Chapter 1

As I stared at the number "1590" glaring back at me in the score column, I couldn't make sense of it.

I'd spent years studying harder than anyone just for a shot at an elite university, and I couldn't even count how much I'd sacrificed along the way.

I finally pulled off a score that guaranteed me a spot at Wexford or Danforth University. But when it came time to apply, no matter what I chose, my application always defaulted to Fernbrook Vocational School, a trade school that accepted scores around 800.

Why was this happening? It was a nationwide application system, so there was no reason it would glitch.

As my mind raced, Mom patted my shoulder, looking thrilled. "Callie, what are you just sitting there for? Hurry up and fill out your applications! We've already looked into it for you. With your score, you can pick any program you want at Wexford or Danforth!"

Dad couldn't stop grinning either. "That's right. Artificial intelligence has a bright future right now. If you ask me, Wexford is the way to go!"

Watching my parents go back and forth so excitedly, I felt a bitter ache inside.

What was the point of talking about the best universities and programs if my application turned into Fernbrook Vocational School the second I submitted it? It would all be for nothing.

I had to come up with something!

But when I told my parents I wanted to think it over before applying, they both got anxious.

"Callie, what's there to think about? Your dad and I both graduated from elite universities. Do you really think we'd steer you wrong?"

Dad jumped in. "Exactly. And from what I know, spots in Wexford's AI program go fast, so you have to grab one early. Once they fill up, it won't matter how high your score is. You can't let an opportunity like this slip away!"

I was suddenly torn. I'd done my research ahead of time, so I knew they were right, and I really did love this program. But the moment I thought about the strange things that happened when I applied in my past life, I lost all my confidence again.

Just then, my uncle, Wade Prentiss, called out of the blue. He asked us to help my cousin, Toby Prentiss, with his college applications. That gave me an idea.

Things went wrong when I applied both at home and through the consulting firm in my past life, so why not try somewhere else this time? After all, in my past life, Toby had taken our advice and applied from home without any problems.

I didn't waste any time. Using the excuse that I wanted to talk to Toby about school, I dragged my parents over to Uncle Wade's house.

With their years of experience, my parents quickly came up with recommendations for him. Toby's family was thrilled and pulled up the computer right away to submit.

I took the chance to suggest that we both apply at the same time. Toby happily agreed, and since my parents couldn't wait for me to submit my applications, they nodded right away too.

So we opened the application system on the same computer and entered our information one after the other. To be completely safe, once we'd double-checked that everything was correct, I had Toby submit first.

Without a second thought, he hit submit, and a screen saying his application had gone through popped up the next second.

Only then did I relax a little. I took a deep breath and clicked submit too.

"Alright," Dad said with a faint smile.Blood had never been what made us family.Later, I learned that the police and the education department had called an emergency joint meeting about the case. Once my case was reported, the state admissions office took it extremely seriously.Tech experts worked through the night to restore my student information, and my application access was reopened. But it seemed the spots in Wexford's AI program were already full. Just as I was getting ready to face reality, one of the Wexford admissions officers called, sounding apologetic. "Callie, we're so sorry, but the spots in our program…"My heart sank."But we managed to get an extra spot added for you." The officer suddenly laughed. "The university president approved it himself. He said Wexford can't afford to miss out on a promising student like you."I was stunned, then tears welled up in my eyes. Not long after, I learned the outcome of the case. It had gone to court, and Wade, Dustin,

"Swapped?" I repeated.Mom nodded. "Yes. Your real student ID number is under Toby's name, and his is under yours."Something suddenly clicked. Every time I applied, I'd entered my own information. But if my student ID number wasn't mine anymore, then I'd actually been filling out Toby's application. With his 830, applying to my schools would get him rejected outright, and the system would automatically match him with a school that fit his score, which was Fernbrook Vocational School. It all made sense now.But Captain Dorsey noticed something off. "Swapping student ID numbers would take someone inside the application system. You two couldn't have pulled that off on your own, so you must have had an accomplice!"Mom didn't say anything."Who's your accomplice?" Captain Dorsey's voice turned harsh.Mom looked up at me. Her eyes held guilt, fear, and something else I couldn't read.I crouched down and took her hand. "Mom, if you still think of me as your daughter, then tell m

Mom looked at me and shook her head frantically. "Callie, there are some things you're better off not knowing.""Mom!" I was practically yelling. "My whole future's about to be ruined, and you're still keeping secrets from me?"Mom looked over at Dad, whose expression changed too. "Honey, what exactly have you been hiding from us?"He clearly had no idea what she was talking about either.Mom closed her eyes, and tears slid down her cheeks. "Callie isn't your daughter."The room went dead silent. I stood rooted to the spot, my mind completely blank. Dad froze, his lips trembling, unable to say a word. Captain Dorsey and the officers all stepped back toward the door, unsure whether they should keep listening."What did you say?" Dad finally asked, his voice sounding like a stranger's."I said Callie isn't your daughter." Mom's voice was frighteningly calm. "I was already pregnant with her before I married you 18 years ago.""Then whose child is she?" Dad's voice shook.Mom di

Mom was clearly shocked. "Wade, what's that supposed to mean?"Uncle Wade was quiet for a few seconds. "Lorna, I know you've always been good to me. But do you have any idea what my life's been like all these years? I work at a factory for barely 2,000 dollars a month, and my kid's grades are a disaster.""Wade, what—""Let me finish," Uncle Wade cut in. "I'm not jealous of you. I'm just out of options!"Toby took the SAT this year too. Do you know what he got? An 830! With a score like that, he can't even get into community college. He's all I've got, and if he can't get into college, I don't think there's anything left for me to hope for!"Mom didn't say anything.Uncle Wade went on. "But there's a way to get Toby into a good school.""What way?""An admission swap."Mom paused. "What do you mean?""We find a student with a high score and swap their spot with Toby's. The high scorer goes to Fernbrook, and Toby goes to their school."Mom's voice changed. "Are you out of you

The car stopped outside Uncle Wade's building. Captain Dorsey had two officers wait downstairs and took my parents and me up.When we got to the door, Captain Dorsey rang the doorbell, but no one answered. He rang it again, but still no one answered."Is nobody home?" Captain Dorsey frowned and looked at his deputy. The deputy checked their police-issued phone, and their expression turned grim. "Wade Prentiss' phone signal shows he left the city two hours ago. His current location is… about 190 miles away."Uncle Wade's whole family had run off? What did that mean? Nobody said a word, but everyone knew the answer.Captain Dorsey immediately ordered a roadblock and had someone call a locksmith to open Uncle Wade's door. Everything inside looked exactly the same as the last time I was there, and nothing seemed out of place."Check his computer," Captain Dorsey ordered. An officer went into Toby's room and opened the laptop on the desk. It hadn't been shut down, only closed, so t

My mind reeled. A dead man had tampered with my college application? How was that even possible?I stared at Captain Dorsey in shock, but he looked just as baffled. "Captain Dorsey, besides Ambrose himself, who else would know his login?"Captain Dorsey's gaze shifted. "In theory, only he would, since everyone keeps their own system password."He was quiet for a few seconds. "But in reality, other people in the IT department could know it too. From our initial investigation, at least 13 people are suspects."I took a deep breath. Which of those 13 people was it, and what was their motive?"There's one more thing," the deputy said, staring at me. "The logs show that the IP address used to change your application isn't at the testing board. It's at your uncle's house."The room went silent again, and a shiver ran through me. My uncle's house? That made no sense. If I hadn't been reborn, I never would've gone to Uncle Wade's house to apply in the first place.Besides, I'd applied
