Chapter 3

Author: Madness Incarnate
Last month, the company had recruited several interns, but once the project ended, only two of them would be kept on.

I slipped my resignation letter in together with the interns’ termination notices.

The HR manager simply assumed I was helping deliver paperwork for the interns. Without even glancing through the documents, he signed them immediately.

After signing, he even praised me a little.

"You and Mr. Snow are Ms. Lockhart's greatest helpers!"

I smiled, not saying much more.

-

The moment I arrived at my office, I received a message from Serena.

It was a screenshot of two movie tickets.

I knew this was Serena trying to make peace with me.

After all, she understood perfectly well that the company’s future project collaborations still depended on the chip technology I had developed.

"We haven't watched a movie in ages. Let's go see one tonight."

I thought about it for a bit, before replying, "There isn’t much going on in the project department tonight, so I can head over after work. I’ll wait for you near the cinema."

This was as good a chance as any to talk with her about our divorce, after all.

After work, I saw Hugo getting into Serena’s car yet again.

A few minutes later, I received another message from Serena.

"I've got business to deal with, so wait for me at the cinema."

I didn't wait.

I immediately headed to a lawyer firm, discussing with a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement.

By the time I returned to the cinema area, the movie had already been playing for half its runtime.

I had never liked the romance films Serena chose. Every time, I only forced myself to sit through them to accommodate her.

So I simply bought a ticket for another showing. After the movie ended, I grabbed dinner before heading home.

While I scrolled through my feed, I saw a picture posted by Hugo.

The background showed a posh restaurant, complete with steak, red wine, and two people clasping hands tightly together.

Even though the photo only showed their hands, I immediately recognized that they belonged to him and Serena.

The caption said: Only people who love each other in a relationship will be blessed by others. Thank you for the gift, baby.

Not long after I got home, Serena returned as well.

"I specially bought you a tie. See if you like it."

Every time Serena broke a promise, she would casually buy me some gift to brush me off.

And every time I received one, not only would I stop being angry, I would even act delighted and treat each present like treasures for ages.

As such, this was a trick that Serena never got tired of using.

"Put it in the wardrobe."

Taken aback by my different attitude, Serena seemed annoyed.

"I know standing you up tonight was my fault, but I bought a gift for you especially, so what’s with this attitude?"

"This was probably some tag-on gift for your purchase, wasn't it?"

Serena's face reddened, glaring at me in embarrassment.

"What's that supposed to mean?!"

In the past, no matter what Serena gave me, I never cared about the value of the gift, because I believed that anything she gave me was proof that she cared.

Just then, the lawyer sent me the divorce agreement. Without even raising my head, I replied flatly, "Nothing."

Serena seemed convinced that as long as she got angry, I would soothe her, but even when she looked at me coldly, I didn't so much as flinch.

I read through every line of the divorce agreement, I replied to the lawyer with my confirmation before locking the phone.

"Serena, the tag on that tie literally says 'Not for sale'. Do I really need to say more?

"I don't want a leftover gift that someone else threw away."

"Who do you think you are? You spend all day lifelessly buried in R&D, so what good would come of you wearing anything good?

"This tie is a gift I gave you, so how could you pick and choose? Take it or leave it!"

No matter what Serena continued shouting behind me, I simply got up and headed straight for the study.

I deliberately acted like I didn't see her and wanted to avoid her, but she stood in my way directly."I've been waiting for you, Elio.""What do you want?"I raised my eyebrow."I've ended things with Hugo. We won't have any contact anymore, and I fired him too."As I reached for my car door, I replied casually, "What happens between you and Hugo has nothing to do with me."I brushed aside the hand Serena had placed in front of me.Suddenly, Hugo came rushing out from nowhere and grabbed Serena, trying to pull her away."Serena, you said you loved me the most in bed! You can't treat me like this! Won't you marry me?"Serena shoved him away as hard as she could."I already told you I won't meet you anymore! You're the reason why Elio divorced me! I don't love you, and I won't get married to you!"I had no interest in this ridiculous drama and simply drove away.Through the rearview mirror, I could still see Serena and Hugo struggling with each other in the parking lot.Aft

The video showed Hugo publicly accusing me by name, claiming that I had stolen confidential project files from my former company before jumping to a competitor. He also accused me of having no professional ethics, calling me shameless and despicable for doing something so underhanded. The new chip technology had already attracted massive attention. As the lead developer, I quickly became the center of discussion. Before long, the video went viral.I skimmed through the comments for a while, reading through all sorts of opinions. In the end, I found it all completely tasteless and closed the app. Then, I immediately called the police without any hesitation. My new company also issued a public statement, saying that the relevant authorities were welcome to investigate and that no theft had occurred.I spent the entire night organizing evidence, and Serena's company also released an official statement. They stated that I resigned through regular procedures and that none of Hugo's a

"No need," I rejected her again. "That place isn't my home anymore."The next day, I was working overtime on the project. At noon, Serena brought me an exquisitely packed lunchbox."It's all the dishes that you like. Eat it while it's hot," she urged.I took a look. It was a meal from the famous restaurant downstairs. During lunchtime, you would even need to make a reservation in advance to eat there.Serena used to love bringing Hugo there for meals.Without taking my eyes off the computer screen, I replied flatly, "The next time you go with Hugo, you don't need to bring food for me."A trace of awkwardness flashed across Serena's face before she hurriedly explained, "I went out to buy this for you during lunch. When I didn't see you at the cafeteria, I asked around in the project department and found out you were still busy working."Only then did I finally look directly at Serena."Well, then there's even less reason for you to go through the trouble. We have nothing to do

I rejected her without even thinking about it."I already resigned, Serena. Find someone else.""Elio, you've always been the one responsible for this chip, and you're the only one who can fix it!"The urgency in Serena's voice didn't sound fake. After thinking about it for a moment, I eventually agreed to go back and take a look. When I returned to the company, several colleagues assumed I was coming back for good. After learning that I was only there temporarily to help, many of them openly spoke up for me.They couldn't understand how Serena could throw away a four-year marriage just for an assistant who had only been around for three months.I headed straight to the R&D department. The moment Serena saw me, she finally breathed a sigh of relief."Can you fix it? We've already signed contracts with our investors."I carefully checked the chip's program."Yeah, I can.""That's great! I knew I could count on you to fix this, Elio!" Serena seemed ecstatic. My face was exp

The very next day, I moved into the studio apartment I had bought before marriage. It was the only refuge I had ever had from my family growing up.Back then, I thought Serena would finally give me a sense of belonging.Instead, she shattered all my hopes for what a home should be.I wasn't in a hurry to join the new company yet, since my divorce still hadn't been settled.I hadn't even finished unpacking when I heard knocking at the door.At first, I thought it was property management coming to reconnect the utilities. However, when I opened the door, I saw Serena standing there with my mother."Elio, why didn't you answer after I called you so many times? How could you ignore calls from your own mother?"I took one look at Serena. This woman brought my mother here on purpose."Come in."I stepped aside, and Serena helped my mother into the apartment.Serena looked around the small space before turning to me with a dark expression. "See, you can only live in a small apart

I placed the divorce agreement I had prepared long ago onto her desk.Originally, I had planned to talk things through with Serena at home tonight, but now it seemed completely unnecessary."You want a divorce?"Serena looked as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing, that I would be the one bringing up a divorce."If you're unhappy with the division of assets, you can change those terms. The house is yours, and I'll give you 5% of the company's shares I own. All I want is five million."Serena knew that five million wasn't nearly enough for the value that I'd created for the company throughout the years, not even a fraction. But now, all I wanted was a speedy divorce."What gives you the right to ask for a divorce?! All I did was a small mistake!"I didn't know what gave her the call to write off infidelity as a small mistake."If you don't sign the divorce agreement, I'll take legal action.Hugo held Serena's hand, pointing at me and shouting, "She doesn't love you!
