Chapter 2

Author: Javan Zest
I swore I would never love Adrian again after that day.

When Mom and Dad were brought back to safety, they were completely covered in blood. The tendons in Dad's legs had somehow been bitten through by the snakes, and our private doctor said that he might never be able to stand again.

Upon hearing the news, Adrian suddenly flew into a rage and smashed everything in the house.

In my daze, I seemed to hear him making a couple of angry calls outside, shouting at someone over the phone.

I didn't catch the details, nor did I have the energy to care. I simply rushed Mom and Dad straight to the hospital.

But after receiving the same grim prognosis from the doctors at the hospital, I couldn't hold back anymore and fell into Mom's arms after she regained consciousness, sobbing uncontrollably.

"It's all my fault, Mom! If only I hadn't reported that incident back then… I'm the reason why you and Dad ended up in this state!"

Mom shook her head at me, her eyes red as she stroked my swollen cheek, unable to say another word.

Dad clasped my hand and Mom's as tears welled in his eyes.

"We watched Adrian grow up and trusted him too much. I know that he's had a hand in the decline of our family over these past few years too.

"He's always been very calculating, and he holds such a big grudge against you. It would be even more tragic for you if you actually married him in the end!"

Dad's words suddenly brought memories of the past flooding back to me.

The Hanson and Dickson families used to go way back, and Adrian and I had grown up together, sharing a deep bond with each other.

Before Cassandra appeared, Adrian used to follow me around wherever I went. He'd smile the moment he saw me, and he loved holding my hand, interlacing his fingers with mine.

He once said, "Mom and Dad want me to take over Dickson Group and keep forcing me to do things I don't like. I only feel like I'm able to catch a break when I'm with you. I like you so much, Jill."

His straightforward, passionate declarations used to make me blush, and getting engaged to him seemed like the natural course of things.

But after Cassandra appeared, everything changed. The eyes that used to only look at me had shifted to her at some point. And eventually, he saw my tears and grievances as nothing more than attempts to get his attention, and he soon grew annoyed with me.

I simply couldn't wrap my head around it.

He was the one who had begged Mom and Dad for my hand in marriage, and yet, in the end, he painted me as the villain who tore him and Cassandra apart.

I felt hurt and even jealous. And then, in a moment of impulse, I told his parents about his relationship with Cassandra.

The Dicksons had always placed great importance on social standing, and if the elders in the family didn't approve of his partner, there would be absolutely no way for him to be with her.

However, I hadn't anticipated the disastrous consequences that would follow.

I should have known that from that moment on, there was simply no way we could ever go back to the way things used to be.

I took a deep breath, my gaze slowly hardening with resolve as I said, "Mom, Dad, I'm not marrying Adrian anymore."

…

On the day Mom and Dad were finally discharged from the hospital, I returned to the Dickson villa to retrieve my documents.

But as soon as I opened the door, I was met with a scene of utter disarray.

Clothes were scattered all over the floor, and the wet, explicit sounds of lovemaking came faintly from the kitchen. Moments later, I caught sight of the two people completely entangled with each other in the kitchen.

Cassandra was supposed to be abroad, but she was here now, completely naked, her face flushed with passion as she clung to Adrian.

Meanwhile, Adrian's hand was wandering between her legs with a tender, lustful, yet restrained look in his eyes that he'd never once shown me.

Even though I had already decided to let him go, witnessing this scene still made my heart ache uncontrollably.

My stomach churned, and I couldn't help but retch.

Adrian finally noticed my presence. His expression stiffened for a moment before it quickly reverted to cold indifference.

He then casually explained, "Cassie was drugged at a party. I was just helping her deal with it. She'll be staying in the master bedroom for the next few days.

"Once you've cleaned up the kitchen and living room, take your things and move to the guest room. And don't let her see you. You're only going to upset her."

Then, he picked her up bridal-style and went into the bathroom without even waiting for me to answer. He seemed certain that I would obediently do everything as told.

I simply smiled wryly, wondering if I'd loved and spoiled him too much over the years, so much so that he thought he could trample all over me without facing any consequences.

I turned and went upstairs. In a fit of anger, I shredded every single photo of Adrian and me before tossing the pieces in the trash.

After gathering all of my important documents, I opened the safe and removed the emerald bracelet from my wrist.

Adrian's mother, Hannah Gardner, had placed it on my wrist herself on the day we got engaged, telling me that it was an heirloom passed down through generations of the Dickson family to their daughters-in-law.

But since I no longer intended to marry Adrian, the emerald bracelet ought to be returned to its rightful owner.

Upon hearing this, Adrian instinctively shook Cassandra off and hurried to explain himself to me."Jill! Don't listen to her nonsense! You're the only one I've ever cared about!"I listened impassively, not believing a single word he said."I don't care what kind of delusions you've got, but take that troublemaker you've brought with you and get out of my sight!"Adrian seemed stung by my stern expression. His eyes filled with panic as he tried to reach out and hold my hand, but before he could even touch me, Cassandra grabbed his hand and forcefully yanked it right back, her eyes widening incredulously."Dree! What the hell are you saying? What do you mean by saying that you only care about Jillian? Then what do you take me for?"The veins on Adrian's forehead bulged out in anger as he glared at Cassandra icily."Don't you know exactly what you are to me? I've already given you plenty of money, so why the hell did you follow me all the way here? Just get lost! And stop pushing

I shook Adrian off and retorted with a frown, "No. He's nobody relevant. Just ignore him. Let's go."With that, I ducked straight into Bob's car. However, that infuriated Adrian even more, and he stopped me from closing the car door before yanking me right back out."How dare you say I'm nobody relevant? I am your fiance, Jillian Hanson!"I replied impassively, "No, not anymore. You've already proposed to Cassandra. Why are you coming here and acting like a deranged lunatic instead of planning your wedding with her back home?"But he completely misunderstood me. He grasped at straws as he shot back in agitation, "See? I knew that you still cared about me, Jill! You're just upset that I proposed to Cassandra, aren't you?"Before I could even refute him, he hurriedly continued, "Don't worry! That was all just a sham! I never actually intended to marry her!"You left me without a word, Jill. No calls, no texts—you even refused to see me and blocked me on all your social media accoun

Mom stopped Adrian from trying to grab my hand again, yelling at him, "On what grounds? You were the one who destroyed our family and reduced us to this state. What makes you think that my daughter would still be willing to keep your child? She aborted that child a long time ago!"As she spoke, Mom took out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket and threw it in Adrian's face. My eyes widened as I turned to look at her and Dad.I had been afraid that they would get even more upset if they knew that I was pregnant, so I never told them about it. I'd also aborted the child behind their backs. I never expected that they would already know about it.I looked at the faint traces of dried tears on the paper and felt my heart ache painfully for them. I couldn't even imagine how heartbroken they must have been when they found out about it.Adrian stared at the abortion surgery report in disbelief, grasping the edges of the paper so hard that his knuckles turned white."Impossible! Whenever we had free time, Mom, Dad, and I would go fishing, hiking, or to the park together. Life was rather pleasant and leisurely for us, and I rarely thought about Adrian anymore.I knew nothing about what happened in Seaview City after I left, and I certainly never expected to see Adrian again. One day, I went to the restaurant to help out after work. A few customers there tried to leave without paying their bill. During the ensuing argument, I was roughly shoved to the side and stumbled right into someone's arms.I hurriedly tried to steady myself and apologize, but in the next moment, a familiar, angry voice rang out from above me at once."Jillian Hanson! Did you even think about the baby in your belly when you were arguing with them? What if I hadn't caught you? What would have happened if you'd fallen?"I was stunned for just a moment. Then, I blurted, "Adrian Dickson? What are you doing here?"After making the troublemakers pay, Adrian turned to me with a look of displ

Photos of Adrian and Cassandra kissing under a sky full of fireworks were widely circulated by the media. Aside from that, Cassandra also often shared sweet moments of her everyday life with him on her social media account every single day.I only found out about this when I accidentally saw her stories on social media. In the photo that I saw, Cassandra was leaning on Adrian's shoulder, smiling happily at the camera while he looked down at her with a rare smile on his otherwise cold face.I stared at the photo like I was in a trance.Adrian hadn't smiled at me like that ever since that incident back then.I wasn't even surprised about the proposal either, since he liked Cassandra so much and had just reunited with her. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore anyway. After calming myself down, I decisively logged out and deleted all of my social media accounts. That was also why I didn't know about what happened just three days after that.It was the day of the

Mom and I were just about to board the plane when I got a call from Adrian."Jillian Hanson! What the hell are you doing? Do you even have any idea what you just sent me?"He seemed so furious that even his voice was trembling uncontrollably. The sight of the fetus had unsettled him just as I'd intended, but for some reason, I couldn't feel happy about it.It struck me at that moment rather incongruously that his reaction was actually laughable. He was acting as though he actually cared about that child."Can't you tell what it is? That's your baby, Adrian."Before I could go on, he cut me off, his breathing ragged as he exploded in rage, "What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Did you really think you could get a hold over me just by finding some aborted fetus in the trash and sending it my way?"Get over here and apologize at once! If not, you can forget about your parents' company completely!"I listened calmly to him and responded flatly, "Oh, okay. I'll forget about it. Go
