Chapter 5

Author: Porridge & Crab
The moment the paramedics rushed Lucian into the emergency room, Jonas felt his heart drop into a bottomless pit. Every second seemed to last forever, and he was terrified the night would swallow his best friend whole.

By the time Jonas found him, Lucian had already been buried under a layer of snow, his body stiff as a statue in winter.

Even in that state, Lucian kept whispering Vivian's name over and over. It was a devotion colder than the snow around him, yet somehow burning hotter still. It was etched into every corner of his life, and impossible to erase.

After a harrowing round of emergency treatment, Lucian was pulled back from death's grip, if only barely. He was hanging on like a candle flickering in the wind.

Jonas spared no expense in bringing in the world's top specialists, who offered one sliver of hope. It was an experimental new drug still in development, which was maybe the key to a miracle.

"Lucian, you have to hold on. For yourself, and for everyone who loves you."

Jonas held him tightly, but all he felt in return was his friend's hollow stare and a body that seemed to have lost its soul. It broke his heart.

In the days that followed, the hospital became Lucian's second home. However, the new drug didn't bring the turnaround they'd hoped for. If anything, it made the pain worse, each attack tearing harder at his already fragile life.

Lucian knew that his time was almost up.

That was when Jonas told him the truth. Caleb's "kidney failure" had been an elaborate lie. It was nothing but ordinary nephritis. Everything had been a performance staged to win Vivian's sympathy, all while he schemed to take Lucian's kidney too.

The news stunned Lucian. For the first time, something flickered across his face. However, it was more confusion and exhaustion than anger.

Lucian shook his head weakly. "Jonas, just let it go..."

He didn't have the strength left to get tangled up in that fight anymore. All he wanted now was a little peace in whatever time he had left. As for Vivian, his feelings about her were a tangled mess. He didn't know what she'd think if she ever found out the truth.

One day, Sabrina came to his hospital room, bringing warmth and sunlight with her. She suggested they go out for a walk.

Something stirred in Lucian, and he asked to visit the city's church. There, it felt like he'd stepped back through time, back to a younger, more innocent version of himself. He was finally coming back to fulfill the vow written on the prayer request he'd hung there once.

Standing beneath the wishing tree, Lucian closed his eyes and pressed his palms together, silently making a wish.

'If there is a next life, let me forget everything from this one. Just let me live in peace and free of worry.'

Just as he sank into his own thoughts, a familiar yet strange voice broke the quiet.

"Lucian."

He didn't even need to turn around to know it was Caleb.

Lucian's heart stayed steady. He was about to walk away when a gentle voice that made something in his chest tighten rang out.

"Is your arm alright now?"

It was Vivian. Her soft voice brushed against the softest part of Lucian without even trying. His whole body tensed, and he nearly lost his footing. He caught himself just in time, resting a hand against the cold stone wall, searching for something to hold onto.

Vivian's eyes settled on him. Wrapped in a black wool coat, his face looked thinner behind his sunglasses. He looked pale, almost to the point of transparency, like the last patch of snow clinging to winter. It broke her heart to look at him.

"Are you... not feeling well?" she asked, the concern in her voice unmistakable.

Lucian shook his head. "I'm fine. And about what I promised you, don't worry. Everything's moving forward. You'll have your wish soon."

His voice was calm, but carried a thread of tenderness he couldn't quite hide. There was something deeper hiding behind his words.

As his eyes slid toward Caleb, the corner of his mouth lifted into a knowing smile. "As for my kidney, I hope it makes a fitting gift for you, dear brother."

Caleb's eyes flickered with unease, his grip on Vivian's arm tightening without him realizing it. What did Lucian mean by that? Had he figured something out?

To cover his nerves, Caleb quickly slipped back into his usual sweet tone, saying, "Lucian, Vivian and I came to the church today to pray for our marriage. The wedding's set for next week. You're my only family. You have to come."

Wedding.

The word cut through Lucian's chest like an invisible blade. He'd known it was coming, but hearing it out loud still hurt more than he expected. His hands clenched into fists, his knuckles white with the effort of silently holding every emotion inside.

That was when a warm hand settled over his. Sabrina had appeared beside him without him noticing.

She offered him a hot drink. "Here, have some tea. It'll help."

Her eyes were full of concern for him, and nothing but cold indifference for Vivian and Caleb.

She gently looped her arm through his. "It's getting windy. Let's head back."

Every move she made was careful and protective. Lucian understood exactly what she was doing and gave her a grateful smile. He leaned into her like she was a shelter from the storm.

As they passed Vivian, he spoke softly, his voice carrying a finality that was hard to miss.

"No matter what happens, take care of yourself… Vivian, I hope you're happy... Goodbye."

Vivian watched his figure grow smaller in the distance, an inexplicable ache rising in her chest, like something was pressing against it. Without thinking, she reached out a hand, as if to hold onto something, but she was already too late.

She had no idea that this goodbye would be the last one.

"After looking deeper into it, my father found out the real Caleb died in the same accident that took our mother. It turned out that this man was Caleb's old classmate. He'd stumbled across my brother's diary by chance and decided to use it, slipping slowly into our family under a stolen identity."At least his devotion to my father was genuine. So, even after the truth came out, my father chose to stay silent and let him keep his place as the Ashford family's second son," Nolan explained. As Vivian listened, she felt a tangle of emotions rise inside her. Bitterly, she thought that if only she'd taken the time to really listen back then, maybe she could have avoided all those years of misunderstanding and separation."Why didn't you tell me any of this back then?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.Nolan managed a bitter, self-mocking smile. "Because I loved you. I didn't want you to face a truth that complicated, and I definitely didn't want you to realize you'd given your h

At the hospital, everything was calm and quiet.Nolan lay resting in bed, the swelling on the left side of his face mostly gone now after the ice packs. The gash on his forehead was closed with a few careful stitches, but it still stood out sharply against his skin. With him left shaken by everything that happened, the doctors had given him something to help him sleep. Now he drifted in uneasy dreams, his brow furrowed as if still fighting through some nightmare.Vivian sat beside his bed, watching his tired face with a complicated tenderness in her eyes. Thank goodness she'd made it there in time. Otherwise, the outcome could have been so much worse. She lightly touched her phone screen, then called Lily. Her voice carried an absolute resolve as she asked, "Where's Caleb?""He's been taken into custody. They're questioning him now," Lily replied.Vivian's tone turned ice-cold as she ordered, "Tell them not to go easy on him. Don't worry about sparing me any embarrassment.""Und

Caleb's smile twisted into something monstrous. "Prison? I don't care about any of that anymore! What's the point of living if Vivian's not by my side? But seeing you so pathetic like this feels better than I ever imagined!"He stood up abruptly, a manic grin spreading across his face. "Oh, right, my dear brother. I actually prepared a special gift for you."He clapped his hands, and two large men dragged in a woman, tossing her roughly to the ground. It was Sabrina. Her hands and feet were bound, and her face was flushed in an unnatural shade of red.Panic surged through Nolan. "Sabrina, are you okay?""She's fine. Just enjoyed a little special treatment, that's all." Caleb crouched down and started untying Nolan's restraints. "Lucian, I know Sabrina's always had feelings for you. Today, I'll be your matchmaker and help you two along."Caleb's words made the depth of his cruelty instantly clear to Nolan.Fury exploded inside him. "Caleb, you've completely lost your mind!""Mayb

On the drive back from the cemetery, Nolan's thoughts churned in a hopeless tangle, impossible to settle. He'd wanted to draw a clean line between him and Vivian, and finally find some peace of his own. But her words had landed like a hammer blow straight to his heart, sending ripples through everything he thought he'd resolved.Vivian's name had been carved into his heart since he was practically a boy. Letting go of her would feel like tearing away a piece of himself. It was something incredibly painful and practically impossible. And yet, those old wounds ran too deep to ignore, leaving him questioning whether he even had the courage to break free from the past and start something new with her all over again.Right then, his gaze landed on the elegant velvet box sitting quietly on his desk, and he sank into deep, troubled thought.Just as his mind churned with a thousand conflicting feelings, his phone rang sharply, shattering the quiet. The screen showed a message from Sabrina

Nolan froze, too stunned to move. His thoughts raced. She was proposing to him? He hadn't seen this coming at all.It took him a while to find his voice again, disbelief lacing every word as he asked, "Vivian, are you sure you understand what you're doing right now? Or better yet, are you sure you really know everything about the person sitting in front of you?"Vivian's gaze stayed locked on his face, unwavering. "I know exactly what I'm doing. The person I want to spend the rest of my life with is you."Ever since their trip to Meridian City, that thought had taken root deep inside her. And no matter how many times Nolan insisted on keeping his distance, she couldn't bring herself to let him go.She'd originally planned to take things slow. The daily flowers were just a small gesture, a quiet confession in itself. But the fear of making the same mistake and losing this precious gift again had only grown stronger with each passing day.Nolan looked at her, at the urgency and dete

The confusion on Nolan's face only fueled Chris' need to gossip. He pulled up a chair and settled in comfortably as he recounted, "Mr. Vance, since you've been overseas so long, you probably don't know the local gossip! All these years, every eligible bachelor in Port Haven has tried courting Ms. Lane, and every single one struck out. It's all because she's still carrying around this flawless image of her ex-husband in her heart."Nolan couldn't help a faint smile. "If he was really that perfect, why did he end up as just her ex?"Chris' expression shifted immediately. "That's just how women are sometimes! Don't appreciate what's right in front of them until it's gone, then suddenly realize who their true love really was."He paused mid-sentence, grabbing his phone and scrolling furiously, before looking up with a serious expression. "Mr. Vance, scratch everything I just said! I don't think you should go for it with Ms. Lane after all!""Why the sudden change of heart?" Nolan aske
