Chapter 3

While I was driving home, my phone suddenly buzzed. The screen lit up with footage from the surveillance camera in Xavier's office.

Under the crystal-clear lens, he had Lynette pinned against the wide office desk.

Documents were scattered across the floor. Lynette's pencil skirt had been pushed up to her waist, and her pale legs were wrapped tightly around Xavier's hips.

"Why don't you go home and sleep with her instead?" Her voice was soft, with a tinge of grievance.

Xavier lowered his head and brushed a quick kiss against her cheek. "She's dry as a bone. How could she compare to you? Just looking at her body turns me off."

As he spoke, his hands roamed over her body before finally settling between her thighs.

Lynette gasped and dragged her nails down his back, leaving thin scratches behind.

Xavier continued to drive into her.

The scene was unbearable to watch, and the sounds were grating.

My fingers trembled. Then, Lynette lifted her head from Xavier's shoulder and stared straight into the camera.

I had always handled the pack's administrative affairs, so Xavier didn't know that every office in the building had surveillance installed.

But Lynette did. She had watched the cameras being installed herself.

She did it on purpose. She was showing off.

My stomach burned. It felt like thousands of insects crawling under my skin. I yanked the car door open and vomited violently.

Ten minutes had passed, but the nausea didn't ease.

Without hesitation, I turned the car around.

Half an hour later, a healer at the pack's medical center handed me a report with a bright smile. "Congratulations. The pregnancy is confirmed. You're six weeks along."

I froze.

My body had been weakened ever since I lost my wolf. The healers had once told me it would be very difficult for me to conceive.

I had long believed I would never have a pup of my own.

So how could I be pregnant? And at a time like this, no less.

My mind went blank as I took the report. One of the pages slipped from my hand and fell to the floor.

I scanned through it, and the first thing I saw was the name at the top.

"Lynette Quinton. Eight weeks pregnant."

I looked down at the report in my own hand. A chill spread through my entire body when I saw that I was only six weeks pregnant.

My pup was two weeks younger than hers.

"Ugh!" I doubled over and vomited again.

"Luna Zoey, you…"

The healer choked off the rest of his sentence. He stiffly bent down and picked up Lynette's report from the floor. "I'm sorry, Luna. We mixed up the reports by mistake."

I took the report from him. At the bottom of the page was Xavier's bold signature.

The healer's face turned visibly pale.

"Alpha Xavier ordered us not to tell anyone," he stammered. "He said it was to protect the pack's reputation…"

Protect the pack's reputation?

No. He was protecting his mistress and illegitimate pup.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to calm down.

"I won't pursue this matter. But I also don't want Xavier to know about my pregnancy."

I folded Lynette's report and slipped it into my bag.

Stepping out of the medical center, it felt like the night wind had gotten colder.

I placed a hand over my still-flat stomach. I was carrying a pup in there.

The pup's father, on the other hand, was currently tangled up with another she-wolf in his office.

I stayed in the living room all night, but Xavier never came home.

It wasn't until daylight flooded the house that I finally heard the sound of a key in the door.

Xavier walked in with my favorite breakfast in his hand. In his other arm was a large gift box.

I stood up and noticed Lynette standing behind him. She had changed into a white dress and wore a pitiful look.

"Lynette's here to apologize," he said. "She felt terrible about ruining your gift yesterday, so she picked this out especially for you."

Lynette took the box from his arms and opened it. Inside was a teddy bear holding a baby bottle.

"You and Alpha Xavier haven't had a pup all these years. I hope this brings you some luck."

Everyone in the pack knew that I lost my wolf back when I saved Xavier. I had even lost the pup that had already begun to form inside me.

After that, the healers declared I would never be able to have children again.

There was no way Lynette didn't know that.

Xavier led Lynette into the room, then turned and went to the kitchen to get some water.

Smiling, Lynette pushed the teddy bear into my hands. "Luna Zoey, are you still upset with me?"

"Doesn't that act get tiring?" I flung the pregnancy report at her face.
