Chapter 4

Autor: Leaves Fall
Esther immediately stepped in to defend Lizzie. "It's just an old necklace. What's wrong with her displaying it for a few days? Sirius once saved Blaine's life. Can't you at least show her some kindness?"

I questioned, "But am I the one who owes them anything?"

No one answered.

I looked at Blaine. "Do you think I should give it to her too?"

He was silent for a moment before closing the checklist. "I promised Sirius that I would take care of his only sister."

"So?"

"So nothing can go wrong with this exhibition. Wanda, you've known about this for seven years."

Yes, I had indeed known about that.

During the first year of our marriage, Lizzie came down with a fever in the middle of the night. As a result, he left our anniversary dinner.

On our third anniversary, Lizzie got into a dispute with someone overseas. Blaine canceled the trip he had planned with me to visit Mom's grave and flew to her that very night.

In our fifth year, I suffered a miscarriage and was hospitalized. Lizzie called him and said she'd had a nightmare. He stayed on the phone with her until dawn.

Every time, he said the same thing—that he owed Sirius a debt of gratitude.

I used to think there would eventually be an end to repaying a debt. Only later did I realize that as long as I remained by his side, he could keep taking things from me to repay it for the rest of his life.

Cole called at that moment. I walked to the end of the hallway to answer his call.

He said, "The divorce papers are ready. The cabin in the backyard of Stargazer Mountain Resort is your premarital property. Mr. Zahn has no right to change its use. There's also something else. I found the authorization document you asked me to look into."

"What authorization document?" I asked.

"Last year, Zahn Group planned to incorporate the cabin into the resort's centralized management system. There's a long-term, rent-free use agreement that grants Zahn Group use of the cabin for the next ten years. The acknowledgment form bears your signature."

I said, "I never signed that."

Cole paused for two seconds and said, "The signing date was November 17 of last year."

That was our wedding anniversary. Blaine had told me he wanted to make up for all the grievances I'd endured over the years, so he took me to a countryside resort for an overnight stay.

Before we left, he brought me a stack of the resort's annual operating documents and asked me to sign the last few pages.

I hadn't looked closely. That day, he had fastened the seven-star necklace around my neck himself and told me that no matter what happened, Stargazer Mountain Resort and he would always be my safe haven.

However, it turned out that on the day he seemed to have granted me an ultimate retreat, he was actually giving it to someone else as his so-called repayment.

When I returned to the ballroom, the opening ceremony for the exhibition had already begun. My necklace sat inside a glass display case on a bed of red velvet. Under the lights, the scratch across the center star was painfully obvious.

The host invited Blaine to give a speech.

He took the microphone, and his eyes found me across the crowd. "This exhibition marks Lizzie's new beginning after returning home. It's also a promise I'm fulfilling for someone who is no longer here."

The screen behind him lit up, displaying the redesigned cabin.

Mom's name, which had once been displayed proudly on the exterior, had been completely erased.

In its place were two new words—Sterling Studio.

The guests started applauding.

Blaine stepped off the stage and handed me a document. "After the exhibition, I plan to give Lizzie ten years of use of the cabin. Since you're the owner, I need your signature."

He flipped to the last page for me and even placed a pen in my hand. "Stop making a scene. Sign it, and I'll take you home."

I looked at his hand that was wrapped around mine and slowly pulled the pen free. "Blaine, do you really think I'm just making a scene?"

His expression remained calm. "Then what else is it? You've threatened to leave me so many times. When have you ever actually gone through with it?"

I nodded and refused to sign the agreement.

Instead, I wrote a notice revoking the right to use the cabin in the blank space. Then, I pulled out the divorce papers from my bag and placed them beside his hand. I removed my wedding ring and placed it inside the display case containing the seven-star necklace.

For the first time, Blaine frowned. "Wanda, what are you trying to do now?"

I turned and walked toward the exit.

Behind me, the guests were still waiting for him to say something. Lizzie was tugging at his sleeve.

Blaine didn't follow me. He simply called out to me from across the crowd.

"It's still snowing outside. Once you walk through that door, don't expect me to come after you."

I didn't stop.

This time, someone was already waiting for me outside the resort.

Blaine watched my figure disappear into the snowstorm before turning back to deal with the "mess" I'd left behind in the display case. He was certain that, just like every time during the past seven years, I'd come crawling back and give in after a few days.

But when he casually picked up the wedding ring that should have been on my finger, his expression suddenly changed.

His gaze landed on the seven-star necklace that was underneath it. Not only had the silver chain been fitted with a cheap replacement clasp, but the center star engraved with my birth date had a corner chipped off. A glaring chunk was missing from its edge.

Blaine stared at the damaged star. Then, he whipped around to look toward the doors, his face turning pale.

For an entire year, Blaine sent one letter to Cole every month. He never pressured me to reply, and he never asked me to come home again. Most of the letters were about small things. He wrote that the breakfast containers at home had been thrown away. The entryway light had burned out once. He said he'd gone to Sirius' grave and, for the first time, told him everything that had happened over the years. The final letter contained only one sentence. "I understand now that you weren't throwing a tantrum that night."I set my drink by the window and walked to the front gate.Blaine had lost a lot of weight. Snow had settled on his dark coat. When he saw me, he instinctively clenched his hands before quickly relaxing again. "I came to return the key."He held out the last spare key to my cabin at Stargazer Mountain Resort. "No one can enter your cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.He looked at the wooden sign above the door. "Have you settled in?""Yes," I replied."Do

"No," I said, answering Lizzie's question. Her eyes reddened as she reluctantly said, "He clearly loves you. He just never knew how to treat you right."I looked at her. "When someone is drowning, it doesn't matter whether the people on shore are debating whether they love her or not."Blaine approached from the end of the hallway.Lizzie immediately grabbed his sleeve. "Blaine, Sirius' death anniversary is coming up. You promised you'd go to the snowy mountains with me."He looked down at her hand.Every time she'd mentioned Sirius in the past, he had given in. But this time, he slowly pulled his sleeve free."I'll go pay my respects to him, but I won't go with you," he said."Why?""Because I owe him a debt. I don't owe you everything you want."Lizzie's face went absolutely pale. She tried to say something, but a staff member had already come to escort her in for questioning.Blaine walked over to me and handed me the signed divorce agreement. "The cabin authorization has

Lizzie finally admitted that she had deliberately damaged the necklace. "I just wanted to see what would happen. It was Wanda's necklace. I wanted to know whether you'd actually have the heart to blame me."She sat on the edge of the bed and said in a trembling voice, "In the end, you didn't blame me."Blaine held the broken piece in his palm. Its sharp edge left a thin red mark on his skin."What happened to her messages asking for help?""I deleted them.""Why?""Because I knew you'd go back the moment you saw them."Lizzie suddenly laughed. "Why are you pretending to regret it now? You were the one who made her get out of the car. She froze out there for four hours while you sat by the fireplace fastening that necklace around my neck. Even without me, you never put her first."The color slowly drained from Blaine's face. He didn't argue.Lizzie threw her phone onto the bed. "My brother saved your life. You promised you'd take care of me."Blaine responded, "I've taken care

On the day of our divorce mediation, Blaine arrived 20 minutes late.He saw me in the hallway and immediately quickened his pace. "Why did you change your number?"I said, "My old number was part of our family plan. I canceled it.""You could've transferred it into your own name.""I don't see the need for that."He looked like he was about to say something else, but Cole pushed open the door to the mediation room. The mediator asked us whether we were willing to proceed with the divorce."Yes," I said."No," Blaine said. The moment his answer echoed through the room, I looked at him seriously for the first time."Why?" I asked.Blaine insisted, "We haven't reached the point where we have to get divorced.""You abandoned me in the snow, took Mom's keepsake from me, used my premarital property without permission, and forged an authorization document. Any of those is enough to ask for a divorce, don't you think?""I'll take care of all of it," Blaine said, pushing a document

By the time Blaine followed me all the way to my apartment downtown, it was already dark outside. He stood outside my door, holding a box containing the seven-star necklace.I opened the door only a crack. "If you have something to say, talk to Cole."Blaine said, "I'm returning the necklace."I reached for it, but he didn't let go immediately."Let me come inside. We need to talk.""There's nothing to talk about.""Wanda, I've suspended the art exhibition at the resort. I'll also have the cabin restored to its original condition.""That's what you should do.""The reporters cornered Lizzie today. She had a panic attack and was taken to the hospital. Are you happy now?"I looked up at him. "So did you come here to return my necklace or to scold me on her behalf?"Blaine swallowed. "That's not what I meant.""That's what you always say, every time," I responded quietly. The necklace finally dropped into my palm. The chipped silver star dug into my skin.I asked, "Did you se

The gates of the resort closed behind me.Cole opened the car door for me and said, "All your belongings have been moved out of the Zahn residence. Should we go to your apartment downtown or straight to your aunt's place?""The apartment," I replied."What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."As the car drove down the mountain road, I didn't look back.An hour later, Blaine was finally done with the exhibition's opening reception. When he returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table, his expression barely changed.Lizzie followed him in. "Did Wanda really leave? Should I ask the driver to go after her?""No," Blaine replied, flipping to the last page of the agreement. My signature was already there. His fingertip lingered over the date before he finally closed the document. "Whenever she gets angry, she stays at a hotel for a couple of days. Once she calms down, she'll come back.""But she left her wedding ring," said Lizzie."She took it
