Evelyn's POV

I hung up and stared at the empty living room.

'My supplies!'

My consciousness sank into my mind, and the outline of the apartment became clear.

With a mental command, I picked up a piece of charcoal in my hand.

I closed my eyes and scanned the storage space with my awareness. The living room was piled high with supplies, the kitchen stuffed to the brim, and the black soil garden on the balcony was quiet.

Everything was there.

Relief washed over me as I noticed the floating light timer in the center of the living room: [00:00:00].

So that was how it worked.

The storage space can only last for two hours; after that, it forces you out and cools down.

I had come out of the shower past midnight.

When I checked the storage space again, the timer had restarted: [01:59:59].

Only then did I relax.

Lying in bed, however, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

After what felt like a long time, I dozed off.

In my dream, blood everywhere. A rusted cleaver raised high, then fell heavily.

I ran desperately, my legs feeling like lead, with Hans' cold eyes watching behind me, and Giselle's moonstone pendant swaying on Tamara's neck.

"Ah!"

I woke up with a start, drenched in sweat, my back soaked.

My wolf was softly whimpering in my mind.

It was five o'clock in the morning, but it was still dark outside.

I took a few deep breaths, looking at the pile of supplies in the storage space, and my heart slowly calmed down.

Not wanting to go back to sleep, I grabbed my car keys and headed out.

The sky was just beginning to lighten as I arrived at the farmers market. The parking lot was already bustling.

Fresh produce: one hundred pounds each of pumpkins, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions.

By nine o'clock after breakfast, I started stockpiling the main food staples. Rice, flour, pasta, and various oils cost less than ten thousand dollars.

But that would last me thirty years.

During the break, I wandered into the seasonings section, buying three thousand pounds of salt.

Without enough salt in the apocalypse, you wouldn't make it for three days.

In my previous life, I had seen someone trade a bag of salt for thirty pounds of grain.

Three thousand pounds don't take up much space, and in the later stages of a disaster, they become hard currency.

I found an unmonitored corner to collect everything in my storage space.

At the frozen goods section, I bought all sorts of breads and snacks, spending over ten thousand dollars.

When I got to the meat section, I found the vendor I used to know.

Marco Ruiz, the owner of Ruiz Kitchen, greeted me with a smile. "Hey, Evelyn. What can I get you?"

With a Category 5 hurricane approaching, it was unbearably hot. There wasn't much meat left on his stall, and even less fresh at this hour, but the prices were fair.

I asked for a lot of different meats, including over a dozen turkeys.

His eyes widened. "You're serious?"

His wife worked at a meat processing plant, and I had introduced several clients to her, earning commissions.

"I'm throwing a barbecue. Cheap cuts are fine."

"For you? I'll take thirty percent off the whole order."

That came out to around three thousand dollars.

I didn't haggle, but I did ask for two cleavers and a butcher knife.

After buying fish and eggs, I went to GreenSprout Seeds.

All sorts of vegetables with short growth cycles: lettuce, spinach, kale, and more—dozens in total.

With only one hundred square feet of black soil, but two balconies to use, my gardening instincts were awakened. I bought pots, shovels, spades, and potting soil.

Meat was a consumable, and as disaster dragged on, even rich people wouldn't have fresh meat.

I bought a pair of breeding rabbits.

They could be fed with greens and bred quickly enough to meet the demand for meat.

I spent the whole day at the market, spending money like it was water.

It hurt, but seeing how my storage space filled up made me feel a mix of satisfaction and confidence.

When I left, the streets were brightly lit and bustling.

The best part of my life had just begun.

I went to a restaurant and enjoyed a nice meal before heading home to organize my storage space.

I kept an eye on the timer, making sure to exit the storage space in ten minutes.

Just as I got my footing, two rabbits were kicked out and landed with a thud, nearly dead.

Turns out the space wasn't just limited by time; any living beings couldn't stay in it if I wasn't there. This meant no one could take away my storage space.

My mood lifted immediately. I sat down to make sure everything was covered. I bought everything on my list until my account balance hit around $20,000.

Now, my space only had the living room and bathroom.

At that moment, the workers for the doors and windows arrived.

"You already have a security door," one of the installers said.

"I want a stronger one. We've had break-ins nearby."

He looked confused. "This lock is serious. We'll have to drill into the ceiling and floor. You sure?"

"Do it. I care more about being safe."

In less than two hours, the doors and windows were all installed. After settling the final payment, I felt relieved as I surveyed my now fortress-like apartment.

I took off my jacket and put everything I’d bought today into my storage space, one by one.

The timer had only a few minutes left. I exited the storage space early.

After I showered, I sat on the edge of the bed and scrolled through my phone.

School cancellation notices, supermarket panic-buying videos…

I scrolled past them one by one. The world was still running as usual. No one really realized what was coming next.

I was about to turn off the screen when a tweet from yesterday loaded at the top.

It was Tamara.

The photo was a selfie of her and Hans, sitting in the living room of my old house. The caption read: “New home, new life. Thanks, darling.”

I stared at the photo, my nails almost digging into my palms.

That was my house.

My life.

I turned off the screen and lay in the dark with my eyes open.

Tomorrow was Hans’s birthday.

I had a feeling he would come looking for me.

And I was ready.

Evelyn's POVAfter working until past midnight, I took the trash out.As I passed by apartment 1801, my eyes froze on the hallway floor. Fresh, damp footprints led straight into the closed door of apartment 1801.Searching for supplies in daylight was dangerous enough. Who would dare go out at this hour?My wolf shifted inside me, a low, dangerous thrill rippling through her. This new neighbor was not someone to underestimate. The rain was cool and soothing as I drifted off to sleep. When I woke up, it was already past ten in the morning. The sky was gray and heavy with storm clouds, and water poured down like a curtain. Downstairs, there was a commotion and curses. Looking down, I saw that the murky floodwaters had risen to engulf the entire building. The first-floor residents were met with a deluge of water in their living rooms as they opened their eyes. The group chat was eerily quiet, filled only with a few blurry photos showing ankle-deep water. 911 calls were useless; the rescu

Evelyn's POVI blocked the doorway. "Get outta here.""I don't owe any of you food." I let my Alpha aura roll over them. They backed up at once. "Kick my door again, and I'll take your heads off."After three years in an apocalypse, I had seen the worst of human nature and no longer believed in moralizing. They tried to stand their ground, but their voices shook. "W-we said we'd pay...""I don't care. I'd rather flush my food than give it to you."The three of them trembled with anger."Tell Hans to stop hiding behind Tamara while he sends you here to beg. He lives off women and still thinks he's better than everyone else?""You're out of your mind!"They thought I was going mad from being hurt by Hans' infidelity, so they didn't dare to be too pushy."Fine! You'll regret this!"With those words meant to sound tough but coming out more as a bluff, they slunk off, running away in a hurry. After this incident, these flies wouldn't dare to bother me again for a while.I shut the door. Evelyn's POVI read Hans's text twice and laughed under my breath.Hans's social circle looked glamorous on the surface. But he was just a regular werewolf guard for the Ironthorn Pack, relying on the pack to make ends meet. Most of the people who gave him a birthday today were only there for the party. His house was filled with junk food and snacks that would be gone in no time. And none of them knew how to cook or stock up on supplies.Even if they managed to find a few boxes of instant noodles and cookies, it wouldn't be enough to feed this hungry pack.I glanced at the time; the message was an hour old.It seemed these pampered parasites had finally resorted to scavenging.I checked my phone. Several parents who usually acted superior were thanking me in the group chat. My warning had helped them buy food in time. One even directly transferred some thank-you money.I didn't bother clicking on any of it.In this eat-or-be-eaten world, cash and digital balances were just pieces of p

Evelyn's POVThis floor had three units per elevator, and the other two were completely empty.I frowned as I pulled open my security door and stepped out.The door to 1801 next door was wide open, revealing a brand new stainless steel door that had been torn off and tossed aside. A young man in casual clothes was using an electric drill, sparks flying as he drilled holes into the wall.He paused when he heard the door opening, turning his head warily. Our eyes met. I stared at his hard, familiar face. "What are you doing here?"He seemed surprised to see me. He gave me a polite nod, then went back to work. His lean frame hid a lot of strength. Everything about him warned people to stay back.My wolf whispered in my head, He's a werewolf too.I felt a chill run down my spine and quickly retreated to my room, locking the blast-resistant door behind me.Everything had changed in this life.Who would install three heavy stainless steel blast doors at home before anyone knew the apocalyps

Evelyn's POVThe 1.2-mile drive was short, and the Hummer pulled smoothly to a stop at the entrance of the apartment complex.I held out two thousand dollars. He didn't even look at it. "Keep it. It was just a ride."I put the money away. Before I got out, I said, "This storm could knock out power and water. Stock up while you still can."Pushing open the car door, I ran into the complex, raindrops pelting down.I stepped out of the elevator, soaked to the skin. Hans and Tamara stood outside my apartment. They had clearly been waiting for a while.Hans's face was dark with barely contained anger, while Tamara wore an innocent expression. Her white dress stood out starkly against the dim hallway."What took you so long?" Hans demanded. "We've been waiting half an hour."The thought of them working together to push me into a zombie horde flashed through my mind. My stomach churned. This time, they wouldn't get away with it. They'd have to suffer every bit of despair I had experienced be

  • My Mate Killed Me—Then I Came Back   Chapter 5

Evelyn's POV The next day, my phone ringing woke me up. The screen flashed with a name: Hans. I stared at it for three seconds, then answered. “Evelyn, it’s my birthday party today. Why aren’t you here yet?” Hans’s voice sounded as gentle and sunny as ever, with the faint sound of lively laughter in the background. I sneered inwardly: ‘Of course.’ "Why would I care about your birthday?" He laughed. "Come on, Evelyn. I know you're mad about the house. Tamara just came back, and she couldn't stand the noisy pack dorms. We're staying on the eighth floor at Skyline Vista for now. Funny, right? You moved here too." He paused, sounding far too sure of himself. "Everyone's already here. Come join us, and don't forget my present. We can talk this out and move on." Hearing this, I felt a chill run down my spine. How did they end up in this building? In my previous life, I had been a fool to go to Hans, who ignored me the whole time; But in this life, they followed me t
