Chapter 2

Author: Stars
It was Vivian's father.

He had two or three guards behind him, but they were clearly no match for the rogues.

They were beaten to the ground within moments.

Seeing that force wouldn't work, her father, Harold Blake, tried to reason with them.

"I apologize for what my daughter has done. But Jared Cole is innocent. Please don't hurt him. He's just come back from the campaign, and he's in no shape to fight."

The lead rogue savagely licked the blood from his claws.

"Bring Vivian here, and I'll let him go."

Helpless, Harold sent Vivian a mind-link.

But the moment it connected, Vivian's impatient voice came through.

A man's aggrieved sobs sounded in the background.

"Dad, don't mind-link me for nothing. I'm busy."

"Vivian, Jared's been attacked by rogues. They're demanding to see you. If they don't, they're going to push him off a cliff—"

But before Harold could finish, Vivian cut him off with a sneer.

"Dad, why are you playing along with his little show? The Wastelands are under heavy watch. There's no way any rogues escaped. And even if they did, he's an Alpha. Are you telling me he can't beat them?"

"If he really dies at the hands of a band of rogues, then he has no business being Alpha. He should step down now."

Watching the rogues edge closer, Harold grew frantic.

"Vivian, it's all true. Why won't you believe your own father?"

"I know what you're going to say." Vivian's voice dripped with scorn and mockery.

"You want to say Jared is the Alpha, that he's rich and powerful, so I should drop everyone else and go soothe him first."

"But do you know what? Without me, Gavin will die. His life matters too."

Gavin's sobs carried through the mind-link.

"It's okay, Vivian. Jared is the Alpha. His status is so far above mine. I'm just a lowly pack member. What right do I have to compete with an Alpha?"

"Go be with him. I really don't mind. It's just... it hurts so much. They say this wolfsbane rots me from the inside out, organ by organ. The most painful death there is..."

Before Gavin could finish, Vivian cut him off. "Don't say things like that. No one matters more than you."

Their syrupy voices exploded in Harold's head like fireworks.

He felt his temples throbbing.

"If you don't believe me, I'll send you photos."

Harold took photos of the whole bloody scene and sent them to Vivian, including one of me sprawled at the cliff's edge in a spreading pool of blood.

I thought Vivian would believe us this time, but she only gave a disdainful snort.

"Jared Cole, I never realized what an actor you are. You hired this many extras just to make me come running? You even talked my own dad into playing along."

"Let's see how long you can keep this show going."

With that, she cut the mind-link without mercy.

Harold's forehead was beaded with sweat. He wanted to mind-link Vivian one more time, but I stopped him.

I knew from my past life that even if Vivian abandoned Gavin for me, she would resent me for it.

I would only die an even more gruesome death.

"Let it go, Harold. Vivian isn't coming. It doesn't matter how many times you beg."

Either way I was going to die, so I struggled to my feet, ready to fight the rogues to the end.

Their claws were slick with wolfsbane, and the poison had already seeped into my blood. My vision blurred.

Alone, I was no match for them. After a few exchanges, there wasn't an inch of unbroken skin left on my body.

At the last second, just as I started to fall, my Beta, Marcus Hale, arrived with the guards.

It took everything they had to capture all the rogues.

But I had lost too much blood, and my consciousness slipped away.

In the haze, I remembered so many things from my past life.

One was a conversation between Vivian and Gavin that I had overheard in a private room at a bar.

"Don't worry, Gavin. You're the one I really love. I only went through the mating ceremony with Jared for the power and status that come with an Alpha."

"I'm already captain of the guard. In a few years, once I've taken enough power for myself, I'll find a chance to kill Jared. Then his fortune will be ours, and we can live happily together forever."

Every word out of Vivian's mouth was a blade driven into my heart.

In my past life, I had only grieved that she no longer loved me. This time, I hated her to my core.

I arrived at the Werewolf Authority.Vivian sat at a table, wrists and ankles shackled, unable to move.In front of her lay a mate bond severance agreement. She was staring at the document, her eyes hollow. At the sound of my footsteps, she whipped her head around. When she saw it was me, fierce anger flared in her eyes."What did you do to Gavin, Jared?"She couldn't even save herself, and still all she cared about was her Gavin.I sat down across from her and looked at her evenly. "I banished him."Vivian shot to her feet. "How could you do that to him? He has depression! Banishment will kill him!"Looking at this hopelessly deluded woman, all I felt was pity and contempt.I tossed the entire file on Gavin onto the table in front of her."Take a look. This is the Gavin you've been pining for."Vivian leafed through the documents, her expression growing more panicked with every page."No. This is impossible... impossible..." she mumbled."Gavin and I love each other. He would never li

"Well, Jared. Looks like you've made quite the recovery." His voice was laced with contempt. Then he ground out through clenched teeth, "Those rogues were useless. How are you still alive?"I chuckled and met his contempt with my own. "So sorry to disappoint. I carry a pure Alpha bloodline. I'm the real thing. Unlike some people, doomed to stay a bastard son hiding in the shadows forever!""You—"Veins bulged on Gavin's forehead. If we hadn't been in a hospital ward with my guards posted around us, he would have lunged for my throat already. His birth had always been his deepest shame. He had swallowed years of humiliation working as a spy precisely to win his father's approval, to finally stand in the open as his father's son.And I had destroyed all of it."You've already ruined me! What more do you want?" He was straining to hold down his fury, his voice shaking."You think this is over?"I folded my arms across my chest and looked at him calmly."Have you forgotten? When you infilt

I didn't want to dwell on those painful memories anymore. My heart for Vivian was dead. If she wanted to be with Gavin, I would step aside and let her.A few days later, word came from the Werewolf Authority.Vivian had indeed abused her authority to raid the village and had banished many innocent werewolves.Taken together, her crimes were enough to earn her lifelong banishment.Through the Authority's investigation, I learned the truth. It was Gavin who had egged Vivian on, claiming the village kept a treasure that could cure his depression.Vivian believed him and led the guards to the village to obtain it.But the treasure had been passed down through the villagers for generations, and they refused to hand it over. When persuasion failed, Vivian let the guards loose on the village. They burned it, killed, and took whatever they wanted. To keep the villagers from reporting her to the Werewolf Authority, she struck first, pinning fabricated crimes on them and banishing them all.The

Vivian was captain of the pack guard before we ever got together.During my first campaign, she was the one at my side. We bled side by side and fought our way out when the enemy had us surrounded. We had been through life and death together.Over time, I fell for her fierce courage.Luckily for me, she accepted my proposal, and we held our mating ceremony soon after.Yet after we became mates, married life turned out nothing like I had imagined. That first year, she was cold to me.For a while she even insisted on separate beds. When we did share one, she kept a blanket between us.A buddy of mine joked that maybe Vivian's heart belonged to someone else. Why else would she be so unmoved by her handsome mate?I didn't read much into it. I told myself she was just reserved and didn't know how to show affection.Or maybe I simply hadn't given her enough love.So after we married, I went out of my way to make our life romantic. On every anniversary, I prepared a special gift for her.Once

Vivian stared at the mangled flesh in front of her, struggling to believe what she was seeing."Where did all these wounds come from?"I lay weakly on the bed, every breath a fresh stab of pain."Do you finally believe me now? I wasn't lying."I barely got the words out before blood loss dragged me under for the second time. When I woke again, my wounds had been freshly dressed.Seeing me awake, Vivian glanced at me, her expression calm.I searched her eyes and found not a trace of guilt, not a sliver of worry."I didn't think an Alpha could actually get carved up this badly by rogues."Her tone was flat, even faintly disdainful."I thought it over. This one is on me. I was lax with the Wastelands, and that's how the rogues got out.""So to make it up to you, everything you did to Gavin, I'm willing to let go.""But you still owe him an apology. Once you're discharged, I'll take you to his place, and you'll apologize to him properly."I gave a bitter laugh. "I'm supposed to apologize t

The memory of how she killed me in my past life made me shake with rage. But I forced the fury down and said, "I'm not lying to you. If you don't believe me, then leave. Don't disturb my recovery."There was a time when she would never have dared speak to me like this. After we became mates, she used one excuse after another to pry pack privileges out of my hands. Her power grew and grew, and her true nature crept into the open.By now she didn't even bother pretending. If I hadn't been so badly hurt, I would have leaped up and bitten her to death.Vivian looked at me with utter disgust."Don't think being Alpha means you can twist the truth however you please.""Gavin has depression. If the abuse online pushes him over the edge, I will never forgive you."I stared at her, baffled. "What truth am I twisting?"Vivian sneered."Keep acting. Go on. Jared Cole, your performance is truly a work of art."When I still refused to admit anything, she shoved her phone in my face. The top trendin
