Chapter 7

作者: Inkbound
“I think you should take a look at the third trending story.”

Ian couldn't help bringing it up when he delivered the second batch of documents.

I didn't look.

I simply took the folder from his hands.

“Dr. Lowe, the Communications Office reached out. They want to know if you'd like to issue a statement. If this keeps up, it's going to start affecting your appointments...”

“Did you finish organizing the recording from Margaret Howard?”

“I did.”

“Good. There's one more person I need you to find.”

  • My Mother's Killer Came to Me for Surgery   Chapter 10

“Mom, I'm here.”A simple grave and a modest headstone were all that remained of my mother.“Mom, I found the truth.”I crouched down and placed the photograph beside the grave. The image Margaret took was blurry, the figures faded with age, but I could still make out the silhouette.“The man who hurt you didn't die by my hand.”I paused.“He was destroyed by his own greed.”The night before, Victor's condition deteriorated rapidly. The disease progressed beyond anything medication could control. He drifted in and out of consciousness, and each period of wakefulness grew shorter than the last.In the end, no one ever performed the surgery. He slipped into a coma and never woke up again.Vanessa had already divorced Ethan. As his ex-wife, she formally declined all responsibility for his father's medical decisions.Ian stood nearby, quietly waiting.“And then there's Ethan.”I pulled a court notice from my pocket and placed it beside the photograph.“He's going to prison.”I thought back

“Victor Lancaster, you are hereby under arrest.”Michael's voice carried from inside the hospital room.A crowd had gathered outside.Doctors, nurses, staff from other departments, and reporters came after hearing the news. I stood by a window at the far end of the corridor, watching from a distance. The door to the room was partially open.Through the gap, I could see Victor lying in bed.He had wasted away so badly that he barely seemed capable of pulling back his own blanket. After reading the arrest warrant, Michael added one final question.“Do you have anything you'd like to say?”“...Get my son.”To see Ethan was all Victor wanted. But Ethan never appeared.Three hours earlier, he was taken into custody and was sitting in his interview room.Simon Hart had fallen as well. He was accused of helping cover up the medical incident and resigned from all administrative positions and agreed to cooperate with investigators.None of that was my doing. It was Vanessa. Two hours before M

“Fine, Suzy. You win. Happy now?”The afternoon after the press conference, Ethan showed up outside my hotel room.Vanessa stood behind him, stripped of the fiery confidence she usually carried.“What do you want?”His voice was rough and exhausted.“If it's money, name your price. If you want an apology, you'll get one. If you want me to resign, I'll resign. Just tell me what it is you want.”“I don't want anything.”“That's impossible!”His composure finally cracked.“You've spent twenty years preparing for this. You went to all this trouble. Don't tell me it was just to make a scene at a press conference.”He stepped forward and blocked my path.“I know you hate me. I know you hate my father. Fine. But he's dying. Whatever he did before, right now he's just a patient.”I took a step back and leaned against the doorframe.“Ethan, if you'd thought that way twenty years ago while standing over my mother's operating table, do you think she'd still be alive today?”His mouth opened. Then

There's one more person I need you to find.”After Ian left, Ethan called.“Suzy.”This time he didn't call me Dr. Lowe. The politeness had finally disappeared from his voice.“What do you want?”“Nothing.”“That's impossible. Everyone has a price.”“Do they?”I leaned back in my chair.“Have you ever considered that some things can't be measured with a price tag? Ask your father. He'll know. Or maybe he won't. From what I hear, he can barely speak these days.”Silence stretched across the line.“You'll regret this.”“Ethan, are you sure th

“To everyone here today, the document I'm submitting today is a formal request for recusal.”The conference room was even more crowded than it was the day before. In addition to the hospital's physicians and administrators, four representatives from the Kingsford Health Authority were present.“A recusal request?”Robert looked up.“Dr. Lowe, do you have any idea what people are saying about you online right now? And you're still asking to recuse yourself?”“That's exactly why I need to explain everything here today.”I opened the folder and pulled out the first document.“The patient scheduled for surgery is Victor Lancaster, the surgeon responsible for my mother Linda Lowe's death twenty years ago.”The room fell silent.Everyone stared at me in shock.“On July 10, 2004, my mother was admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery at Kingsford General Hospital after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. “The lead surgeon was Victor Lancaster, then Chief of Neurosurgery. During the procedure,

“Dr. Suzy Lowe Refuses Life-Saving Surgery for Critically Ill Patient—Whatever Happened to a Doctor's Duty?”By eight o'clock the next morning, the story became the top headline on three major medical news sites. The comment sections had already exploded.“If she wasn't happy with the fee, she should've just said so instead of making excuses.”“The second she saw a difficult case, she ran. And this person is supposed to be an expert?”“Maybe that perfect success rate comes from cherry-picking easy cases and avoiding the risky ones.”I handed the phone back to Ian.“Did you find what I asked for?”“I did.”Ian pulled a sheet of paper from his bag.“She retired years ago and lives on the south side of the city now. But, Dr. Lowe, from what I found, she doesn't seem interested in seeing anyone.”“Set up a meeting for me. Tell her the daughter of Linda Lowe wants to see her.”Ian glanced at me before nodding.A knock sounded at the door.I opened it to find Ethan standing in the hallway.“
