Chapter 6

Author: Porridge & Crab
From the moment Lucian returned from the church, his condition spiraled, fast and brutal. He was pulled down into an endless darkness and sleep, as if the whole world had simply stopped. Even drifting between dreams and reality, he kept whispering Vivian's name. Every syllable carried the weight of everything he still felt for her.

Jonas watched it all happen, his heart slowly breaking. Finally, something inside him gave way. With shaking hands, he sent Vivian a desperate message.

[Vivian, Lucian is... He's very sick. He really needs you.]

The wait stretched on forever, until a cold reply finally appeared on the screen, every word like a needle to his chest.

[Oh? Is he getting better or dying? What does that have to do with me?]

Jonas couldn't believe those words had come from her. Furious, he called her directly. Her voice on the other end was just as icy as before.

"What else do you want?"

"Vivian, I never thought you could be this cold-hearted!" Jonas' voice shook with anger, every word forced out between clenched teeth. "He keeps saying your name. If you don't come now, you'll regret it for the rest of your life!"

Vivian's response cut even deeper. "Saying my name? Didn't he run off with Sabrina? What, now he's remembering his ex-wife? That's almost funny."

The line went dead before he could respond, leaving nothing but a dial tone and Jonas' helpless fury.

At that very moment, Vivian stood dressed in an elaborate gown under the dazzling lights of Starlight Hotel, her wedding to Caleb about to reach its climax. She was about to walk down the aisle, ready to start a new life with another man.

Meanwhile, Lucian struggled to open his eyes through the haze. Jonas and Sabrina's anxious faces hovered above him, and a faint light leaked in through the window, telling him time was almost up.

"Jonas, help me... turn on the livestream."

His voice was weak but certain, still holding onto one last, impossible hope. He wanted to witness the happiest moment of the woman he'd once loved so deeply.

He knew Vivian's wedding would be spectacular, nothing like the simple registration they had five years ago. Back then, they'd only gotten married because of family pressure, without so much as a real ceremony.

Now, even as he lay in a hospital bed, he wanted to use the last of his strength to see her through a screen one more time. He wanted to see her in a wedding gown, even if that happiness no longer belonged to him.

At that moment, Vivian was finally stepping into the marriage she'd always wanted. She was walking toward the extravagant, once-in-a-lifetime wedding with the man she'd loved for so long. Every flower, every light, seemed to crown their love story in glory.

But fate loved its cruel jokes.

Right then, Lucian's world had already gone completely dark, and he couldn't witness any of it with his own eyes. His heart was a storm of feelings. He felt relief, regret, and underneath it all, a deeper longing.

How he wished he could see Vivian one last time, to see her smiling in her gown.

The wedding march playing through his phone became the last melody of his life. His lips curved into a soft, unconscious smile, and his vision blurred until it felt like he was traveling back through time, back to an innocent summer long gone.

At the end of that memory, there was light. A girl stood in it, her eyes deeper than any summer night sky, reaching out a hand to help him up after he'd fallen. Time seemed to stop.

"Silly, get up already."

The simple words echoed through him like something sacred, the last sound he carried into the dark. Lucian closed his eyes with a satisfied smile, letting himself sink into that most beautiful memory and falling into an eternal sleep.

At the same moment, the heart monitor beside him let out a long, heavy wail, announcing the end of a life.

Across the city, Vivian felt a sudden, inexplicable tightness in her chest. It was as if something was pulling at her very soul.

The phone in the officiant's pocket buzzed violently, the frantic rhythm matching her own racing heartbeat until she could barely breathe. Her first instinct was to snap at him, until she suddenly remembered that the phone was hers.

In front of every guest, she answered the call without a second thought, every bit of composure and decorum forgotten in that instant.

A calm, solemn voice came through from the other end, asking, "Is this Ms. Lane? I'm Dr. Monroe, calling from Port Haven General Hospital."

"Yes, this is her."

Her voice came out small and trembling, straining to hold back the panic rising inside her.

"Ms. Lane, I'm very sorry. Mr. Ashford signed a body donation agreement with our hospital a month ago, leaving the decision about what happens afterward in your hands."

Edward paused, as if even he felt the weight of what he had to say next.

"Just three minutes ago, Mr. Ashford passed away."

"After looking deeper into it, my father found out the real Caleb died in the same accident that took our mother. It turned out that this man was Caleb's old classmate. He'd stumbled across my brother's diary by chance and decided to use it, slipping slowly into our family under a stolen identity."At least his devotion to my father was genuine. So, even after the truth came out, my father chose to stay silent and let him keep his place as the Ashford family's second son," Nolan explained. As Vivian listened, she felt a tangle of emotions rise inside her. Bitterly, she thought that if only she'd taken the time to really listen back then, maybe she could have avoided all those years of misunderstanding and separation."Why didn't you tell me any of this back then?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.Nolan managed a bitter, self-mocking smile. "Because I loved you. I didn't want you to face a truth that complicated, and I definitely didn't want you to realize you'd given your h

At the hospital, everything was calm and quiet.Nolan lay resting in bed, the swelling on the left side of his face mostly gone now after the ice packs. The gash on his forehead was closed with a few careful stitches, but it still stood out sharply against his skin. With him left shaken by everything that happened, the doctors had given him something to help him sleep. Now he drifted in uneasy dreams, his brow furrowed as if still fighting through some nightmare.Vivian sat beside his bed, watching his tired face with a complicated tenderness in her eyes. Thank goodness she'd made it there in time. Otherwise, the outcome could have been so much worse. She lightly touched her phone screen, then called Lily. Her voice carried an absolute resolve as she asked, "Where's Caleb?""He's been taken into custody. They're questioning him now," Lily replied.Vivian's tone turned ice-cold as she ordered, "Tell them not to go easy on him. Don't worry about sparing me any embarrassment.""Und

Caleb's smile twisted into something monstrous. "Prison? I don't care about any of that anymore! What's the point of living if Vivian's not by my side? But seeing you so pathetic like this feels better than I ever imagined!"He stood up abruptly, a manic grin spreading across his face. "Oh, right, my dear brother. I actually prepared a special gift for you."He clapped his hands, and two large men dragged in a woman, tossing her roughly to the ground. It was Sabrina. Her hands and feet were bound, and her face was flushed in an unnatural shade of red.Panic surged through Nolan. "Sabrina, are you okay?""She's fine. Just enjoyed a little special treatment, that's all." Caleb crouched down and started untying Nolan's restraints. "Lucian, I know Sabrina's always had feelings for you. Today, I'll be your matchmaker and help you two along."Caleb's words made the depth of his cruelty instantly clear to Nolan.Fury exploded inside him. "Caleb, you've completely lost your mind!""Mayb

On the drive back from the cemetery, Nolan's thoughts churned in a hopeless tangle, impossible to settle. He'd wanted to draw a clean line between him and Vivian, and finally find some peace of his own. But her words had landed like a hammer blow straight to his heart, sending ripples through everything he thought he'd resolved.Vivian's name had been carved into his heart since he was practically a boy. Letting go of her would feel like tearing away a piece of himself. It was something incredibly painful and practically impossible. And yet, those old wounds ran too deep to ignore, leaving him questioning whether he even had the courage to break free from the past and start something new with her all over again.Right then, his gaze landed on the elegant velvet box sitting quietly on his desk, and he sank into deep, troubled thought.Just as his mind churned with a thousand conflicting feelings, his phone rang sharply, shattering the quiet. The screen showed a message from Sabrina

Nolan froze, too stunned to move. His thoughts raced. She was proposing to him? He hadn't seen this coming at all.It took him a while to find his voice again, disbelief lacing every word as he asked, "Vivian, are you sure you understand what you're doing right now? Or better yet, are you sure you really know everything about the person sitting in front of you?"Vivian's gaze stayed locked on his face, unwavering. "I know exactly what I'm doing. The person I want to spend the rest of my life with is you."Ever since their trip to Meridian City, that thought had taken root deep inside her. And no matter how many times Nolan insisted on keeping his distance, she couldn't bring herself to let him go.She'd originally planned to take things slow. The daily flowers were just a small gesture, a quiet confession in itself. But the fear of making the same mistake and losing this precious gift again had only grown stronger with each passing day.Nolan looked at her, at the urgency and dete

The confusion on Nolan's face only fueled Chris' need to gossip. He pulled up a chair and settled in comfortably as he recounted, "Mr. Vance, since you've been overseas so long, you probably don't know the local gossip! All these years, every eligible bachelor in Port Haven has tried courting Ms. Lane, and every single one struck out. It's all because she's still carrying around this flawless image of her ex-husband in her heart."Nolan couldn't help a faint smile. "If he was really that perfect, why did he end up as just her ex?"Chris' expression shifted immediately. "That's just how women are sometimes! Don't appreciate what's right in front of them until it's gone, then suddenly realize who their true love really was."He paused mid-sentence, grabbing his phone and scrolling furiously, before looking up with a serious expression. "Mr. Vance, scratch everything I just said! I don't think you should go for it with Ms. Lane after all!""Why the sudden change of heart?" Nolan aske
