Chapter 3

Author: Javan Zest
However, just as I was about to put the emerald bracelet away, it was snatched from my grasp.

I looked up and met Cassandra's eyes, which were filled with malicious mockery.

She sneered and said, "So, the eldest daughter of the Hanson family has fallen so low that she's stealing other people's things now?"

My chest tightened when I saw her casually twirling the bracelet on her fingertip. I instinctively reached out to grab it back from her.

"Who said that I stole it? Give it back! If you break it, you won't be able to afford to compensate for it!"

Cassandra scoffed. "It's just a cheap bracelet. Wanna bet that even if I really broke it, Dree will just blame you for it?

"You saw just how much he adores me with your eyes, didn't you? He thinks that I have depression and is terrified of upsetting me. Honestly speaking, I don't know how you still have the nerve to continue sticking around and always getting in the way."

The moment she said that, realization dawned on me.

"Wait, your depression is fake?"

Cassandra continued toying nonchalantly with the emerald bracelet as she said, "If I hadn't done that, how else would he have come abroad to see me and bring me back?"

Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed from outside the door. Cassandra's eyes darted around, and she suddenly smashed the bracelet hard against the floor.

Before I could even react, she slapped herself across the face and burst into terrified sobs.

"I'm sorry, Jillian! It's all my fault! I'm sorry, I never should have shown up in front of you again! I never wanted to steal Adrian from you! Please, please, just let me go…"

"Jillian Hanson! You have a death wish, don't you?" Adrian's furious voice roared out.

Moments later, a hard slap landed across my face. I fell heavily to the ground, and half my face swelled up instantly.

Adrian frantically gathered Cassandra into his arms, tenderly restraining the hand she was using to strike herself in the face. She huddled into his arms, sobbing pitifully.

"Dree, she smashed the emerald bracelet herself and insisted that it was my fault! She said that she was going to tell you all about it!

"I know that she still hates me a lot. I never should have come back here! I never should have appeared in front of her! I'm so scared!"

Her words immediately triggered memories of the past for Adrian. Guilt and resentment flashed in his eyes, and he turned an icy gaze toward me.

I forced myself to ignore the stinging pain in my face and my heart. I gritted my teeth and retorted, "She's lying! I never did anything of the sort!"

Just in case, I had started recording audio on my phone the moment I entered the room, and I had proof. I hurriedly pulled my phone from my pocket.

"She doesn't have depression at all! She was also the one who broke the bracelet! I have—"

However, before I could finish, Adrian slapped the phone out of my hand, sending it crashing to the floor.

"You're still making your stupid excuses, Jillian? Didn't I tell you to stay in the guest room and never show your face to Cassie?

"Look at what you've reduced her to! And you still have the nerve to question her depression and accuse her of faking it? Did I not teach you a hard enough lesson before this?

"Well, since you refuse to leave her be, then don't blame me for not letting you off the hook either!"

With that, he picked Cassandra up bridal-style again and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

I stared at his retreating back and instinctively curled my hand into a fist, digging my nails into my palms until they left bloody indents in the flesh.

Since he didn't love me anymore, he wasn't even willing to listen to a single word of explanation from me.

But it didn't matter anymore. I wouldn't be an eyesore to him much longer.

Yet I hadn't expected Adrian's retaliation to come so swiftly. Just the very next day, a flood of negative news about Hanson Group erupted online, and all of our senior executives jumped ship en masse while our business partners called Dad one after another to cancel their contracts and partnerships.

In just a few short days, Hanson Group ran out of capital and teetered on the brink of bankruptcy.

Mom and Dad had only just begun to recover when they were hit by this devastating blow, and it seemed as though they aged ten years overnight.

I was consumed by a heart-wrenching mix of guilt and anguish. I stared at the audio recording I had on hand and decided to make one last desperate attempt.

But Adrian wasn't answering my calls, so I had to go to great lengths to find out from his friends which club he was currently hanging out at.

Just as I arrived outside the private room, I heard Adrian and his friends roaring in laughter.

"You really pulled it off this time, Adrian! I can't believe you really hired someone to pose as a kidnapper and cripple your future father-in-law. You sure helped avenge Cassie for what happened back then and even managed to squeeze plenty of benefits out of the Hanson family in the process!"

"That's Adrian for you! He knows exactly how to have that bitch from the Hanson family wrapped around his finger like she's nothing but a lapdog!"

Upon hearing this, Adrian instinctively shook Cassandra off and hurried to explain himself to me."Jill! Don't listen to her nonsense! You're the only one I've ever cared about!"I listened impassively, not believing a single word he said."I don't care what kind of delusions you've got, but take that troublemaker you've brought with you and get out of my sight!"Adrian seemed stung by my stern expression. His eyes filled with panic as he tried to reach out and hold my hand, but before he could even touch me, Cassandra grabbed his hand and forcefully yanked it right back, her eyes widening incredulously."Dree! What the hell are you saying? What do you mean by saying that you only care about Jillian? Then what do you take me for?"The veins on Adrian's forehead bulged out in anger as he glared at Cassandra icily."Don't you know exactly what you are to me? I've already given you plenty of money, so why the hell did you follow me all the way here? Just get lost! And stop pushing

I shook Adrian off and retorted with a frown, "No. He's nobody relevant. Just ignore him. Let's go."With that, I ducked straight into Bob's car. However, that infuriated Adrian even more, and he stopped me from closing the car door before yanking me right back out."How dare you say I'm nobody relevant? I am your fiance, Jillian Hanson!"I replied impassively, "No, not anymore. You've already proposed to Cassandra. Why are you coming here and acting like a deranged lunatic instead of planning your wedding with her back home?"But he completely misunderstood me. He grasped at straws as he shot back in agitation, "See? I knew that you still cared about me, Jill! You're just upset that I proposed to Cassandra, aren't you?"Before I could even refute him, he hurriedly continued, "Don't worry! That was all just a sham! I never actually intended to marry her!"You left me without a word, Jill. No calls, no texts—you even refused to see me and blocked me on all your social media accoun

Mom stopped Adrian from trying to grab my hand again, yelling at him, "On what grounds? You were the one who destroyed our family and reduced us to this state. What makes you think that my daughter would still be willing to keep your child? She aborted that child a long time ago!"As she spoke, Mom took out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket and threw it in Adrian's face. My eyes widened as I turned to look at her and Dad.I had been afraid that they would get even more upset if they knew that I was pregnant, so I never told them about it. I'd also aborted the child behind their backs. I never expected that they would already know about it.I looked at the faint traces of dried tears on the paper and felt my heart ache painfully for them. I couldn't even imagine how heartbroken they must have been when they found out about it.Adrian stared at the abortion surgery report in disbelief, grasping the edges of the paper so hard that his knuckles turned white."Impossible! How c

Whenever we had free time, Mom, Dad, and I would go fishing, hiking, or to the park together. Life was rather pleasant and leisurely for us, and I rarely thought about Adrian anymore.I knew nothing about what happened in Seaview City after I left, and I certainly never expected to see Adrian again. One day, I went to the restaurant to help out after work. A few customers there tried to leave without paying their bill. During the ensuing argument, I was roughly shoved to the side and stumbled right into someone's arms.I hurriedly tried to steady myself and apologize, but in the next moment, a familiar, angry voice rang out from above me at once."Jillian Hanson! Did you even think about the baby in your belly when you were arguing with them? What if I hadn't caught you? What would have happened if you'd fallen?"I was stunned for just a moment. Then, I blurted, "Adrian Dickson? What are you doing here?"After making the troublemakers pay, Adrian turned to me with a look of displ

Photos of Adrian and Cassandra kissing under a sky full of fireworks were widely circulated by the media. Aside from that, Cassandra also often shared sweet moments of her everyday life with him on her social media account every single day.I only found out about this when I accidentally saw her stories on social media. In the photo that I saw, Cassandra was leaning on Adrian's shoulder, smiling happily at the camera while he looked down at her with a rare smile on his otherwise cold face.I stared at the photo like I was in a trance.Adrian hadn't smiled at me like that ever since that incident back then.I wasn't even surprised about the proposal either, since he liked Cassandra so much and had just reunited with her. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore anyway. After calming myself down, I decisively logged out and deleted all of my social media accounts. That was also why I didn't know about what happened just three days after that.It was the day of the

Mom and I were just about to board the plane when I got a call from Adrian."Jillian Hanson! What the hell are you doing? Do you even have any idea what you just sent me?"He seemed so furious that even his voice was trembling uncontrollably. The sight of the fetus had unsettled him just as I'd intended, but for some reason, I couldn't feel happy about it.It struck me at that moment rather incongruously that his reaction was actually laughable. He was acting as though he actually cared about that child."Can't you tell what it is? That's your baby, Adrian."Before I could go on, he cut me off, his breathing ragged as he exploded in rage, "What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Did you really think you could get a hold over me just by finding some aborted fetus in the trash and sending it my way?"Get over here and apologize at once! If not, you can forget about your parents' company completely!"I listened calmly to him and responded flatly, "Oh, okay. I'll forget about it. Go
