Chapter 2

Autor: Bald No Shampoo
By the time the cell door swung shut again, I could no longer form a complete sentence. I could only make a faint, hoarse voice that barely even sounded like mine.

The jailer shoved me down onto the cold prison floor, saying, "Lord Pemberton gave orders not to mistreat you."

Then he tossed a quilt onto the floor, set down a bowl of soup, and turned to leave.

However, my chains remained locked, and I could barely even lift my arms.

So, this was what Arthur meant by "not mistreating" me. He thought he could convince himself he was still the man who treated me with such great kindness, as long as he provided me an old quilt and a bowl of hot food.

Just as I leaned back against the wall, I heard people arguing outside.

"Let me see my young mistress! She isn't Mabel Sinclair! She is the eldest daughter of the Montgomery family!"

It was Bertha Hawthorne, my nanny. She had looked after me since I was a child. She was also the last remaining soul from the old Montgomery household.

Footsteps echoed outside the cell. Moments later, Arthur entered, accompanied by his men.

The guards held Bertha back as she clutched a wooden box to her chest. When she saw the iron chains on my wrists, her legs gave way, and she nearly collapsed to the floor.

"My lady! They said you'd been thrown in here, branded as a prisoner condemned to death, but I didn't believe it! I refused to! I went and dug up the Montgomery family's old registration papers and family tree, along with your marriage certificate! Here they are!"

She opened the wooden box and showed me the documents lying inside.

"If we just show these to the official overseeing the execution, they'll know you're not Mabel Sinclair!"

I braced myself against the wall and stood up. However, Arthur reached out and snatched the wooden box from Bertha before I could even get close.

When Bertha tried to grab it back, the guards pinned her down. She screamed, "My lord! This is a matter of life and death! Please, you can't take it away!"

Arthur unfolded the marriage certificate that bore both our names, stamped with the official seal. If this reached the official in charge, the truth about the prisoner swap would be exposed, and Mabel would have to be returned to death row.

Arthur closed the wooden box. "I shall keep this in my custody for now."

Bertha froze, stunned into silence. "But my lord! The execution is set for dawn! What are you holding onto that for? We have to submit it now!"

She lunged forward, tugging at his sleeve, pleading with him. "Lady Montgomery took 30 lashes in your stead, sold her family home, and saved your entire Pemberton family. And now, you're going to take her life as well?"

Arthur's expression darkened.

"I never said I wouldn't save her. Once the wedding is over, I shall go to the palace myself to explain."

Bertha's eyes streamed with tears. "Will she even still be alive by the time the wedding is over, my lord?"

Suddenly, Mabel's startled cry came from outside. She had followed them, and she now stood upon the steps, clutching her chest and gasping for air.

"Arthur… I only came to apologize to Vicky… But Bertha is right. I should return to prison instead."

Arthur stepped forward immediately to steady her. He chided her and asked, "Why did you come here?"

Mabel's gaze fell upon the wooden box in his hands, and tears began to spill.

"Victoria will be saved if you hand those papers in. Just hand me over, Arthur. Just do it."

As she spoke, she started toward the prison gate, but Arthur caught her in his arms.

"Don't be foolish," he said with a frown. "The Princess Consort hates you to the bone. If you go back, it's literally a death sentence for you!"

Bertha trembled with rage.

"My lord! Are you saying that it's unacceptable for her to face death, but perfectly fine for Lady Montgomery instead?"

Startled, Mabel shrank back into Arthur's embrace.

Guards immediately stepped forward and dragged Bertha away, who was struggling against them. I threw myself against the prison gate, pounding desperately on the iron bars.

In her struggle, Bertha missed her footing on the stone steps, and she fell, striking her temple against the corner of the wall with a sickening thud. Blood instantly gushed down, covering her face, and a raw, wordless cry tore from my throat.

Arthur turned his head around to look.

I pointed toward Bertha, who lay on the ground, then toward the physician standing nearby.

"Save her!" I mouthed at him, furious that I couldn't make a sound. I could only hurl myself against the prison gate, over and over again, until he finally understood what I said.

Just then, Mabel's body went limp. "Arthur… my chest hurts."

He didn't hesitate, scooping Mabel into his arms before turning to the physician. "Examine Mabel first."

Bertha lay on the cold stone ground, clutching my fingers, gasping for air with great difficulty.

"Don't be afraid, my lady. I will go and report this to the authorities for you, even if I have to crawl there on my knees."

No sooner had she spoken than loud drums—signaling the clearing of the area—rang out from the execution grounds.

A prison guard hurried over.

"The Princess Consort has already arrived at the viewing platform. The execution grounds are now sealed off. No unauthorized persons are permitted to approach."

Bertha's grip on my hand tightened abruptly. She looked at me, her lips trembling uncontrollably.

"They've even wiped the guillotine clean… just for you."

  • My Husband's Wedding Day Is My Execution   Chapter 10

A month later, the imperial decree was issued.Mabel was sentenced to beheading, as originally ruled. Before her execution, she wept and begged to see Arthur, but he didn't go to see her.Apparently, she kept protesting her innocence, but she was indeed the one who struck and killed Prince Ezra's heir, suppressed the news, and wore my wedding gown to the wedding ceremony. There was no one left to take the blame for her.Meanwhile, Arthur was punished with 60 strokes of the whip, exiled three thousand miles away, and barred from ever holding official office again. It was drizzling on the day he left the city.Bertha returned from the market and told me the convoy of prisoners would pass by East Street just outside the Montgomery family estate later today. She stood at the kitchen doorway, watching me for a moment."Are you truly not going to take a look, my lady?"I sat by the window, repairing the vanity case Mother left me. The brass lock had rusted, jamming whenever I tried t

After leaving the Ministry of Justice, I returned to the Pemberton family estate. The wedding decorations on the gate hadn't been fully taken down yet, and as the wind stirred, a torn fragment of flower garland—made from bright, jarringly red roses—fluttered in the breeze.Bertha reached up and tore it away."How could they continue to hold a wedding at the cost of a young lady's life? Weren't they the least bit scared of getting nightmares in the dead of the night?"The government officers went through my list of missing items, one by one, helping me to recover them. As it turned out, the missing pearl was in Mabel's vanity case, and the brocade had already been cut into a new dress for her, so they could only offer monetary compensation for its value.I touched the gold bangle Father left me, turning it around my wrist, which now fit. I also placed Mother's pearl tiara back in its wooden box, which I entrusted to Bertha to carry.Arthur's mother, Flora Sterling, stood under th

The Ministry of Justice reopened the case just two weeks later. My throat still ached quite badly. Whenever I spoke too quickly, it would feel as though I had swallowed a mouthful of broken glass.Bertha helped me sit in the courtroom and placed a cup of warm water within reach, while Mabel kneeled on the other side. She had taken off my wedding gown and was now clad in a drab, grey prisoner's uniform instead. The apothecary owner was brought in first. He said, "The mute-inducing potion was purchased by the butler from the Pemberton household, my lord. The dosage was quite potent. I even warned them that consuming it could damage the vocal cords."The butler subsequently confessed that Arthur had ordered him to swap out my identification documents and place Mabel's prisoner identification tag on me. The servant who delivered the message also recounted the events that took place before dawn.Faced with all the testimonies, Mabel continued to weep and say, "I only stopped him from

Arthur took a step forward toward me, but I immediately retreated. In my haste, I knocked over a medicine bowl beside the physician, and shards of porcelain scattered across the floor. He stopped short. "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."Those words were truly laughable coming from his lips.I lowered my gaze to the deep red welts around my wrists. He saw them too. He said, "Victoria, I really thought that I could hold them off. I thought I could stall them. I never intended for you to die.I opened my mouth, but only a fractured, broken sound escaped my throat."The drums…"He froze.I pointed toward the execution grounds and repeated myself. "The drums."I knew he had heard them when he affixed the seal onto the verification documents. He just didn't care or think much about it.Arthur's shoulders slowly slumped."I heard them," he admitted quietly. "But I thought that they wouldn't dare lay a hand on you if I managed to rush there in time."I looked at him. It wasn

Victoria's POVI woke to a searing pain in the back of my neck, as if my head were splitting apart. The chains on my wrists had been removed. Next to me, a matron, who was most likely a prison physician, helped me sit up and brought a spoonful of warm water to my lips."Drink slowly," she said. "The blade didn't touch you. It got caught halfway through. But you were so terrified and already lost so much blood that you just lost consciousness after that."I reached up to touch my neck. There was nothing there but a red welt, left by the shackles of the guillotine board holding me in place.Just as the final execution order was about to be carried out, the old jailer had delivered my blood-written plea to the presiding official.Upon seeing the words "Marriage voided" and recalling that I had once traced the Montgomery name on the ground, the imperial envoy immediately ordered a halt to the execution.Luckily, the blade had been able to be stopped in time, but I lost consciousnes

Arthur stared at his subordinate, forcing his voice through gritted teeth. The subordinate remained kneeling on the ground, not daring to look up as he replied, "I-It's Lady Montgomery… "The imperial envoy ordered me to return with a message, saying that she left a final wish before her execution that her remains must never be interred in the Pemberton family ancestral grave."Arthur seized him by the collar."Impossible," he growled. "I gave explicit orders to stall the execution until I arrived. Who authorized the executioner to strike?"The subordinate gasped, struggling for air."It was an imperial decree, Lord Pemberton! Nobody dared to stall a decree from the King himself! And the official review document bore your own seal."Arthur's hand froze.A terrifying silence descended upon the wedding hall. The flush drained from Mabel's face, bit by bit. She stepped forward to pull at him and said, "Arthur… Perhaps Victoria is merely injured. Why not send someone to verify the
