Victoria's POV

No sooner had the words left my lips than the two pursuing jailers lunged forward, seizing my shoulders from either side.

A length of broken chain, still shackled to my wrist, dragged across the red carpet. It left a trail of blood amidst the scattered wedding confetti on the ground.

My husband, Arthur Pemberton, strode up to me and gripped my wrist firmly. He growled, "What nonsense are you spouting? When did I ever ask you to die in Mabel's place?"

I looked up at him.

The effects of the potion meant to rob me of my voice had not yet fully taken hold, but every word I uttered felt as though a blade were scraping against my throat.

"The execution has been moved up. Can't you hear the drums?" I asked.

The death-knell drums from the execution ground echoed over the courtyard wall, each beat more urgent than the last.

Arthur's brows tightened, but they smoothed out just as quickly afterward. He said, "That's just Prince Ezra trying to force my hand. He wants me to hand Mabel over.

"But I am the Vice Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, and no one would dare touch you without my official warrant."

He wiped a smear of blood from my temple, his tone almost tender as he continued, "It's only for three days, Victoria. Mabel has been afraid of the dark since she was a child. She can't endure the hardships of a prison cell.

"Just stay in her place for a few days. I promise I will bring you back once everything is over."

Seven years ago, when the Pemberton family fell into disgrace, I sold my family estate and kneeled at the palace gates to deliver evidence to the King, ultimately saving Arthur and his entire family.

After the 30 heavy blows of the whip lashed down onto my body, Arthur held my blood-soaked body, weeping and swearing that he would never fail me in this lifetime.

Yet even now, he assumed I could endure anything. He thought that just because I could withstand a flogging and survive a prison cell, I could surely face the executioner's blade on someone else's behalf.

Mabel Sinclair lifted her bridal veil, steadying the ornate pearl tiara upon her head. She approached, her eyes reddening as she said, "Victoria, perhaps… Perhaps I should just go back, Arthur. I was the one who did wrong. It shouldn't be Vicky who bears the consequences on my behalf."

Yet, despite saying that, she kept clutching Arthur's sleeve tightly. Arthur immediately pulled her behind him, shielding her.

"It has nothing to do with you, Mabel. She's just angry and saying these things on purpose to scare you."

I stared at the tiara. "Give it back."

Mabel instinctively shielded her head.

"But Vicky, I've only just come from the death row dungeon. Taking off the tiara now would be incredibly bad luck for me."

The taste of blood rose in my throat.

"So, you do know that the death row dungeon is bad luck."

Her face turned deathly pale.

Arthur's voice dropped just then, growing stern as he chided me.

"It's just a tiara, Vicky. Must you make things difficult for her today? I'll just get you a new one once all of this is over."

While Mother was on her deathbed, her hands had trembled so much that she could barely hold a comb in her hands. Yet, despite her failing health, she had insisted on counting every single pearl on this tiara herself.

She said that I had to wear the most precious jewels on my wedding day so that nobody would ever look down on me. But now, Arthur spoke of it as if it could simply be replaced.

I lowered my head and snapped the cord around my neck. Half of a jade locket fell onto the stone-paved floor and shattered on impact.

The locket had been a symbol of our love. When my half and his half came together, they formed a full, perfect circle, signifying our love for each other. But now, my half was broken.

One shard rolled to the edge of Arthur's boot, and his expression finally shifted.

"Victoria Montgomery!" he yelled.

"It's just broken," I said, looking up at him. "Isn't replacing things one of your biggest talents? You could probably even replace it with a better one soon."

Arthur bent down to pick up the pieces, but I had already turned away, letting the jailers lock my hands back into place.

His voice drifted from behind me.

"I've had a charcoal brazier and bedding brought into your cell. Be good and behave yourself. I'll come to see you as soon as the wedding ceremony is over."

No sooner had the prison cart emerged from the execution grounds' compound than the rapid clatter of hooves echoed down the long street.

Guards from Prince Ezra's palace, Cornelius Palace, blocked the intersection. Just moments later, an imperial carriage pulled up before the gates.

An attendant stepped out, bearing an imperial edict wrapped in purple silk. The Court of Judicial Review's official on duty verified the imperial seal and immediately dropped to his knees.

"This is an imperial decree from Cornelius Palace.

"The condemned prisoner, Mabel Sinclair, shall have her identity verified at the break of dawn and be executed immediately thereafter.

"An envoy from the Inner Court shall oversee the execution. No one is permitted to grant a stay."

The jailer's hands trembled as he opened the register of those condemned to death. Affixed to the page were my identification papers and my family tree, marked with my own thumbprint. Yet, the prisoner's tag upon my wrist bore the name "Mabel Sinclair" instead.

Finally, I understood what was going on.

When Arthur forced that potion down my throat to mute me, it was never merely to prevent me from crying out for help. He had intended for me to reach the execution grounds without ever being able to verify my identity and declare who I truly was.

The imperial attendant cast his gaze toward me.

"Keep her in the death row cell. Her identity shall be verified once more at the break of dawn."

A month later, the imperial decree was issued.Mabel was sentenced to beheading, as originally ruled. Before her execution, she wept and begged to see Arthur, but he didn't go to see her.Apparently, she kept protesting her innocence, but she was indeed the one who struck and killed Prince Ezra's heir, suppressed the news, and wore my wedding gown to the wedding ceremony. There was no one left to take the blame for her.Meanwhile, Arthur was punished with 60 strokes of the whip, exiled three thousand miles away, and barred from ever holding official office again. It was drizzling on the day he left the city.Bertha returned from the market and told me the convoy of prisoners would pass by East Street just outside the Montgomery family estate later today. She stood at the kitchen doorway, watching me for a moment."Are you truly not going to take a look, my lady?"I sat by the window, repairing the vanity case Mother left me. The brass lock had rusted, jamming whenever I tried t

After leaving the Ministry of Justice, I returned to the Pemberton family estate. The wedding decorations on the gate hadn't been fully taken down yet, and as the wind stirred, a torn fragment of flower garland—made from bright, jarringly red roses—fluttered in the breeze.Bertha reached up and tore it away."How could they continue to hold a wedding at the cost of a young lady's life? Weren't they the least bit scared of getting nightmares in the dead of the night?"The government officers went through my list of missing items, one by one, helping me to recover them. As it turned out, the missing pearl was in Mabel's vanity case, and the brocade had already been cut into a new dress for her, so they could only offer monetary compensation for its value.I touched the gold bangle Father left me, turning it around my wrist, which now fit. I also placed Mother's pearl tiara back in its wooden box, which I entrusted to Bertha to carry.Arthur's mother, Flora Sterling, stood under th

The Ministry of Justice reopened the case just two weeks later. My throat still ached quite badly. Whenever I spoke too quickly, it would feel as though I had swallowed a mouthful of broken glass.Bertha helped me sit in the courtroom and placed a cup of warm water within reach, while Mabel kneeled on the other side. She had taken off my wedding gown and was now clad in a drab, grey prisoner's uniform instead. The apothecary owner was brought in first. He said, "The mute-inducing potion was purchased by the butler from the Pemberton household, my lord. The dosage was quite potent. I even warned them that consuming it could damage the vocal cords."The butler subsequently confessed that Arthur had ordered him to swap out my identification documents and place Mabel's prisoner identification tag on me. The servant who delivered the message also recounted the events that took place before dawn.Faced with all the testimonies, Mabel continued to weep and say, "I only stopped him from

Arthur took a step forward toward me, but I immediately retreated. In my haste, I knocked over a medicine bowl beside the physician, and shards of porcelain scattered across the floor. He stopped short. "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."Those words were truly laughable coming from his lips.I lowered my gaze to the deep red welts around my wrists. He saw them too. He said, "Victoria, I really thought that I could hold them off. I thought I could stall them. I never intended for you to die.I opened my mouth, but only a fractured, broken sound escaped my throat."The drums…"He froze.I pointed toward the execution grounds and repeated myself. "The drums."I knew he had heard them when he affixed the seal onto the verification documents. He just didn't care or think much about it.Arthur's shoulders slowly slumped."I heard them," he admitted quietly. "But I thought that they wouldn't dare lay a hand on you if I managed to rush there in time."I looked at him. It wasn

Victoria's POVI woke to a searing pain in the back of my neck, as if my head were splitting apart. The chains on my wrists had been removed. Next to me, a matron, who was most likely a prison physician, helped me sit up and brought a spoonful of warm water to my lips."Drink slowly," she said. "The blade didn't touch you. It got caught halfway through. But you were so terrified and already lost so much blood that you just lost consciousness after that."I reached up to touch my neck. There was nothing there but a red welt, left by the shackles of the guillotine board holding me in place.Just as the final execution order was about to be carried out, the old jailer had delivered my blood-written plea to the presiding official.Upon seeing the words "Marriage voided" and recalling that I had once traced the Montgomery name on the ground, the imperial envoy immediately ordered a halt to the execution.Luckily, the blade had been able to be stopped in time, but I lost consciousnes

Arthur stared at his subordinate, forcing his voice through gritted teeth. The subordinate remained kneeling on the ground, not daring to look up as he replied, "I-It's Lady Montgomery… "The imperial envoy ordered me to return with a message, saying that she left a final wish before her execution that her remains must never be interred in the Pemberton family ancestral grave."Arthur seized him by the collar."Impossible," he growled. "I gave explicit orders to stall the execution until I arrived. Who authorized the executioner to strike?"The subordinate gasped, struggling for air."It was an imperial decree, Lord Pemberton! Nobody dared to stall a decree from the King himself! And the official review document bore your own seal."Arthur's hand froze.A terrifying silence descended upon the wedding hall. The flush drained from Mabel's face, bit by bit. She stepped forward to pull at him and said, "Arthur… Perhaps Victoria is merely injured. Why not send someone to verify the
