I paced back and forth in my living room, the soft thud of my footsteps against the hardwood floor mingling with the low hum of the clock ticking away in the background. Each second felt like an hour. The last time we spoke, everything was cut short by Jessie’s sudden appearance from behind the bushes. I couldn’t believe that she had the audacity to interrupt my conversation, to stop me from finally voicing the things I needed to say or stalk me. I had to hide her face from Jessie and escape before things got worse. There were questions I still needed answers to, things I’d buried under the weight of my own indecision. I couldn’t shake the feeling that tonight, things would either shift or shatter entirely.

Ten minutes passed, or maybe it was closer to fifteen, but it felt like hours before the doorbell finally rang. I didn’t need to check the surveillance cameras to know who was at my door. I knew that scent, the intoxicating blend of strawberries and vanilla. I knew that gleam in th

“Did he hurt you?” I ask, my voice low but laced with urgency as we pull into the parking garage of what’s now become our building. I roll down the window, press the key card to the scanner, and wait for the metallic click of the gate unlocking. The soft hum of the motor opening almost feels too calm, too normal, in contrast to what we’ve just walked away from.“It’s just slight bruising. On my arms. Nothing more.” Her words are mechanical, a rehearsed line. She’s trying to make it small—something forgettable. But it’s not.I glance over at her, the way she avoids eye contact. “Why didn’t you yell? I would’ve come sooner. I was right outside.”“It all happened so fast. I didn’t even have the opportunity to react.” Her voice cracks, just slightly. She’s not brushing it off—she’s disoriented. This isn’t her trying to stay strong. This is shock. This is someone who’s been continuously traumatized. Maybe more times than I want to imagine.Guilt coils in my gut like a steel spring. “I shou

Lincoln waited until the nurse arrived and the officer took his place at my side to go retrieve the car to meet us at the entrance. The whole concept of being escorted by a man branded with handcuffs and multiple weapons was both foreign and frightening to me, but I wouldn’t protest if it meant I was safe. And at this moment I was.As we rounded the corner the next corridor, I feel a presence cornering as well as feel panic rise in me for what feels like a millisecond. Thankfully, my eyes were able to focus and I see Officer Miller approaching. I feel my heart pounding restlessly, trying to settle itself as I try to catch my breath.“Hi Jessie, good to see you’re being discharged.” Assuming this was a formality that they’d continue working on my case, I tried not to get my hopes up especially when I noticed that Officer Pennet was absent.“Thank you.” I say politely as the nurse stops just before him, allowing us to speak privately as her and the other officer leave for a moment. I ma

I waited for Ryan to finalize and send over all the documents via email for Jessie and I to review. As her legal advisor and attorney, I advised her that the wisest decision would be to solely rent the penthouse under a realty group right now so that Alan would have no rights’ nor access to the property. Ryan would be the responsible realtor for the property via handling an anonymous “escrow investor and occupant” account while maintaining the leasing agreement and tenancy relationship with the landlord. Alan would be none the wiser, Jessie’s whereabouts would be safe and her assets - protected until the divorce is finalized. After going over each detail and explaining each legality, I ensure that it was safe for her to sign. with Alan’s financial reach, you could never be too careful. Especially after the look I saw in his eyes. He wasn’t going to let Jessie go without a fight. It was death or til’ death do they part.Unfortunate for him, he hadn’t expected Jessie to survive today.

It’s probably the fourteenth time I’ve watched the surveillance video of the imposter nurse. I’ve memorized every frame—the way she moves, the flicker of hesitation in her posture, the cold, deliberate calm as she slips into the hospital room where Jessie lay barely conscious. The way the door wasn’t pushed completely closed. She’s a ghost, moving through shadows, her identity as fluid and false as the name she used to check in. Nothing new reveals itself, and yet I keep watching, as if sheer repetition might force the truth to show its face. The only details we have come not from the grainy footage but from Jessie and the one brave witness— who barely caught a glimpse of her before being injected as he slapped her. Blonde hair, somewhere in her mid-40s to early 50s. Long red acrylic nails like blood-tipped claws. And possibly injured—bruised or worse—after a scuffle during the attack. That last part is pure speculation, but it’s all we have at this point. But having been slapped by a

After a satisfying and somewhat indulgent dinner of Chinese food, Lincoln and I, both a little stuffed, decide to take matters into our own hands and explore our options for rental properties. Lincoln, always the one to take charge, wastes no time and calls a friend of his who happens to be a local realtor. It’s clear he’s trying to be proactive, but a small part of me still isn’t convinced anything will happen today. It’s already evening.“Do you really think we’ll be able to find something?” I ask, a hesitant doubt to my voice. “It’s already 5 PM.” Alan will probably put in some last-minute attempts to spite me, he always does.Lincoln pauses for a moment, scanning the listings with a casual determination. “Well, I have Ryan looking into a few properties for you, and we’re doing a search here too. So, I think our chances of finding something before you’re discharged tomorrow are pretty high.”I nod, feeling a flicker of hope but still wary. Lincoln then throws me a question that mak

After a few more hours of rest, I slowly rouse from my sleep, the soft beeping of machines breaking the quiet. My eyes flutter open, and I see Lincoln sitting on the couch next to my hospital bed. His attention is absorbed by his iPad, where he’s reviewing a stack of case files, the light from the screen illuminating his face. As soon as I shift, he notices me, his gaze snapping to mine immediately.“Hey, I didn’t think you’d be up so soon,” he says, a hint of surprise in his voice. “Here, let me help you sit up.” Without missing a beat, he sets the iPad down, pushes the files aside, and gently moves toward me. With a soft, practiced touch, he adjusts my pillow and raises the bed to a more comfortable position, making sure I’m as settled before sitting again.I glance at the stack of files on the table, counting at least ten in total, and feel a pang of guilt. "Thank you. Sorry if I interrupted your work,” I murmur, my voice a little strained. Was I keeping him from more important thi
