LOGINSeated in front of Alexander, Gabriella nervously scanned the contract before her with uncertain eyes.
The terms were strict and precise. One year of marriage, public appearances, no emotional attachment, though they were to conduct themselves as a happily married, loving couple when in public. The contract also included a confidentiality clause, prohibiting her from revealing the contents to anyone. After the one year had expired, they would agree to divorce amicably, and she would be paid the sum of 10 million dollars.
Gabriella stared at the sum that was written in the contract with utter disbelief. She never imagined it would be this large.
‘I guess if I’m selling my soul to the devil for a whole year, this should be worth it,’ she thought.
With this money, she would finally pay off all her college debt, never have to worry about rent again, and start a good life for herself. One where she didn’t have to worry about whether she would survive till the end of the month before she got her next paycheck.
Still, somewhere deep within her, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that this could go horribly wrong, and she was getting herself into way more than she knew.
Gabriella looked up from the contract at Alexander. His eyes were fixed on her, patiently waiting, then with trembling hands, she picked up the pen and signed, the scratch of ink echoing in the tense air as she sealed her fate.
“We’ll make this work, Gabriella. It’s a mutually beneficial contract,” Alexander said.
Gabriella handed him the contract without saying a word, and his hand lightly brushed hers as he took it, making her retract her arm quickly as if she’d touched something hot.
Alexander’s eyes flicked to her face suddenly, and she avoided eye contact. He studied her for a moment before focusing on the contract and signing as well.
“Well then, we have a deal.” He said as he put the contract away in his desk.
“You’ll need to pack your things and come live with me. Will two days be enough for you to gather your stuff?”
Gabriella's head snapped up to him, finally meeting his gaze with wide eyes.
“Live with you? The contract didn’t say anything about living with you.” Her heart began to beat even faster.
Alexander laughed in amusement, his eyes crinkled at the corners, and his cheeks formed dimples she never knew he had until now.
“Gabriella, don't married couples live together?” He asked mockingly, a cocky smile settling on his face.
She didn’t like the way he always made her feel like an idiot. She wanted to slap that smug smile off his handsome face.
“We’re not married yet.” She said, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Yes, I know that, but we’re not going to wake up one random day and just get married. No one would believe us, and people will start asking questions.”
As much as she hated to admit it, he was right. Alexander had really thought about everything to the last detail.
“Fine.” She reluctantly agreed.
“Good. So I’ll come pick you up in two days then. Once you’re settled, I’ll fill you in on the ground rules and let you know everything you need for the upcoming gala. Then we’ll need to be familiar with the basics of each other and get our story straight. I’ll also schedule an appointment for you with my stylist soon. You’ll need a complete makeover. Sound good?”
Gabriella’s eyes blinked repeatedly as she struggled to digest everything he had just rambled to her.
“Sounds good,” she finally said, unsure how else to respond.
“Alright. That will be all. You may go.”
Gabriella breathed deeply and got up to leave. Her heart felt heavy as she walked out of his office, and when she shut the door, reality came crashing down on her in sudden waves. A single tear rolled down her cheek, betraying her, and she wiped it off quickly before returning to her desk. There was no going back now.
When Gabriella got home from work, she made herself some ramen noodles and snuggled into her couch with a blanket. Slurping her noodles loudly, she continuously switched from one channel to the next. She couldn’t concentrate on anything as she kept worrying about what was to come. How was she going to live with a stranger in two days, someone she barely knew?
As she changed the channel for the fifth time, a picture of Dennis Raymond appeared on the screen, and she sat up instantly.
“Raymond Enterprises breaks new ground as company’s stocks skyrocket,” Gabriella mumbled the headline.
She watched carefully as the interviewer asked him questions about his company, and he responded effortlessly with a smile each time. She admired his calm demeanor and how he handled the interview with ease and professionalism. He just seemed like somebody she would get along with effortlessly.
‘Why can’t I be forced to marry someone like him?’ Gabriella thought. Instead, she was stuck with grumpy old Alexander.
Her mind went back to the night they met in the club, how he saved her and made sure she was okay. Watching him on the television now, she felt warm inside as the cameras zoomed in on him and he flashed a smile. Gabriella felt a sense of familiarity, the same charming smile she saw that night before he disappeared. It was just a few days ago, yet her life felt so different now.
‘How am I even going to explain this whole marriage thing to Khloe’, she wondered.
She hated keeping this secret and how she already felt like a bad friend. She would have to lie to everybody.
Gabriella let her head fall back on the couch as she stared blankly at the ceiling. In just a few days, she had gone from being unemployed to getting a job to being a pawn in a rich man’s game. A contract marriage, no love, no passion-just business. The thought sent a pang through her chest. What had she gotten herself into?
Suddenly, her phone buzzed, indicating she had just received a message. Unlocking it, she found a text from an unknown number.
“Wifey, take tomorrow off to pack your things and say goodbye to whoever you need to. Remember “confidentiality”- Alexander.”
“Wifey??!!” Gabriella screamed at her phone in horror.
Chapter 18- Under His ControlGabriella’s fingers tightened around the phone as a cold wave of unease washed over her.“I…I’m out,” she stammered.“I know.”She forced herself to respond with a steady voice.“Is something wrong?”There was a brief pause on the other end.“Come home.” The line went dead. It was final. There was no room for argument or explanation. She lowered the phone slowly, her mind spinning.Dennis hadn’t looked away. His eyes remained fixed on her, a faint smile resting on his lips.“That sounded serious,” he said casually, taking a sip of his coffee.Gabriella swallowed. “It’s nothing,” she said quickly. But even to her own ears, it sounded like a lie.Dennis tilted his head slightly.“I’m guessing my brother isn't too happy that you came to meet with me.”She forced a smile, “I didn't exactly let him know when I left the house.”“Really?” he raised a brow. “ Well, you'd better get going then, you don't want to keep your fiancée waiting.”Something about the way
Morning came too quickly, and unfortunately for Gabriella, it was a weekend. She stared at the ceiling, her eyes heavy but wide open. Sleep had come in small fragments, filled with echoes of last night. The dinner, the insults, the argument… and Alexander’s silence. Her chest tightened at the memory. Was he really that cruel to have no sympathy at all after what she faced at the hands of his father? She turned onto her side and buried her face in the pillow, wishing she could bury the bitter feeling that sat in the pit of her stomach as well. She didn’t have to go to the office today, which meant she would be cooped up in the house with Alexander. No distractions, no escape, and she was already dreading it.With a tired sigh, she pushed the covers off and sat up, deciding to get started with her morning routine. One thing she knew was that she wasn't going to be leaving her room today. She didn't want to see him. Not yet.Getting out of bed, Gabriella went to the bathroom and took a
The silence in the car was suffocating. Gabriella sat stiffly in the passenger seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap as the city lights blurred past the window. The tension from the dinner hadn't faded. It followed them, clinging like a second layer.Alexander hadn't said a word since they left the house. His eyes were fixed on the road ahead, and he held the steering wheel with a firm grip, the faint glow from streetlights casting occasional shadows on his face.Gabriella stole a glance at him, but there was no reaction. No explanation, not even an acknowledgement of what had just happened.Nothing.“Well, dinner was a total trainwreck,” she finally said, her voice low.Alexander remained quiet, his eyes still fixed on the road.“Youre not going to say anything? Gabriella frowned. He exhaled slowly, as if calming himself before speaking.“What do you want me to say?”She turned slightly in her seat to face him.“I don't know, maybe something about what happened back there?” she
The deafening silence stretched, feeling the air with thick tension. Gabriella stood frozen, her eyes fixed on Alexander, her chest rising and falling unevenly as she waited painfully. For what? She wasn’t even sure.Mr. Kingston shook his head disapprovingly. “Unbelievable,” he muttered. “You’ve lost focus completely.”Gabriella’s fingers dug into her palms as she forced herself not to react.“Can you believe this?” he said, turning sharply to his wife.Mrs. Kingston shifted uncomfortably in her seat.“Mathew, please…”“No,” he snapped. “This is not how I raised him. He is busy fraternizing with his employee in the middle of a corporate crisis.”Alexander remained seated, his expression unreadable and posture rigid. But Gabriella noticed a slight tightening of his jaw.Dennis’ gaze shifted between Alexander and Gabriella. He exhaled slowly before rising to his feet, clearly tired of watching the situation spiral.“Alright,” he said calmly, “I think you’re being too harsh. If Alexand
Gabriella managed to maintain a straight posture, despite the tension sitting in her chest. She forced herself to breathe evenly and beamed a smile as she stood before Alexander’s family. The air in the grand foyer felt thick with expectation.“Good evening. It’s so nice to meet you.” Gabriella said, trying to sound confident.“Welcome,” Mrs. Kingston said warmly, stepping forward with a graceful smile. Unlike her husband’s rigid posture, there was a softness in her eyes that put Gabriella slightly at ease.“Alexander mentioned he was bringing someone over for dinner, and I just couldn’t wait to meet you. He never brings anyone home.”“Thank you, ma’am. You have a lovely home,” Gabriella replied politely, hoping her nerves weren’t obvious in her voice.Mr Kingston only gave a curt nod, his sharp eyes assessing her from head to toe. She could feel the disapproval in his gaze.Dennis, on the other hand, remained silent, leaning slightly against the wall as if he were simply enjoying the
Gabriella barely slept. Tonight, she would meet the parents of the man she was pretending to be in love with. She knew deep within her that this wasn’t going to be any ordinary dinner. She had dressed carefully, choosing something professional but subtle, not wanting to draw unnecessary attention to herself at the office. But it wasn’t just the office she was worried about. It was the family dinner, the gala, and everything beyond it. They all weighed heavily on her heart. After getting ready for work, she grabbed her things and went downstairs, where she found Alexander already waiting for her.“Good morning,” She said“Morning. Let’s get going,” he responded dryly and walked out of the house. The ride to work was awfully quiet, and Gabriella sat stiffly in the passenger seat as the city rolled past outside. Alexander had given the driver the day off and decided to drive them to work himself. His hands held the steering wheel lazily as he expertly maneuvered through the streets.“What
