Chapter 13: Eating Alone

Aurelia's POV

Cassian had promised Thursday. Just the two of us, no board members, no calls he couldn't step away from. He'd said it almost sheepishly, like he already knew how rare a promise like that had become in our house.

I told Marta to set the small table in the sitting room instead of the long one built for twelve. I picked out the green dress he'd once said he liked, I lit the candles myself, careful with the match, telling myself not to hope too hard and doing it anyway.

His text came at six-forty, twenty minutes before he was supposed to walk through the door.

*Something came up with the Hendricks deal. Emergency call with London. I'm sorry.*

I read it standing in the doorway of the sitting room, the table already set, the candles already lit, and something in my chest folded in on itself, quiet and small.

I didn't sit down right away. I blew out one of the candles, then the other, because there didn't seem to be any point in letting them burn for no one, then I ate standing at the kitchen counter instead, quick and plain, because sitting at that table alone felt like more of an admission than I had the stomach for tonight.

Afterward, restless in a way I didn't want to examine too closely, I put on my coat and walked the length of the estate grounds instead of going up to bed. The gardens were quiet this time of night, just the sound of my own footsteps on gravel and the distant hum of the city beyond the wall.

I found myself near the old gazebo at the far end of the property, the one Rosa used to bring me to as a girl, back before any of this....before Cassian, before the Blackthorne name, before I'd learned how heavy a house full of people could feel when none of them were actually looking at you.

I sat down on the bench inside it and let the cold air do what it always did, clear something out of my head that needed clearing.

That was where Vivienne found me.

I hadn't heard her approach until she was already standing at the entrance, a shawl wrapped around her shoulders, her expression unreadable in the dark.

"You're out here alone," she said. Not a question.

"I wanted some air."

"Cassian's call ran long, I take it." She stepped inside, uninvited, and sat on the opposite end of the bench, close enough that I couldn't easily leave without it looking like I was fleeing. "He does that. Even as a boy, he'd rather solve a problem than sit still with one that had already solved itself."

I didn't answer. I'd learned, over four years, that silence was usually safer with her than agreement.

"I used to sit out here myself," she said, surprising me, "after Richard died. Before you and Cassian married....this house gets very loud with people and very quiet with company, all at the same time, I don't imagine that's changed."

It was the closest thing to something human she'd ever said to me, and it unsettled me more than her usual cruelty did, because I didn't know what to do with it.

"Vivienne...."

"Kael's been very helpful with the gala, I hear." She cut me off smoothly, the moment of softness gone as quickly as it had appeared. "Priya mentioned it to one of the board wives, who mentioned it to me. Word travels fast in this family, in case you hadn't noticed."

My stomach tightened. "He's the sponsor liaison. It's his job to be involved."

"Of course it is." She looked at me directly then, and even in the dark I could feel the full weight of her attention. "I only mention it because I'd hate for anyone to mistake diligence for something else. People do talk, Aurelia. Especially about a woman sitting alone in a garden at midnight instead of in her husband's bed."

"I couldn't sleep."

"No," she said slowly, rising from the bench, gathering her shawl tighter. "I don't imagine you could."

She left without another word, her footsteps fading back toward the house, and I sat there in the gazebo a long time after she'd gone, my heart going harder than it should have for a conversation that hadn't actually accused me of anything at all.

That was always how she did it....no accusation. Just enough of a shadow cast in the right direction to make you check over your own shoulder for the rest of the night.

*****

I didn't go back inside for almost twenty minutes, needing the cold air to settle whatever she'd stirred up in me. When I finally did, I found an email waiting on my phone, sent an hour earlier, easy to miss among the vendor confirmations.

*Subject: Gala headcount....quick update*

*We're at capacity two weeks early. Wanted you to see this before the vendor call tomorrow. Also.....if you're free Thursday evening, Priya found us a slot with the florist to finalize centerpieces before the price locks in. Let me know if that works, or if there's a better night.*

*Kael*

I read it twice, it was nothing, on the surface. A scheduling note, the kind of email that would have meant nothing at all a few months ago.

Except Thursday evening was tonight. And some part of me, uninvited and unwelcome, wondered if he'd chosen that night on purpose.....knowing, somehow, exactly what kind of evening I might be having.

I didn't reply right away.

Instead I stood there in the hallway, phone in hand, Vivienne's warning still sitting cold in my chest, and realized I had absolutely no idea anymore whether I was more afraid of getting caught, or of how badly, in that moment, I wanted to say yes.

Aurelia's POVCassian came back to us just as Robert Ellison walked away to join another conversation, his laughter still echoing behind him."There you are." Cassian said it to Kael, not to me, his eyes barely touching mine before moving on. "Robert mention the Q3 numbers? He's been cornering half the room about international all night.""He did." Kael's voice stayed even. "Also mentioned he hadn't met Aurelia yet. Took care of that for you."Something flickered across Cassian's face, quick and hard to name. "Should've done that myself.""You usually remember."It wasn't sharp, the way Kael said it....just plain, but plain landed harder than sharp would have, and I watched it land."I've had a lot on my plate this week," Cassian said, jaw tightening slightly."I know. I didn't say otherwise.""Didn't have to." Cassian reached for a glass of wine off a passing tray, took a slow sip, his eyes flicking toward the cluster of investors near the bar before coming back to his brother. "Robe

Aurelia's POVThe final walkthrough went well, and even Vivienne didn't have much to complain about, Diane confirmed that all the vendors were on schedule, and the venue coordinator went over the layout with us twice. By the time we left, I finally felt a little calmer than I had in days, that steadiness didn't survive the evening.Cassian had a reception that night.....a smaller affair than the gala itself, thrown by one of the firm's longtime investors to celebrate some milestone I hadn't fully followed the details of. He had asked me to come with him almost as an afterthought, his invitation felt less like a request and more like an instruction on his schedule.Wear the navy dress. Investors like it when the wives attend.I wore the navy one anyway.....some habits took longer to unlearn than others. The event was held in a private room at one of the city's older hotels, all dark wood and low lighting, the kind of room built to make important men feel even more important than they

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 17: What Shrinking Costs

Aurelia's POVI didn't sleep well after the dinner. I lay awake replaying Vivienne's voice at the table.....*these things happen, some women simply take longer than others*.....and Cassian's silence sitting right beside it, just as loud in its own way.By the time I gave up trying to sleep, it was almost eleven. I sat up against the headboard, phone in hand, and called Rosa without really deciding to, she picked up on the second ring, her voice thick with sleep she hadn't bothered pretending she wasn't in."Aurelia? It's nearly eleven. What's wrong?"And that was all it took, the dam I'd been holding up all evening simply gave out."She did it again," I said, my voice breaking halfway through the sentence. "In front of guests this time.....Bianca's mother, the garden committee women....all of them, sitting there while Vivienne asked the whole table why I still haven't given Cassian a child, like it's a factual question anyone's entitled to an answer to.""Oh, sweetheart.""And Cassian

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 16: Going Home

Aurelia's POVI stayed at Rosa's longer than I meant to, long enough that the soup went cold twice and she reheated it once, refusing to let me leave on an empty stomach even after everything I'd just handed her to carry."You'll tell me if it gets worse," she said at the door, holding both my hands in hers. "Whatever worse looks like. You won't try to carry it alone just to spare me.""I promise.""You say that so easily, I taught you better than that." She squeezed my hands once, hard, then let go. "Go on. Before it gets dark."The drive back to the estate felt longer than usual, the kind of quiet that gave a person too much room to think. I kept turning over the look on her face when I'd said his name.....Cassian's brother.Rosa had repeated, like the words themselves didn't fit together properly in her mouth, she'd known Kael....she'd loved him, in the careful, protective way she loved anyone I brought into her house. And now she knew exactly how impossible the whole thing had bec

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 15: The One Who Knew

Aurelia's POVI went to Rosa's the next afternoon, mostly because I needed somewhere that didn't feel like it was watching me.I sat at her small kitchen table, the same table where I used to do my homework as a child. In front of me was the same chipped blue mug that had always been mine. She poured soup into two bowls and sat across from me then she waited, just as she always did, she never asked questions directly. Instead, she let the silence encourage me to open up on my own."There's my girl," she said, wiping her hands on her apron and pulling me into a hug that smelled like flour and lavender. "You look like you haven't eaten a proper meal in a week.""I've eaten.""Standing up, alone, at a kitchen counter doesn't count as a proper meal, Aurelia." She pulled back and studied my face the way she always did, like she was reading something written just beneath the skin. "Sit. I made soup."I sat at her small kitchen table, the same one I'd done homework at as a girl, the same chi

  • My Husband's Stepbrother Is My First Love    Chapter 14: The Laugh That Gave Us Away

Aurelia's POVI said yes to Thursday. I told myself it was only because the florist's price would lock in otherwise, and that was true enough to let me believe it, even if it wasn't the whole truth. The meeting was at Blackthorne Global, a small room on the thirty-second floor with sample centerpieces spread across the table.....white roses, deep green foliage, tall glass vases that caught the overhead light and scattered it across the walls. Priya had already gone through half the options with the florist by the time I arrived, and Kael was standing near the window, sleeves rolled, looking like a man who had absolutely nowhere else he'd rather be."You made it," he said."I told you I would.""You also told me you'd think about it for two days before deciding. That was one email.""I'm efficient when the price is about to lock in."He almost smiled at that, and something in my chest eased at the sight of it, the tightness Vivienne had left behind in the gazebo finally starting to lo
