Chapter 3

Author: Leaves Fall
By the time I reached the cabin, the wooden sign Mom had put up had been split down the middle into two.

The foreman recognized me and hurried over to explain. "Mr. Zahn told us to clear out all the old things. We didn't know this belonged to you."

I crouched down and picked it up. A splinter pierced my fingertip, drawing a tiny bead of blood.

When Mom handed the inn over to me, she wrote a sentence on the back of the sign. "Whenever Wanda gets tired, she can come home and sleep for a night."

The rain had faded the ink over the years, but I still recognized every letter.

Lizzie followed me there but stopped at the doorway instead of coming in. "Don't be mad at Blaine, Wanda. I was the one who said I wanted a place to paint winter landscapes. He thought this place was perfect, so he had them fix it up."

I snarled, "Get out."

"I can find somewhere else," Lizzie said, but her eyes swept over the brand-new easels and carpet already installed inside. "Blaine already paid for a year's worth of renovations to help me. If we stop now, all that money will go to waste."

Blaine walked in behind her. He took off the coat he had draped over Lizzie and placed it over my shoulders.

He asked, "What happened to your hand?"

I pulled away from his touch. "Get everyone out."

Blaine responded in exasperation, "Wanda, don't take your anger over the necklace out on the house."

I argued, "This isn't a house. It's the home Mom left me."

Blaine glanced at the broken wooden sign and instructed the foreman, "Make a new one."

The foreman asked, "What about the words behind the sign?"

"Copy them," Blaine said.

"The words aren't by her hand if you carve them," I said disapprovingly.

Blaine's patience finally ran out. "It's just an old piece of wood. If you don't like the renovations, I'll have everything restored after Lizzie's winter art exhibition."

He was asking me to wait again.

I had to wait until the banquet ended to get my necklace back. Now, I had to wait until the exhibition was over to get back the cabin.

In his life, I would always come after everything else was finished.

The resort manager hurried over and informed, "Mr. Zahn, there are reporters outside. They're asking whether the police are investigating you for abandoning your wife."

Lizzie's face went pale. "Someone must have deliberately leaked the story. I just announced I'm going to have an exhibition. I can't have a scandal like this attached to it."

Blaine looked at me. "Did you contact the media?"

I replied curtly, "No."

"You're the only one who knew the details about the road being closed."

"The police know. The doctor knows. Everyone who rescued me knows."

Lizzie lowered her voice. "Blaine, let it go. Wanda's feelings were hurt. It's understandable if she wants to embarrass me a little."

"She's not that kind of person," Blaine said without hesitation.

I clenched my hands slightly.

But in the very next moment, he instructed the manager, "Have her speak to the media as my wife. Tell them it was a private argument between husband and wife and had nothing to do with Lizzie."

He believed I would never hurt anyone, and he was certain I would keep cleaning up his messes.

The reporters were blocking the front entrance.

The Zahn family's elders had arrived as well.

Blaine's mother, Esther Rowling, pulled me aside and scolded me with a frown. "I'll admit that Blaine had gone overboard when he left you there. But you came back safely, didn't you? Lizzie's brother risked his life to save Blaine. Can't you just give in a little?"

I countered, "Why should I give up my necklace and the cabin?"

Esther answered like it was the obvious thing in the world, "You're married into the Zahn family. You have everything. Lizzie is all alone. How can you compare yourself to her?"

I looked at Blaine. He didn't speak up for me. He simply placed a cup of warm water beside my hand.

"Deal with the reporters first. I'll talk to you when we get home."

The cup was warm against my fingers.

Seven years ago, when Mom died, I had stood outside the funeral home shivering from the cold. Blaine had done the same thing then. He had pressed a cup of warm water into my hands and sat beside me until dawn.

For a moment, I almost wanted to trust him again.

Just then, Lizzie suddenly came out of the restroom with a bare neck.

"Where's the necklace?" I asked.

She touched her neck and said, "Blaine just took it. He said he was putting it in one of the resort's display cases."

I was taken aback. "What display case?"

Blaine didn't answer.

The manager happened to walk past carrying an exhibition checklist. At the very top was the title of Lizzie's winter exhibition—"Sterling".

In the exhibit deion, my seven-star necklace was listed as a keepsake left behind by Lizzie's brother, Sirius Sterling. Under the "Provided by" column, Blaine had signed his name.

I placed the exhibition checklist in front of Blaine. "Explain this."

He glanced at it and said, "I'm only lending the necklace as the opening exhibit. Lizzie's brother's name was Sirius, so the theme fits perfectly."

I said coldly, "You know perfectly well whose keepsake that is."

Blaine reasoned, "I didn't change its ownership. You'll get it back after the exhibition."

"The deion says it's Sirius' keepsake."

Blaine looked at the manager.

The manager hurriedly explained, "Ms. Sterling's agent provided the copy. We haven't had a chance to verify it yet."

"Change it now," Blaine said.

But Lizzie walked over with tears in her eyes. "Don't change it. I'm not exhibiting anymore. As long as Wanda is convinced I'm trying to take her things, she'll think anything I do is wrong anyway."

For an entire year, Blaine sent one letter to Cole every month. He never pressured me to reply, and he never asked me to come home again. Most of the letters were about small things. He wrote that the breakfast containers at home had been thrown away. The entryway light had burned out once. He said he'd gone to Sirius' grave and, for the first time, told him everything that had happened over the years. The final letter contained only one sentence. "I understand now that you weren't throwing a tantrum that night."I set my drink by the window and walked to the front gate.Blaine had lost a lot of weight. Snow had settled on his dark coat. When he saw me, he instinctively clenched his hands before quickly relaxing again. "I came to return the key."He held out the last spare key to my cabin at Stargazer Mountain Resort. "No one can enter your cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.He looked at the wooden sign above the door. "Have you settled in?""Yes," I replied."Do

"No," I said, answering Lizzie's question. Her eyes reddened as she reluctantly said, "He clearly loves you. He just never knew how to treat you right."I looked at her. "When someone is drowning, it doesn't matter whether the people on shore are debating whether they love her or not."Blaine approached from the end of the hallway.Lizzie immediately grabbed his sleeve. "Blaine, Sirius' death anniversary is coming up. You promised you'd go to the snowy mountains with me."He looked down at her hand.Every time she'd mentioned Sirius in the past, he had given in. But this time, he slowly pulled his sleeve free."I'll go pay my respects to him, but I won't go with you," he said."Why?""Because I owe him a debt. I don't owe you everything you want."Lizzie's face went absolutely pale. She tried to say something, but a staff member had already come to escort her in for questioning.Blaine walked over to me and handed me the signed divorce agreement. "The cabin authorization has

Lizzie finally admitted that she had deliberately damaged the necklace. "I just wanted to see what would happen. It was Wanda's necklace. I wanted to know whether you'd actually have the heart to blame me."She sat on the edge of the bed and said in a trembling voice, "In the end, you didn't blame me."Blaine held the broken piece in his palm. Its sharp edge left a thin red mark on his skin."What happened to her messages asking for help?""I deleted them.""Why?""Because I knew you'd go back the moment you saw them."Lizzie suddenly laughed. "Why are you pretending to regret it now? You were the one who made her get out of the car. She froze out there for four hours while you sat by the fireplace fastening that necklace around my neck. Even without me, you never put her first."The color slowly drained from Blaine's face. He didn't argue.Lizzie threw her phone onto the bed. "My brother saved your life. You promised you'd take care of me."Blaine responded, "I've taken care

On the day of our divorce mediation, Blaine arrived 20 minutes late.He saw me in the hallway and immediately quickened his pace. "Why did you change your number?"I said, "My old number was part of our family plan. I canceled it.""You could've transferred it into your own name.""I don't see the need for that."He looked like he was about to say something else, but Cole pushed open the door to the mediation room. The mediator asked us whether we were willing to proceed with the divorce."Yes," I said."No," Blaine said. The moment his answer echoed through the room, I looked at him seriously for the first time."Why?" I asked.Blaine insisted, "We haven't reached the point where we have to get divorced.""You abandoned me in the snow, took Mom's keepsake from me, used my premarital property without permission, and forged an authorization document. Any of those is enough to ask for a divorce, don't you think?""I'll take care of all of it," Blaine said, pushing a document

By the time Blaine followed me all the way to my apartment downtown, it was already dark outside. He stood outside my door, holding a box containing the seven-star necklace.I opened the door only a crack. "If you have something to say, talk to Cole."Blaine said, "I'm returning the necklace."I reached for it, but he didn't let go immediately."Let me come inside. We need to talk.""There's nothing to talk about.""Wanda, I've suspended the art exhibition at the resort. I'll also have the cabin restored to its original condition.""That's what you should do.""The reporters cornered Lizzie today. She had a panic attack and was taken to the hospital. Are you happy now?"I looked up at him. "So did you come here to return my necklace or to scold me on her behalf?"Blaine swallowed. "That's not what I meant.""That's what you always say, every time," I responded quietly. The necklace finally dropped into my palm. The chipped silver star dug into my skin.I asked, "Did you se

The gates of the resort closed behind me.Cole opened the car door for me and said, "All your belongings have been moved out of the Zahn residence. Should we go to your apartment downtown or straight to your aunt's place?""The apartment," I replied."What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."As the car drove down the mountain road, I didn't look back.An hour later, Blaine was finally done with the exhibition's opening reception. When he returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table, his expression barely changed.Lizzie followed him in. "Did Wanda really leave? Should I ask the driver to go after her?""No," Blaine replied, flipping to the last page of the agreement. My signature was already there. His fingertip lingered over the date before he finally closed the document. "Whenever she gets angry, she stays at a hotel for a couple of days. Once she calms down, she'll come back.""But she left her wedding ring," said Lizzie."She took it
