.

He nodded, already looking back down at his papers, already somewhere else. I stood there a moment longer, waiting for him to say something else, ask something else, notice something else about the day I'd had.

He didn't.

I went upstairs alone, the warmth from the conference room slowly cooling into something quieter and more complicated, and I lay in bed that night turning over the difference between a man who complimented you in passing and a man who fought quietly on your behalf without ever mentioning it afterward.

I fell asleep before I could decide which one frightened me more.

Aurelia's POVCassian came back to us just as Robert Ellison walked away to join another conversation, his laughter still echoing behind him."There you are." Cassian said it to Kael, not to me, his eyes barely touching mine before moving on. "Robert mention the Q3 numbers? He's been cornering half the room about international all night.""He did." Kael's voice stayed even. "Also mentioned he hadn't met Aurelia yet. Took care of that for you."Something flickered across Cassian's face, quick and hard to name. "Should've done that myself.""You usually remember."It wasn't sharp, the way Kael said it....just plain, but plain landed harder than sharp would have, and I watched it land."I've had a lot on my plate this week," Cassian said, jaw tightening slightly."I know. I didn't say otherwise.""Didn't have to." Cassian reached for a glass of wine off a passing tray, took a slow sip, his eyes flicking toward the cluster of investors near the bar before coming back to his brother. "Robe

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 18: The Introduction He Forgot

Aurelia's POVThe final walkthrough went well, and even Vivienne didn't have much to complain about, Diane confirmed that all the vendors were on schedule, and the venue coordinator went over the layout with us twice. By the time we left, I finally felt a little calmer than I had in days, that steadiness didn't survive the evening.Cassian had a reception that night.....a smaller affair than the gala itself, thrown by one of the firm's longtime investors to celebrate some milestone I hadn't fully followed the details of. He had asked me to come with him almost as an afterthought, his invitation felt less like a request and more like an instruction on his schedule.Wear the navy dress. Investors like it when the wives attend.I wore the navy one anyway.....some habits took longer to unlearn than others. The event was held in a private room at one of the city's older hotels, all dark wood and low lighting, the kind of room built to make important men feel even more important than they

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 17: What Shrinking Costs

Aurelia's POVI didn't sleep well after the dinner. I lay awake replaying Vivienne's voice at the table.....*these things happen, some women simply take longer than others*.....and Cassian's silence sitting right beside it, just as loud in its own way.By the time I gave up trying to sleep, it was almost eleven. I sat up against the headboard, phone in hand, and called Rosa without really deciding to, she picked up on the second ring, her voice thick with sleep she hadn't bothered pretending she wasn't in."Aurelia? It's nearly eleven. What's wrong?"And that was all it took, the dam I'd been holding up all evening simply gave out."She did it again," I said, my voice breaking halfway through the sentence. "In front of guests this time.....Bianca's mother, the garden committee women....all of them, sitting there while Vivienne asked the whole table why I still haven't given Cassian a child, like it's a factual question anyone's entitled to an answer to.""Oh, sweetheart.""And Cassian

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 16: Going Home

Aurelia's POVI stayed at Rosa's longer than I meant to, long enough that the soup went cold twice and she reheated it once, refusing to let me leave on an empty stomach even after everything I'd just handed her to carry."You'll tell me if it gets worse," she said at the door, holding both my hands in hers. "Whatever worse looks like. You won't try to carry it alone just to spare me.""I promise.""You say that so easily, I taught you better than that." She squeezed my hands once, hard, then let go. "Go on. Before it gets dark."The drive back to the estate felt longer than usual, the kind of quiet that gave a person too much room to think. I kept turning over the look on her face when I'd said his name.....Cassian's brother.Rosa had repeated, like the words themselves didn't fit together properly in her mouth, she'd known Kael....she'd loved him, in the careful, protective way she loved anyone I brought into her house. And now she knew exactly how impossible the whole thing had bec

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 15: The One Who Knew

Aurelia's POVI went to Rosa's the next afternoon, mostly because I needed somewhere that didn't feel like it was watching me.I sat at her small kitchen table, the same table where I used to do my homework as a child. In front of me was the same chipped blue mug that had always been mine. She poured soup into two bowls and sat across from me then she waited, just as she always did, she never asked questions directly. Instead, she let the silence encourage me to open up on my own."There's my girl," she said, wiping her hands on her apron and pulling me into a hug that smelled like flour and lavender. "You look like you haven't eaten a proper meal in a week.""I've eaten.""Standing up, alone, at a kitchen counter doesn't count as a proper meal, Aurelia." She pulled back and studied my face the way she always did, like she was reading something written just beneath the skin. "Sit. I made soup."I sat at her small kitchen table, the same one I'd done homework at as a girl, the same chi

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 14: The Laugh That Gave Us Away

Aurelia's POVI said yes to Thursday. I told myself it was only because the florist's price would lock in otherwise, and that was true enough to let me believe it, even if it wasn't the whole truth. The meeting was at Blackthorne Global, a small room on the thirty-second floor with sample centerpieces spread across the table.....white roses, deep green foliage, tall glass vases that caught the overhead light and scattered it across the walls. Priya had already gone through half the options with the florist by the time I arrived, and Kael was standing near the window, sleeves rolled, looking like a man who had absolutely nowhere else he'd rather be."You made it," he said."I told you I would.""You also told me you'd think about it for two days before deciding. That was one email.""I'm efficient when the price is about to lock in."He almost smiled at that, and something in my chest eased at the sight of it, the tightness Vivienne had left behind in the gazebo finally starting to lo
