Evelyn's POV

The 1.2-mile drive was short, and the Hummer pulled smoothly to a stop at the entrance of the apartment complex.

I held out two thousand dollars. He didn't even look at it. "Keep it. It was just a ride."

I put the money away. Before I got out, I said, "This storm could knock out power and water. Stock up while you still can."

Pushing open the car door, I ran into the complex, raindrops pelting down.

I stepped out of the elevator, soaked to the skin. Hans and Tamara stood outside my apartment. They had clearly been waiting for a while.

Hans's face was dark with barely contained anger, while Tamara wore an innocent expression. Her white dress stood out starkly against the dim hallway.

"What took you so long?" Hans demanded. "We've been waiting half an hour."

The thought of them working together to push me into a zombie horde flashed through my mind. My stomach churned.

This time, they wouldn't get away with it. They'd have to suffer every bit of despair I had experienced before.

I pulled out my keys. "What do you want?"

Before rebirth, I had always been at their mercy. Now, it seemed Hans still wasn't used to my new attitude.

"It's my birthday. Why didn't you show up?"

"Why would I? We're not close."

"You…" Hans's face stiffened.

In his eyes, I was still the one who had been chasing him, offering to give him a birthday present. Of course, I knew he wasn't after the gift; it was Tamara's ulterior motive.

Tamara looked me over and smiled. "Hey, sweetie."

"Don't call me that. I don't know you."

Her smile stiffened. "It's Hans's birthday. We're all in the same pack. What's wrong with celebrating together?"

I rolled my eyes. "Did you miss the part where I said we aren't friends? His birthday isn't my problem."

Hans's temper flared. "What the hell is wrong with you?"

I let out a humorless laugh. "She's wearing your ring, but you keep chasing me. Are you trying to become the first wolf in Ironthorn Pack with two mates?"

"Don't make things up!" Hans shouted as he pulled Tamara away.

Tamara dug in her heels. "Evelyn, the rain's getting bad. Can I stay here tonight?"

"Not a chance. Go back to the eighth floor."

"Watch your tone," Hans warned.

"Make me."

Hans tried to drag Tamara away, but her gaze locked on my neck. Greed flashed in her eyes. "That pendant is gorgeous. Where did you get it? Can I see it?"

My hand stilled. I looked her straight in the eye. "Want it?"

Her eyes lit up. "Can I have it? Please?"

In truth, the moment the moonstone became permanently bound to my storage space, its glow dimmed, becoming just an ordinary moonstone.

So, with both of them looking stunned, I threw the moonstone pendant onto the ground. Then, I lifted my foot and crushed it underfoot.

Crack!

A sharp crack echoed through the quiet hallway, and the moonstone pendant shattered into a pile of glittering shards.

Tamara let out a startled cry, her eyes wide with disbelief and resentment as she stared at the scattered pieces on the floor.

"You're insane!" Hans roared, pointing at me.

My wolf pushed forward, sick of them both. "Get out before I rip your arms off."

Hans gritted his teeth, dragging Tamara—who looked like she'd seen a ghost—out of the room in a hurry.

I gave them one last hard look, then unlocked the heavy steel door and shut it behind me. That should keep the pests out.

The house was quiet inside. I couldn't wait to open the package from the delivery. The arctic survival suit felt heavy in my hands; its inner lining of thick down made me feel instantly warm.

The mummy sleeping bags were sewn from multiple layers of high-density down. They would keep me alive even at ninety-four below zero.

I didn't waste time. I filled several large plastic buckets with water. I even filled the bathtub inside my storage space.

Outside, the storm raged on, but inside, I worked feverishly in the kitchen. I baked bread, fried pancakes… I worked tirelessly until well past midnight before stopping.

After a hot shower, I fell into a deep sleep.

I didn't know how long I slept. Then the harsh whine of a drill jolted me awake.

I cautiously pulled back the curtain. Outside, the sky was still dark and stormy, with rain pouring down like a waterfall.

Checking my phone, it was already around 9:00 AM.

The notifications wouldn't stop. Everyone was talking about the Category 5 hurricane the media had nicknamed "the Cleaver." But as more videos and photos spread, excitement gave way to fear.

The drill kept grinding next door. Beneath the noise, I thought I heard a little girl crying.

  • My Mate Killed Me—Then I Came Back   Chapter 10

Evelyn's POVAfter working until past midnight, I took the trash out.As I passed by apartment 1801, my eyes froze on the hallway floor. Fresh, damp footprints led straight into the closed door of apartment 1801.Searching for supplies in daylight was dangerous enough. Who would dare go out at this hour?My wolf shifted inside me, a low, dangerous thrill rippling through her. This new neighbor was not someone to underestimate. The rain was cool and soothing as I drifted off to sleep. When I woke up, it was already past ten in the morning. The sky was gray and heavy with storm clouds, and water poured down like a curtain. Downstairs, there was a commotion and curses. Looking down, I saw that the murky floodwaters had risen to engulf the entire building. The first-floor residents were met with a deluge of water in their living rooms as they opened their eyes. The group chat was eerily quiet, filled only with a few blurry photos showing ankle-deep water. 911 calls were useless; the rescu

  • My Mate Killed Me—Then I Came Back   Chapter 9

Evelyn's POVI blocked the doorway. "Get outta here.""I don't owe any of you food." I let my Alpha aura roll over them. They backed up at once. "Kick my door again, and I'll take your heads off."After three years in an apocalypse, I had seen the worst of human nature and no longer believed in moralizing. They tried to stand their ground, but their voices shook. "W-we said we'd pay...""I don't care. I'd rather flush my food than give it to you."The three of them trembled with anger."Tell Hans to stop hiding behind Tamara while he sends you here to beg. He lives off women and still thinks he's better than everyone else?""You're out of your mind!"They thought I was going mad from being hurt by Hans' infidelity, so they didn't dare to be too pushy."Fine! You'll regret this!"With those words meant to sound tough but coming out more as a bluff, they slunk off, running away in a hurry. After this incident, these flies wouldn't dare to bother me again for a while.I shut the door. • My Mate Killed Me—Then I Came Back   Chapter 8

Evelyn's POVI read Hans's text twice and laughed under my breath.Hans's social circle looked glamorous on the surface. But he was just a regular werewolf guard for the Ironthorn Pack, relying on the pack to make ends meet. Most of the people who gave him a birthday today were only there for the party. His house was filled with junk food and snacks that would be gone in no time. And none of them knew how to cook or stock up on supplies.Even if they managed to find a few boxes of instant noodles and cookies, it wouldn't be enough to feed this hungry pack.I glanced at the time; the message was an hour old.It seemed these pampered parasites had finally resorted to scavenging.I checked my phone. Several parents who usually acted superior were thanking me in the group chat. My warning had helped them buy food in time. One even directly transferred some thank-you money.I didn't bother clicking on any of it.In this eat-or-be-eaten world, cash and digital balances were just pieces of p

Evelyn's POVThis floor had three units per elevator, and the other two were completely empty.I frowned as I pulled open my security door and stepped out.The door to 1801 next door was wide open, revealing a brand new stainless steel door that had been torn off and tossed aside. A young man in casual clothes was using an electric drill, sparks flying as he drilled holes into the wall.He paused when he heard the door opening, turning his head warily. Our eyes met. I stared at his hard, familiar face. "What are you doing here?"He seemed surprised to see me. He gave me a polite nod, then went back to work. His lean frame hid a lot of strength. Everything about him warned people to stay back.My wolf whispered in my head, He's a werewolf too.I felt a chill run down my spine and quickly retreated to my room, locking the blast-resistant door behind me.Everything had changed in this life.Who would install three heavy stainless steel blast doors at home before anyone knew the apocalyps

  • My Mate Killed Me—Then I Came Back   Chapter 5

Evelyn's POV The next day, my phone ringing woke me up. The screen flashed with a name: Hans. I stared at it for three seconds, then answered. “Evelyn, it’s my birthday party today. Why aren’t you here yet?” Hans’s voice sounded as gentle and sunny as ever, with the faint sound of lively laughter in the background. I sneered inwardly: ‘Of course.’ "Why would I care about your birthday?" He laughed. "Come on, Evelyn. I know you're mad about the house. Tamara just came back, and she couldn't stand the noisy pack dorms. We're staying on the eighth floor at Skyline Vista for now. Funny, right? You moved here too." He paused, sounding far too sure of himself. "Everyone's already here. Come join us, and don't forget my present. We can talk this out and move on." Hearing this, I felt a chill run down my spine. How did they end up in this building? In my previous life, I had been a fool to go to Hans, who ignored me the whole time; But in this life, they followed me t
