Chapter 54: Almost

"I want to call you my sister!"

The words hit Sloane like cold water.

"I'm not your sister." She kept her voice gentle. Steady. Poured every ounce of control she owned into those five words.

Jamie's face collapsed.

His bottom lip trembled. His eyes flooded. He stood there in the forty-second floor hallway of PIERCE Tower — this small, innocent, catastrophically well-meaning child — and let out a sob that echoed off every wall.

"Nobody wants me."

He stood there in the forty-second floor hallway of PIERCE Tower — this small, innocent, catastrophically well-meaning child — and let out a sob that echoed off every wall."Nobody wants me." His voice cracked. "Not my brother. Not my sister. Nobody."He turned and ran.Three steps in, he caught his foot on absolutely nothing and went down hard — sat on the floor, looked at his own palms, and howled. His driver materialized from nowhere, scooped him up like a football, and disappeared into the elevator before the echoes faded. The hallway went very quiet.Sloane turned around.Declan stood in the office doorway.

His face was inches from hers. And Sloane's hands were still pressed flat against his chest from the push she hadn't meant to throw. Why did I do that? The thought ricocheted through her skull like a pinball. Why did I push him? He's going to—Declan had stepped back. One step. Jaw tight. Eyes burning with something that was darker and more dangerous than anger — because anger she could navigate. This was something else. Something patient and controlled and coiled like a spring at maximum tension."I didn't mean to." The words came out in a rush. Panicked and small. "It was an accident, I swear, my hands just—""You think you can run from me." He wasn't asking. He moved forward, one step, reclaiming the space she'd created, and Sloane's back hit the wall behind her before she realized she'd been retreating."I'm not running." Her voice cracked on the second word. "I would never — I'm not &md

The memory hit her like a wave she couldn't outrun.Three years ago. That hotel room. That night. The specific, devastating reality of Declan Pierce — and she hadn't been prepared, she'd been twenty-two and heartbroken and running on whiskey and bad decisions, and God, she still wasn't prepared—"Let me think about it," Sloane said. The words came out steadier than she had any right to. She pulled herself upright on the sofa cushions, smoothed her blazer, and looked at him with the composed expression of a woman who was absolutely not reliving the most consequential night of her life while trapped under his gaze."This is a significant decision." She held his eyes. "I'd like time to consider."Declan stared at her. Those black eyes — unreadable as always, patient as always — moved across her face like he was running a calculation that had too many variables. Then he reached into his jacket pocket. Pull

The tray hit the floor. The crash split the silence of the office wide open — ceramic pieces skidding across dark hardwood, coffee spreading in a dark bloom — and Sloane barely registered any of it because Declan Pierce had just pulled her off her feet. One arm. One motion. Effortless. She landed on his lap — half-upright, half-sprawled against his chest, completely off-balance — and her brain went completely, catastrophically blank."Let go—" She pushed against him. Both hands on his chest, fingers gripping expensive fabric, pushing with everything she had.He didn't move. Not an inch. Not a fraction. He held her like gravity held the earth — absolute, inevitable, not even trying."Where," Declan said, his voice dropping to something dangerously quiet, "did you think you were going?"She looked up at him.Bad idea. Those black eyes were right there — clo

The moment Sloane set the second cup down, Tyler's mouth opened."She's good." He said it casually, eyes still on Sloane's face — that careful, loaded gaze she'd learned to dread. "I'm actually short-staffed right now. What do you say, Dec? Give her to me."The air in the room changed. She felt it before she processed it — the specific pressure shift that came with Declan Pierce's attention moving from neutral to focused.Don't react, she told herself. Don't look at him. Don't look at either of them. You are a coffee tray. You are furniture."Miss Carter."She looked up.Declan's eyes were on her. Black, sharp, the full force of his attention leveled at her like a searchlight. "Did you hear what he said?"The question hung in the air like a live wire. She set the tray down on the side table. Turned to face Tyler directly, because if she looked at Declan right now she would combust.

"You don't want to know," Tyler said."Stop trying to scare me.""I'm not trying to scare you. I'm telling you — leave PIERCE Group before he finds out. Before all of it comes apart."Sloane gripped the phone so hard her knuckles ached. "Why do you even care? You walked away from me four years ago without a backward glance. You don't get to show up now and start issuing warnings like you have a stake in this.""I have more of a stake than you think." His voice dropped. "Just leave, Sloane.""It's none of your business." She hung up.The cab hummed through Chicago traffic. She stared out the window at the amber glow of streetlights and told herself Tyler was exaggerating. Told herself she had things under control. She didn't believe a word of it.What did Claire do? The question turned over and over. What happened between the Pierce family and my mother that made Declan cut everyone off so co

Three years later."Breakfast! The city never slept. Neither did its pain.Chicago's skyline bled neon through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Ember Lounge, but Sloane Carter wasn't looking at any of it. She was staring at the ring of condensation her glass left on the bar, counting drinks the way other women counted regrets.Se

That hand.Sloane stared at Declan's fingers locked around her wrist and couldn't stop thinking about it — the same hand that had snapped a grown man's wrist like a dry twig thirty seconds ago. Cool skin. Ironclad grip. Not a tremor of hesitation. This man is dangerous."Hello again, Miss Carter."

The second the revolving doors of PIERCE Tower spat her back onto the sidewalk, Sloane tipped her head toward the gray Chicago sky and let out a breath that was one syllable away from a scream. What have I done? She'd just accepted a job — been hand-picked — by the man whose DNA her six children we
