Chapter 2

Author: Jade
The Mancini and Cecil families had always been enemies. Sanchez of the Mancini family had been a thorn in my father's side for years. Whatever he wanted now, it couldn't be good.

I was right. Explosions erupted outside, punctuated by gunshots.

The villa's windows shattered under a hail of bullets, and panic swept through the hall.

The panicked crowd shoved me backward. As I turned to look for cover, my father roared, "Everyone in the Cecil family, protect Valentina with everything you have!"

My father stepped back to shield Valentina. All twenty-four bodyguards closed ranks around her until no one could get through.

More family members joined the circle at his command, forming an impenetrable wall around him and Valentina.

But my father didn't spare me a glance. He hadn't said a word about protecting me.

I stood frozen, as if an invisible hand had tightened around my heart.

In that moment of distraction, a bullet grazed my calf. My knees buckled, and I crashed to the floor.

The searing pain made it almost impossible to stand. I forced myself to lift my head and look at my mother, who stood right beside me.

"Mother, it hurts..."

My hands shook as I tentatively reached out and gripped the hem of her dress.

She looked down at me without a trace of concern in her eyes. Her gaze slid past me as she wrenched the hem from my grip.

"Are you still trying to cause trouble? You've been stealing from Valentina since I carried you both in my womb, and now you're blocking her escape. Cecilia, fend for yourself!"

With nothing left to hold on to, I lost my balance. The back of my head struck a pillar. My mind went blank, and the ringing in my ears drowned out even the gunfire.

I watched her step over my body without looking back and run straight for the ring of guards.

Another blast shook the villa. The crystal chandelier tore free of the ceiling and crashed toward me.

I closed my eyes. I didn't have the strength left to move.

But the impact never came. I was yanked aside and pulled into a warm embrace.

I opened my eyes in shock and met a frantic gaze.

Lorenzo.

"Why didn't you move? That crystal chandelier almost crushed you."

Lorenzo held my hand as he checked me over from head to toe.

"It's only a graze. Let me bandage it for now. I'll take you to a doctor as soon as we get out. Can you walk?"

I stared at him and forgot to answer.

Mancini shells kept raining down. In the chaos, I'd assumed Lorenzo had found somewhere to hide or joined that impenetrable ring of guards.

"You... didn't leave with them?"

I opened my mouth, but my voice came out hoarse. Lorenzo scooped me into his arms.

"You're my wife. I should protect you.

"My car is parked out of sight. Do you want to come home with me, or go with them?" Lorenzo asked.

I blinked and looked past his shoulder toward Valentina.

My parents, their treasured daughter Valentina, and the family members around them were retreating in an orderly group toward the safe passage.

Not one of them looked back at me.

My eyes burned. A single tear slipped from the corner of my eye and fell to the floor.

I closed my eyes and buried myself in Lorenzo's embrace. The last hope I'd held for my family vanished amid the gunfire.

"Take me home, Lorenzo."

The men behind him rushed forward and pinned her to the ground.Valentina couldn't break free, so she thrashed wildly, her bloodshot eyes fixed on me."Let go of me! I'm going to kill you!"My father went white and stumbled back several steps, afraid Valentina would drag him down with her. Then he shouted at me, "Cecilia, this has nothing to do with me. She's the one who went mad and tried to kill you!"Valentina was the one who demanded your ring too!""Bullshit!" Valentina lifted her head and roared at my father."You put that list in my hands yourself. You let me bully Cecilia our whole lives. You're no better than I am."My mother sat crumpled beside them, crying and pounding the ground. "Stop it. We're family..."I watched coldly as they turned on one another and traded blame. I felt nothing. If anything, I wanted to laugh.Lorenzo frowned in distaste and waved a hand."Take them away. Dump the

(Cecilia’s POV)After that call, Lorenzo gave me the grandest wedding in Sicily. The ceremony took place in the Raphael family's private chapel. I wore a white wedding gown made by the finest artisans and encrusted with tiny diamonds worth a fortune. Lorenzo and I exchanged rings in front of everyone. No one dared call me the freebie that came with Valentina's wedding anymore. In their eyes, I was now far beyond their reach.Afterward, Lorenzo joined me for tea beside the fountain on the estate. He leafed through his intelligence reports and said calmly, "The Cecil family is completely bankrupt. To cover the shortfall, your father stole cargo belonging to the Mancini family. Sanchez is hunting him across the city."As for Valentina, the Moretti family stripped her of all her clothes and jewelry, then dumped her in the street."My hand went still around my teacup."They brought it on themselves."He pinched my cheek fondly."The Donna is right. They brought it on themselves."Lorenzo wa

(Third person’s POV)The men in black threw Cecilia's parents out. At the street corner, they stared at the armored cars bearing the Raphael crest and froze in terror. The Raphael family stood at the pinnacle of Sicilian power. Cecilia's parents barely dared to look any of its members in the eye."How could Lorenzo possibly be Don Raphael?" Her father sank to the ground, his tie askew and his eyes unfocused. Her mother muttered in disbelief, "This has to be a lie. How could Cecilia ever be that lucky..."Reality proved them wrong soon enough. They watched Cecilia take Lorenzo's arm and climb into a Raphael car. When they returned to the Cecil estate, terrible news was waiting for them."Don, the southern port is closed. The Raphael family has cut off all our shipping lanes.""The Moretti family has sent an ultimatum. They're pulling their investment. They say the princess we sent them is a fool who only knows how to spend money.""The Mancini family keeps eating into our territory. Don

I took a deep breath and tried to process what the name Raphael meant. The Raphael family was the most powerful in Sicily. They controlled every shipping lane in the Mediterranean, kept a low profile, and showed no mercy. Every other Mafia family played by their rules."Then why... why were you tending bar?" I looked at him, my voice still unsteady. He seemed close to my age.I could never have imagined that he was Don Raphael. He took my hand, his eyes turning cold. "I don't have any Italian blood. I fought hard to become the don of the Raphael family. Some of its members resented my rise, so they joined forces with other Mafia families and had my cargo hijacked."Everything that happens in Sicily gets talked about at that bar. I went undercover there myself to smoke out the traitors."He paused, then continued more gently, "But I never expected to meet you. Cecilia, you were the one surprise I could never have planned for."I laughed at myself. "So you let me play the fool while you

"Lorenzo, don't worry," I said with my face buried against his shoulder, my voice muffled."I've left the Cecil family, but my grandfather left me something."My grandfather secretly left me several properties and a trust fund. I'm the only one who can access it at the bank."Nobody else knows. If they really come after us, I can get you out of Sicily."Lorenzo paused as an unreadable emotion flickered in his eyes. At last, he nodded gently. "All right. We'll do it your way."Back at Lorenzo's home, members of the Cecil family came looking for me two or three times. The first time, the Cecil family advisor came with two bodyguards and looked around the cramped room."Cecilia, the Don says that if you agree to see Mr. Sanchez, you can have the ring back and remain a Cecil princess."Lorenzo and I shut the door in his face.Later, a maid sent by my mother slipped a check under the door."The Donna says a bartender's wages can't support you. Change your mind, and this money is yours."I t

He had always favored Valentina over me, but he had never once raised a hand to me."Father..."My cheek stung. I covered it with one hand and stared at my father in disbelief. He looked back at me coldly. "Do you still consider me your father?"Tears filled my eyes as I nodded numbly."Something went wrong with our operations at the southern port. Sanchez seized the shipment," my father continued."We all know what kind of man he is. He sent word that the Cecil family must give him a daughter, or he'll destroy the entire shipment."If you still consider me your father, you owe it to the family to help us. Go pack. Sanchez's car will come for you tonight."I froze. Tears hung on my lashes without falling. I couldn't believe what I'd heard. He wanted to tear me away from Lorenzo and hand me over to a madman. What kind of father did that?At some point, Valentina had pulled out a white handkerchief and started pretending to cry."Cecilia, if I hadn't married into the Moretti family, I'd
