Chapter 2

Author: Harpessa
However, I had never seen these men’s products and children’s toys. Besides, she handed her entire $5,000 salary to me every month. How would she still have more than 100 thousand dollars in her account?

I scrolled through her account and found that she transferred $20,000. She had been transferring the same amount every month for over nine years.

My breath hitched. I could not believe my eyes. Gritting my teeth, I tapped on her income records.

She gave birth to our son the year after we got married. After her maternity leave, she returned to work. She begged me to resign and take care of our child. She told me she could be the bread-winner of the household.

Very soon, she claimed that her company was not doing well, so her salary had been reduced to only $5,000 a month.

She told me to watch every penny and not to spend it on new clothes. Instead of physical books for our son, I could only get e-books. She would even nag me when I bought a little extra meat at the market.

I could no longer stand it, so I decided to find work too.

However, someone had to take care of our son, Jack Reid, when I was at work.

Grace’s parents did not like the city. My parents offered to help, but she said our house was too small for two more people.

After that, she suggested we hire a nanny. I felt that we were already tight on money, and we would not have the extra cash to hire a nanny.

She shrugged and said that in that case, I might as well stay home and take care of our son full-time.

I gritted my teeth. Then, I found Ken.

Because we were paying him very little, his only tasks were to take care of Jack and make lunch and dinner. I would still be in charge of breakfast and other house chores.

Out of my $6,000 salary, $4,000 went to Ken, and the remaining $2,000 went toward Jack’s education. Her $5,000 covered all our living expenses. Even though we were not rich, we could manage fine.

[Income: $50,000.]

I was dumbfounded when I saw that.

She was earning $50,000 every month, but she only handed me $5,000.

A notification appeared on the tablet. There was a transfer of $15,000.

She had been transferring money to her mother every month for nine years.

Every month, she transferred $15,000 to her mother, $20,000 to Ken, and kept $10,000 for herself. She gave me $5,000 our entire household expenses.

Jack and I were last on her priority list.

I bit my lower lip and tried to exit the app to find other records. However, I saw a few new text messages.

[Mom, same as usual. Save money and buy some gifts for Ken and his daughter.

My hand trembled, and the tablet fell onto the bed.

I looked at the bathroom door and heard her still showering. Through the foggy glass door, I saw Grace texting.

The last bit of hope I had quietly died.

I clenched my fists tightly.

It seemed that I needed to pay a visit to his mansion.

The next day, Grace left for work at six in the morning as usual.

After she left, I asked a friend to babysit Jack and went to Cloud Mansion.

The mansion looked like a castle. There were a garden and a balcony, even a sunroom on the third floor. There was a basement too.

It was the kind of home I had never even dared to dream of.

Soon, the door opened.

Ken stepped out, dressed casually, holding the hand of a young girl in a private school uniform.

Grace was holding the little girl’s other hand as she gestured to someone behind her.

“Say goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa!”

My parents-in-law walked over and lovingly stuffed the little girl’s arms with snacks.

I felt a lump in my throat.

Jack would turn nine years old this year, but he had only met his grandparents twice.

They kept saying that they were busy in the countryside and were unwilling to come to the city to help out with Jack. They also did not want us to visit them.

I had nearly broken down in exhaustion and had brought it up to Grace before. But she urged, “I don’t have a good relationship with my parents. If they come over, we’ll definitely get into a fight.”

However, her so-called “estranged” parents were staying in a mansion and playing the role of loving grandparents to someone else’s child.

“My client claims that during the marriage, the other party purchased a mansion and transferred a huge sum of money without my client’s consent. This is a violation of marital law, and we demand the recovery of the assets.” Grace frowned and glared at me. I smiled and indicated for her to listen. “Here is the conversation history to prove that Grace was transferring $15,000 every month to her mother. She framed it as parental support, but she was using that money to purchase gifts for her affair partner. This is a misuse of marital assets, and we demand the recovery of these assets.” Grace almost went insane. She stood up abruptly. She was very clearly pregnant. She pointed at me and screamed, “Sam, you’re forcing me to a dead corner!” Ken sat anxiously behind Grace. “No way! Grace, Hailey still needs to attend her private school. We can’t give him the money!” The judge hit the gavel. Grace’s lawyer told her to sit back down. Her lawyer whispered something in her ear. S

“We have to take this slow. After all, I’m still pregnant with his child. How about this? After I give birth, I’ll send him a sum for child support, then I’ll slowly save up…”“Why do you need to save up? Can’t I stay at Cloud Mansion?”“What are you talking about? That’s Ken’s house!”I put down the coffee cup and said, “Grace, you’re smart. You must know that buying a house and secretly spending all your money on your lover while you’re still married to another is a violation of the law. I’m sure I can get all of that when we get a divorce.“Or do you think he isn’t a homewrecker and it’s fine for you to throw money at him?“Too bad! Legally, he’s just your affair partner.”Grace’s forehead was covered in cold sweat. It was obvious that she understood everything. Before coming here, she must have consulted a lawyer and found out how low her chances of winning were. Even if I had not said anything, she would have guessed that I had accessed her tablet.I had all the evidenc

“How could I? Ken said that you paid him only $4,000. He said he couldn’t do much with that amount of money and said he was already doing plenty by preparing dinner for us.“He said that Mom agreed to that.”Jack blinked. “Mom, is $4,000 too little?” Grace almost fled that night. She could not even meet our eyes as she hurriedly left. She hastily said she had something to tend to before she barged out. Jack was confused, so he asked me in confusion, “Dad, is Mom working overtime again?“Can I still go to the theme park?”I hugged him lovingly. I was filled with bitter regret. Ken put up such a good act in front of me. He seemed passionate and honest. With his buzz cut and worn clothes, he claimed that he was a single father and had a hard time. He would prepare a lot of dishes every night and barely interacted with Grace. That was why I had never suspected anything. Grace never talked to him. Sometimes, when the food was a little too salty, she would tell me to conv

But she had lied to me and told me she only earned $5,000. She told me to watch every penny.I angrily saved everything from the tablet. Five minutes later, all accounts were logged out of the tablet. Grace was knocking on the door. “Sam, open the door. Let’s talk!“I know you’re at home. Please say something. I’m worried about you.“Sam, I’ve learned from my mistake. My mom was rambling. I only love you…“Sam, let me in! “Sam, I’m going to kick the door down if you don’t open it!” Before she kicked the door, I kicked it from the inside. I heard her shocked gasp, then she knocked the door even more forcefully. “Sam, what’s wrong? Are you hurt? Open the door!” I crossed my arms and asked, “Grace, why are you here instead of your fancy mansion?”“It’s not… Sam, open the door and let’s talk. You don’t want the neighbors to hear us, right?”“Why not? I hope everyone can hear that my wife made her lover our manny and bought him a mansion!”My voice got louder. Her voice

Grace’s face drained of color. Her eyes became listless. Before she could speak up, Eloise broke free and pointed at me as she yelled, “Of course she’s going to divorce you! How dare you set conditions for that?“She’s the one who gave birth to Jack, and she’s the one who earns the money. Why’d she have to give those to you?”At that moment, I felt a little relieved. I felt relieved that Grace had hired Ken instead of letting her parents come stay with us.I could see that the past ten years would have been horrible for me if things had been any other way. However, I wanted to get a divorce, and I was not interested in arguing with them. I grabbed my phone and glanced at the blinking recording pen in my pocket. Then, I looked up and stared at her. “If you really cared about Jack, you wouldn’t have met him only twice in ten years!“Besides, ask your daughter. According to marital law, how’d the assets be distributed?” She spat on the ground with a twisted face. “I don’t c

I stared into her eyes. “Grace, it’s only been an hour since I discovered this. “You’ve lied to me for ten years! You apologize and resolve to break up with him in an instant…“That I’d forgive you, let you cheat on me, and let you have another man’s child? Do you think I’ll allow you to use our home to raise someone else’s baby?”Her face paled as she shook her head. “I don’t think you’re stupid. I just felt sorry for him, so I wanted to make it up to him.”“And you didn’t feel sorry for Jack and me?” “I’m sorry…”“You’re sorry now? When you bought him a mansion, gave him money, and had your parents help raise his child, were you sorry then? What about when you asked me to quit my job, told me to pinch every penny, and then hired him as our manny? Did you feel anything at all back then?”She felt even more guilty as I went on. In the end, she blurted frantically, “But I gave you money! At least I didn’t let Jack and you suffer in poverty all these years!” There was no h
