Chapter 2

Autor: Forest
The wrecked records room was only the beginning.

The day of the ambush, Gabriel's best friend, Marcus Hale, had been killed.

Because Gabriel had reported me to the Werewolf Court as a suspect, the entire Bloodclaw pack turned against me.

Even our own Alpha, James, texted me.

“Stay home and rest. Keep a low profile for now.”

He said that once Gabriel cleared my name, I could come back and train the pack's warriors again.

Things stayed that way right up to Marcus's funeral, and I still hadn't heard a word about being cleared.

Marcus had always looked out for me. After my foster father died, he'd often come by to talk, and he'd even given me his favorite sapphire brooch.

Before Gabriel and I were due to have our marking ceremony, Marcus had taken me to Bloodclaw territory several times so I could get familiar with my future home.

Just the week before, he'd asked me about my weekend plans. Now he lay silent in a coffin.

The moment I walked into the church, Marcus's mother saw me.

She rushed at me and shoved me to the ground.

“What are you doing here? You're not welcome! He was so good to you! Why did you leak the route?

“You got him killed. It was you!”

She collapsed to the floor, sobbing and screaming, and her family helped her back up.

I got to my feet, ready to defend myself. Before I could say anything, Marcus's older brother, Owen Hale, looked at me.

“Nia, I know you're a suspect.

“Until the investigation is over, I won't assume you're responsible for Marcus's death.

“But you don't get to say goodbye to him. Go home.”

The church was full of Bloodclaw wolves. They crowded around the entrance, blocking my way.

They glared at me with open hatred, and I heard them cursing me.

“The treaty wasn't even signed yet, and Black Moon set up an ambush?”

“Three of our warriors are dead. Is that what Black Moon calls good faith?”

“We told Alpha James to hand you over, and he refused. He said he believes you're innocent! Who's going to buy that?”

I knew nothing I said would change their minds, so I scanned the crowd for Gabriel.

Gabriel was Marcus's best friend. There was no way he'd miss the funeral.

He knew I was innocent. If he just came out and explained, Bloodclaw would back off.

But Sera came out before Gabriel did. She looked at me and said softly, “Nia, you shouldn't have come.”

I faced the crowd.

“Your people already searched the records room at the training grounds, and Gabriel went through my phone.

“If you won't let me in, fine. But I had nothing to do with that leak.”

Sera ignored me and went back to get Gabriel. When he came out, she told him, “You talk to her. I don't know what happened the day of the search.”

Gabriel looked at me and frowned.

“Nia, Marcus's death has been devastating for all of us. Please stay away.

“Don't worry. I'll keep looking into this and clear your name.”

I stood there, stunned.

The first thing he did was tell me to leave instead of backing me up in front of his pack.

I had lost all faith in him. I turned and left without looking back.

When I got home, I took out the letter my foster father had left me. In it, he'd told me who my real parents were and how to reach them.

Before he died, he'd told me that if Gabriel ever hurt me, or if I ever got into trouble, I could go to my parents for help.

I stared at her number for a long time before I finally texted my mother.

“Mother, I'm in some trouble. Could you please help me?”

It was like she'd been waiting to hear from me. She replied right away.

“Tell me what you need, and I'll take care of it.”

When I read that, the tears came. It was the first time in over 20 years that I'd ever been in touch with my real mother.

After that, the Werewolf Court would decide whether to let him return. The afternoon the verdict came down, urgent news arrived from the border. The White Night pack had lain low for two years before joining forces with two smaller packs. The day I went back to the training grounds, the sun wasn't up yet.The gates had been repaired, and the records room had new cabinets.I went home to get my foster father's old box and put it back in its usual spot. The next day, I resumed training the pack's warriors.During a break, James pushed open the door and walked in.“Nia.”“Alpha. What can I do for you?”After a moment, James said, “First, Gabriel's trial is taking longer than expected. We won't have a verdict until next year.”I nodded.“And second?”“Second... Audrey asked me to pass something along.“She's given you access to Bloodclaw's intelligence room. You can pull any file you want, anytime.”“Got it.”He hesitated before going on.“There's one more thing. Audrey and I split up all those years ago because of the hatred between our packs.“Leaving you with your foster father was the only choice we had.“Your mother and I love you very much. All these years, we could only find out how you were doing through him.”I did

I looked at Gabriel. Apologizing made him seem almost like a stranger. He'd always been so cool and self-assured around me, as if no one else was worth his notice. Now his hands were cuffed, with an officer on either side of him. He looked at me, exhausted.“Can you forgive me?”I didn't answer. He continued, “I know saying sorry doesn't fix anything. But I...”I looked at him.“Gabriel, there's something I need to tell you.”He stopped talking, and I went on, “I, Nia, Alpha Female of the Black Moon pack, formally reject you as my mate.”Gabriel fell silent for a moment. Then, his voice shaking, he asked, “Nia, what did you say?”I answered calmly, “I reject you. I'm ending our mate bond.”The color drained from his face, and he took a step forward.“Nia, why?”“I don't want anything more to do with you.”“We just had our ceremony. I still love—”Losing patience, I cut him off. “When you reported me, did you even remember you loved me?“Every time you abandoned me for Sera, did you cal

On my third day in custody, Daniel came to see me. He sat down across the table and slid two files over.“Audrey's people recovered the deleted footage from the intelligence room.“Sera went into the intelligence room the night before the ambush and stayed for almost half an hour. When she came out, she had a document in her hand. The camera caught it all, clear as day.”When I didn't say anything, he showed me the other file.“There's a problem with the footage Gabriel submitted. We've confirmed it rained that night, but in the video, the ground under the streetlight is dry.“The tech department has issued its report. The footage was edited and spliced together.“As for the voice recordings, Audrey's people questioned the patrol members, who admitted that Gabriel had put them up to giving false statements.”With evidence this strong, I could finally breathe. Daniel continued, “We have enough. I've filed the paperwork. The second hearing is tomorrow.”The next day, I was brought before

The moment Jack pulled out those two items, I knew Gabriel had come fully prepared.Jack handed the evidence to the judge.“The USB drive contains security footage from the night Marcus was on patrol.“This report concludes that the recordings Ms. Reed submitted were fabricated. One of our pack's technical specialists reviewed the findings and signed off on the report.”The judge had someone plug the USB drive into a computer and turn on the projector. Jack handed him the document. Before playing the video, Judge Harlow read through the document, then looked at me.“Ms. Reed, I've reviewed the report. It was prepared according to the required procedures and certified by the technical department.“In the interest of fairness, we still need to watch the footage on the USB drive.”Then he played the footage for the court. The footage showed me entering the patrol station where Marcus was stationed at around 10:30 that night.Marcus, the patrol captain, was there with several members of hi

I'd just received my mother's message and was about to leave when a court summons arrived. The summons said Gabriel had petitioned the Werewolf Court to reopen my case and was charging me with perjury. He claimed Sera was innocent, that I'd framed her to clear my own name, and that I'd illegally fabricated the recordings before the trial. Then he went public on Facebook, claiming he had a key witness and hard evidence that I'd faked the recordings, and made a show of how disappointed he was in me.“Hi, everyone. I'm Gabriel, Bloodclaw's Beta and Nia's husband. I've always been too lenient with her. Even when she made a terrible mistake, I couldn't bring myself to hold her accountable.“It was only after I marked her that I began to see Nia for who she really is. I'm deeply disappointed.“Sera is innocent. She doesn't deserve to suffer for Nia's selfishness.“Tomorrow, I'll bring a witness and evidence to court, testify on Sera's behalf, and make sure she gets justice for everything she
