Chapter 4

It said the application had been submitted successfully.

The two officers immediately patted my shoulder and beamed.

"There's absolutely nothing to worry about now, so you can relax! We'll see you at Wexford in September, and we'll treat you to the best food on campus!"

But when I thought about what happened at Uncle Wade's house, I still couldn't put my mind completely at ease. "Are you sure nothing will go wrong? I won't end up at some place like Fernbrook Vocational School again, will I?"

Both of them shook their heads right away. "You're overthinking this! This is our school's internal system. Even if something goes wrong, the worst that could happen is a mix-up with your major, and we can fix that later. There's no way you'd end up at a different school!"

Only then did I relax. Surely nothing could go wrong now, right?

But just as we were warmly seeing the two officers out, they got a phone call. Within seconds of answering, their faces changed, and they turned to me in shock.

"The review team says they never received your application. When they looked into it, they found you'd applied to the excavator operation major at Fernbrook Vocational School!"

My head started ringing, and I nearly collapsed.

Mom and Dad frantically asked what was going on, but the two officers were just as confused. "How is that possible? We clearly..."

They exchanged a look and hurried to open the laptop. The moment the application page came up, we were all stunned. My application now listed Fernbrook Vocational School, with a major in excavator operation.

The two officers cried out at once. "This can't be happening! This is Wexford's internal system, so how did Fernbrook Vocational School end up on here? Did someone hack into the system? Who would have the nerve?"

Since this was such a big deal, we called the police right away. Because it involved college admissions, the police took it extremely seriously and immediately brought in several top tech experts to figure out what was wrong with the system.

But in the end, they concluded that no hacker had broken into it.

When I heard that, I nearly lost my mind. If it wasn't a hacker, why did my application keep mysteriously turning into Fernbrook Vocational School?

Fortunately, once the police learned about my situation, they agreed to let me apply through their secure system. When they saw I was still uneasy, one of the police officers took the time to explain.

"This secure system has military-grade protection and stability, and it's among the best in the world. It hasn't made a single error since it went live."

"We don't want to see a promising student like you held back, so we put in a special request for you. Using it for a college application is total overkill, so there's no way anything can go wrong!"

That reassured me. This was the police department's most advanced system, so how could a college application possibly go wrong on it?

Soon, with everyone watching, I carefully filled out my application. After we double-checked it again and again, I clicked submit one last time.

As the loading circle spun, every nerve in my body went taut. This was my last chance, and nothing could go wrong this time.

After a few seconds, the page suddenly loaded, and every choice I'd made went through without a single change. But just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the page refreshed, and my application listed the excavator operation major at Fernbrook Vocational School yet again.

At that moment, I finally broke down completely. I'd used the most advanced system available and prepared for every possibility, so why did my application still turn into Fernbrook Vocational School?

I'd always been a kind person who worked hard and did things the right way, so why was I being punished like this?

Just then, a small detail flashed through my mind, and I suddenly understood exactly what was going on.

"Alright," Dad said with a faint smile.Blood had never been what made us family.Later, I learned that the police and the education department had called an emergency joint meeting about the case. Once my case was reported, the state admissions office took it extremely seriously.Tech experts worked through the night to restore my student information, and my application access was reopened. But it seemed the spots in Wexford's AI program were already full. Just as I was getting ready to face reality, one of the Wexford admissions officers called, sounding apologetic. "Callie, we're so sorry, but the spots in our program…"My heart sank."But we managed to get an extra spot added for you." The officer suddenly laughed. "The university president approved it himself. He said Wexford can't afford to miss out on a promising student like you."I was stunned, then tears welled up in my eyes. Not long after, I learned the outcome of the case. It had gone to court, and Wade, Dustin,

"Swapped?" I repeated.Mom nodded. "Yes. Your real student ID number is under Toby's name, and his is under yours."Something suddenly clicked. Every time I applied, I'd entered my own information. But if my student ID number wasn't mine anymore, then I'd actually been filling out Toby's application. With his 830, applying to my schools would get him rejected outright, and the system would automatically match him with a school that fit his score, which was Fernbrook Vocational School. It all made sense now.But Captain Dorsey noticed something off. "Swapping student ID numbers would take someone inside the application system. You two couldn't have pulled that off on your own, so you must have had an accomplice!"Mom didn't say anything."Who's your accomplice?" Captain Dorsey's voice turned harsh.Mom looked up at me. Her eyes held guilt, fear, and something else I couldn't read.I crouched down and took her hand. "Mom, if you still think of me as your daughter, then tell m

Mom looked at me and shook her head frantically. "Callie, there are some things you're better off not knowing.""Mom!" I was practically yelling. "My whole future's about to be ruined, and you're still keeping secrets from me?"Mom looked over at Dad, whose expression changed too. "Honey, what exactly have you been hiding from us?"He clearly had no idea what she was talking about either.Mom closed her eyes, and tears slid down her cheeks. "Callie isn't your daughter."The room went dead silent. I stood rooted to the spot, my mind completely blank. Dad froze, his lips trembling, unable to say a word. Captain Dorsey and the officers all stepped back toward the door, unsure whether they should keep listening."What did you say?" Dad finally asked, his voice sounding like a stranger's."I said Callie isn't your daughter." Mom's voice was frighteningly calm. "I was already pregnant with her before I married you 18 years ago.""Then whose child is she?" Dad's voice shook.Mom di

Mom was clearly shocked. "Wade, what's that supposed to mean?"Uncle Wade was quiet for a few seconds. "Lorna, I know you've always been good to me. But do you have any idea what my life's been like all these years? I work at a factory for barely 2,000 dollars a month, and my kid's grades are a disaster.""Wade, what—""Let me finish," Uncle Wade cut in. "I'm not jealous of you. I'm just out of options!"Toby took the SAT this year too. Do you know what he got? An 830! With a score like that, he can't even get into community college. He's all I've got, and if he can't get into college, I don't think there's anything left for me to hope for!"Mom didn't say anything.Uncle Wade went on. "But there's a way to get Toby into a good school.""What way?""An admission swap."Mom paused. "What do you mean?""We find a student with a high score and swap their spot with Toby's. The high scorer goes to Fernbrook, and Toby goes to their school."Mom's voice changed. "Are you out of you

The car stopped outside Uncle Wade's building. Captain Dorsey had two officers wait downstairs and took my parents and me up.When we got to the door, Captain Dorsey rang the doorbell, but no one answered. He rang it again, but still no one answered."Is nobody home?" Captain Dorsey frowned and looked at his deputy. The deputy checked their police-issued phone, and their expression turned grim. "Wade Prentiss' phone signal shows he left the city two hours ago. His current location is… about 190 miles away."Uncle Wade's whole family had run off? What did that mean? Nobody said a word, but everyone knew the answer.Captain Dorsey immediately ordered a roadblock and had someone call a locksmith to open Uncle Wade's door. Everything inside looked exactly the same as the last time I was there, and nothing seemed out of place."Check his computer," Captain Dorsey ordered. An officer went into Toby's room and opened the laptop on the desk. It hadn't been shut down, only closed, so t

My mind reeled. A dead man had tampered with my college application? How was that even possible?I stared at Captain Dorsey in shock, but he looked just as baffled. "Captain Dorsey, besides Ambrose himself, who else would know his login?"Captain Dorsey's gaze shifted. "In theory, only he would, since everyone keeps their own system password."He was quiet for a few seconds. "But in reality, other people in the IT department could know it too. From our initial investigation, at least 13 people are suspects."I took a deep breath. Which of those 13 people was it, and what was their motive?"There's one more thing," the deputy said, staring at me. "The logs show that the IP address used to change your application isn't at the testing board. It's at your uncle's house."The room went silent again, and a shiver ran through me. My uncle's house? That made no sense. If I hadn't been reborn, I never would've gone to Uncle Wade's house to apply in the first place.Besides, I'd applied
