Chapter 7

Author: Tangle H
On graduation day, I left with my old backpack, same as always.

The cameras in the apartment caught me walking down the hall, heading for the bus stop.

My parents assumed I was on my way to school.

At the next stop, I transferred to the airport bus.

There was nothing in that home worth taking.

Two changes of clothes, my admission papers, and a photo my grandmother left me filled the whole suitcase.

At the airport, I took out my old SIM card, snapped it in half, and dropped it in the trash.

  • My Parents Raised My Twin Rich and Me Poor for the Cameras   Chapter 13

Once the case went to trial, I never logged in to Prism again. It didn't exist anymore anyway.I made a lot of new friends. Some came from Italy, some from Poland, and there was a French girl who was always falling asleep in math class.School was exhausting, and the restaurant work wasn't easy either. But every dollar I earned was truly mine. And every closed door was just a door, never something to be broken down in the middle of the night. After class that day, I stepped out of the supermarket as the Berlin evening breeze swept the street. The setting sun rested on the distant rooftops. No stream notifications on my phone, no missed calls from Grant.I stood there a moment, then carried the fresh bread I'd just bought down the street. Before eighteen, my life had an audience every single day. After eighteen, I finally didn't need an audience at all.

Two days later, I got a call from Lily. The moment it connected, she was screaming through tears."Happy now? This is all your fault!""If you hadn't cheated Dad out of that money, we wouldn't have lost the house, and I wouldn't be forced to get engaged to that old man!"I heard her out, then asked her just one thing."What if you had been the one sent to the basement at twelve?"The other end went quiet."If Mom and Dad had picked you for the poverty experiment, would you have done better than me?"Lily's breathing grew faster."You're lying. They chose me because they love me.""They love you, so they traded you for their debts?"She let out a scream."At least they'll still come for you! When they drag you back, you'll be handed to some sixty-year-old man too!"I hung up.Then I opened my laptop and laid out six years of saved material on a single timeline.Grant thought the streams had only recorded my suffering. They had also recorded every crime, every lie, and every payment they

After the semester started, I rarely logged in to Prism. The coursework was hard. Between classes and my restaurant shifts, I had no time left to watch that family perform. That changed when a classmate told me someone on Prism was livestreaming the search for a rich husband for his daughter.I clicked in and found the host was Grant. The old show had been taken down. The new one was called "Who Gets to Marry the Reed Family Princess?"Lily sat at the center of the frame, wearing an expensive red gown.Grant told the audience that whoever settled the Reed family's debts could win the chance to date Lily, get engaged to her, even co-manage her online accounts."My daughter deserves the most powerful man."He made it sound like a compliment. But the bottom of the screen displayed the amount each bidder was willing to pay.Lily was eighteen now.On paper, she could sign of her own free will. But sitting there, her fingers wouldn't stop trembling. The winner was Victor Hargrove, fifty-four

Lily actually posted it.Two days later, the video appeared on multiple social platforms. She had cut out the parts where she jammed the door, dumped the water, and ordered the others to grab me, leaving only footage of me huddled in the stall, soaked and disheveled. The caption read: [This is what that scholarship girl who abandoned her family is really like in private.]She thought people online would mock me.But the first thing anyone recognized was the silver lily badge on her phone case.It was the emblem of her private school's student council.Someone found photos from the academic summit and quickly pieced together the full timeline.[This isn't a scandal. It's bullying.][Why was the person behind the camera stripping the victim's clothes off in a bathroom?][Already reported to the school and the police.]By the time Lily deleted the video, it had over two million views. She deleted it far too late.I had saved the original video, the recording of her blackmailing me in Berl

  • My Parents Raised My Twin Rich and Me Poor for the Cameras   Chapter 9

Two weeks after arriving in Berlin, I found a part-time restaurant job.I barely spoke German, so I started with the simplest tasks: taking basic orders and cleaning. The work wasn't easy, but the owner paid on time.At night, back in my student apartment, no one pounded on the door.I was getting used to this ordinary life. That changed one afternoon, when the manager told me someone was outside asking for me.Through the glass door, I saw Grant, Rachel, and Lily standing at the curb. They looked exhausted from the trip, luggage piled at their feet. The moment Rachel saw me, her eyes reddened.Lily turned her face away. They had tracked me down after all.I didn't let them into the restaurant. This job hadn't come easy, and I wasn't going to let Grant start a stream in front of the customers or let Rachel put on a tearful reunion scene.I took off my apron and stepped outside."Whatever it is, say it here."Rachel rushed over and grabbed my hand."Emma, we were wrong. Come home with u

Lily was the first to recover."If my sister doesn't want to come back, just let her go."She took Rachel's arm, the corners of her mouth twitching upward despite herself. With me gone, she was the only daughter again. But she celebrated too soon. Two men in black suits cut through the crowd and stopped in front of Grant."Grant Reed?"Grant was busy shutting off the comments, his voice sharp."Who are you?"One of the men opened a folder, showing the signature on the last page."Reed Family Media's one-million-dollar advance is now in default."The contract required me to appear in the finale in person. With the star gone and the show undeliverable, the platform had the right to immediately claw back the advance plus penalties. And Grant was the personal guarantor.Grant stared at his own signature, his face draining white."Emma set this up. She got a cut of the money too. Go after her!"The man closed the folder."The sixty thousand dollars was legally mandated compensation for six
