Ariel stood outside the gym, her arms were crossed tightly against her chest as if shielding herself from the world. Her clenched jaw told everyone to stay away… unless they were Stacy.

“You're super pissed at me, aren’t you?” Stacy said cautiously as she came out of the gym and walked towards her friend.

Ariel didn't answer immediately. Her quietness showed how she felt more than talking would.

Stacy chewed on her bottom lip. “Look, I didn’t mean to upset you. I thought I was helping.”

Ariel slowly turned her head, eyes narrowed. “Helping, really? By agreeing to a date I didn’t want to go on? You didn't even wait for me to respond.”

Stacy winced. “Okay, I know. I was out of line. I just thought you could have fun. You know, someone to cheer you up and put a smile on that grumpy face of yours. And Ethan’s not exactly a bad option.”

Ariel sighed, rubbing her temple. “Look Stacy, you can’t just decide things for me. I’ve got enough people trying to run my life as it is.” her voice softened slightly, revealing the exhaustion beneath her anger.

Stacy stepped closer. “Look, I didn't mean to pressure you. I’ve noticed you’ve been really withdrawn. You're usually quiet but this is different. And honestly, I thought hanging out with Ethan might cheer you up. That guy is totally into you and always around, trying to get you to look at him. Just one dinner? Can’t hurt you, right?” She offered a smile.

Ariel paused, considering her friend's words. Her heart wanted something else… someone rather, someone riskier and colder that she didn't want to admit. Luther. But she knew that was hopeless. Like walking into a wall of ice over and over.

“Fine,” she muttered. “One dinner. But don’t expect anything more.”

Stacy’s face broke into a triumphant grin, eyes lighting up. “I’m sure you’ll fall in love after one date. It’s Ethan we’re talking about here.” She nudged Ariel playfully with her elbow. “Text me everything afterwards, I want details.”

Ariel rolled her eyes but couldn’t completely suppress the small smile tugging at the corner of her lips. Stacy’s enthusiasm had always been infectious, even when it was misguided.

_____

The following evening, Ariel stood outside a fancy downtown restaurant , staring at the golden words on the shiny glass door. Her reflection stared back… curled hair cascading over her shoulders, a sleek black dress that hugged her figure, a touch of rose gold lip gloss. She felt like she was staring at a stranger.

Couple brushed past her to enter, their laughter igniting a spark of anxiety in her chest. Taking a deep breath, she pushed through the door.

When she stepped in, the smell of roses and old wine was the first thing she noticed. Shimmering chandeliers hung from the high ceilings. Waiters in impeccably tailored suits moved quietly between tables. It was… not a place she was used to. Not a place she belonged.

Her fingers toyed nervously with the small pendant at her throat, a habit from childhood shed never quite outgrown. One of the waiters approached her with a smile, but before he could speak, she potted Ethan.

He stood up and waved from a table by the window. He was wearing a nice navy suit, his sandy blonde hair was carefully styled. His smile was charming, confident in a way that spoke of someone who had never been told he couldn’t have what he wanted.

Ariel made her way to the table, conscious of each step in her rarely worn heels.

“You look... wow,” he said, pulling out her chair.is eyes travelled appreciatively over her dress before meeting her gaze.

“Thanks,” she replied, smoothing her dress as she sat down. “You too.”

He gestured to the menu. “I hope you don’t mind… I already ordered for us.” There was a hint of apology in his voice, but not enough to suggest he thought he might have overstepped.

Ariel blinked. “Oh. Umm, okay.” She tried to keep her voice neutral.

“You’re going to love it,” he promised, leaning forward slightly. “So... how was your day?”

“Busy. You know, classes, assignments... the usual.” She sipped the water.

They talked casually about campus life, basketball, even pineapple on pizza. For a while, it felt simple. Easy and light, like Stacy had described.ethan was charming, his laughter sounded genuine and his interest in her was evident in the way his eyes rarely left her face.

But then Ethan's voice became more serious. “There’s something important I’ve been meaning to ask you.” He said, swirling the wine glass. “It’s about the bar.”

Ariel looked up. “What about it?”

“Don’t you think it’s time to quit? After what happened... you nearly got hurt. That guy could’ve…” his voice trailed off.

“It was a misunderstanding,” she interrupted. “He’s been banned. Management handled it.”

“Still, it’s not worth it. If it’s about money…”he reached across the table as if to take her hand, but she subtly shifted away, pretending to reach for her glass.

“It’s not,” she snapped. Then, softer, meeting his eyes. “I mean, it is, but... I don’t take handouts. I would like to work for what I have or need.”

“I wasn’t trying to offend you,” he said quickly. “Just... if you ever need help, I’m here. No pressure. Just... someone to lean on.”

Ariel looked down at her plate, pushing a perfect scallop around with her fork. “Thank you. That means a lot. But I can’t accept money from you or anyone. I need to stand on my own.”

The rest of the meal went by smoothly. After dinner, when the dessert plates had been cleared and the check discreetly paid… Ethaninsisting despite her protests… he offered to drive her home. She accepted. The car ride was silent but not awkward, it felt more like they were both processing the evening.

When they reached her house, he got out and opened her door.

Inside the building, Ethan came walking quickly, almost jogging to get closer to her. “Hey! Ariel!” he called out. She turned her head and gave him a quick smile. “Hi, Ethan. I'm almost late for my first class. I'll talk to you later, okay?” He blinked his eyes, looking a little surprised. “Oh. Uh, sure. Yeah, see you later.” As she continued walking away, he stood there watching her, looking completely puzzled. This wasn't the Ariel he was used to seeing. She seemed to be smiling more, blushing rather. It gave him a strange, uncomfortable feeling in his chest. ________ When Ariel entered Professor Julia's lecture hall, about half of the seats were already taken, and the time was just five minutes past the hour. “Ms. Anthony,” Professor Julia's voice echoed through the room, sounding harsh and critical. “It seems you are late to my class once again.” Ariel stopped walking for a moment, an apologetic look on her face. “I’m really sorry, Professor. It's only five minutes past th

The first light of the day began to fill the room. Ariel stirred against the pillow, her skin still clammy from the fever that had kept her curled up in bed last night. The small, damp cloth that had been resting on her forehead had become a little dry and slipped down as she slowly opened her eyes. The ceiling fan spun gently above, and for a moment, she forgot where she was… until the scent of coffee drifted into the room, mixed with the sound of someone humming softly. And then it all came back to her. She was in Luther’s apartment. The realization settled slowly, not in a bad way, but it still made her feel a little uneasy. She pushed herself up gently and rubbed her eyes, then frowned. “How did I not notice I had a fever?” she said quietly to herself, her voice sounding rough and scratchy. She gently touched the place on her forehead where the damp cloth had been lying. “Oh, this is just wonderful.” She continued, a hint of frustration in her tone. “Now I’m becoming more of a

As she stepped out into the cool night air, he leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “I’d love to do this again.” he said, hopeful in a way that made her stomach twist from guilt. Ariel hesitated. “Ethan... I appreciate tonight. Really. But I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I’m not looking for anything romantic. I see you as a friend. Just a friend.” The gentleness of her voice did nothing to soften the rejection. His smile faltered but he nodded slowly, disappointment flickering across his features before he masked it with understanding. “Okay. I can do that. Just friends.” She hated the way his eyes dimmed, the slight slump of his shoulders. But she had to make things clear from the start. Leading him on would only cause more pain later. She thanked him again for dinner and watched as he drove away. Before she turned and entered the building. _________ The next day, Ariel sat with Stacy in the cafeteria. Her tray was untouched. “Still thinking about last night?” Stacy te

Later that week, despite the doctor's advice to rest, Ariel found herself sitting in the familiar lecture hall. Despite her excuse of not wanting to miss classes, deep down she knew that the only reason she was here was because she missed Luther. She missed seeing his face and hearing him speak. “Ariel?” Luther called out to her as the class dismissed. “Yes, Professor Grayson,” she replied. “Stay behind. I’d like to speak with you briefly.” He said, flipping through notes. Ariel nodded, sitting back down as everyone else left the hall. “What are you doing here?” Luther asked as soon as the class was empty. “Um, attending class?” Ariel spoke nervously. “You should be resting.” “I already missed three days. That’s enough.” He walked towards her. “Your stitches… your head… what if…” “I’m fine.” She met his gaze. “I’m not made of glass, don’t worry.” He sighed, stretching out his hand to lift her chin. “Are you sure you’re good?” “Yes sir. I’m perfectly fine.” Luther withdre

Ariel’s eyes fluttered open, they felt heavy due to all the painkillers. She winced in pain as she tried to sit up, her head throbbed with every movement, and it took her a full minute to realize where she was. The hospital. Her hand instinctively reached for the bandage wrapped around her head, her finger brushing over the thick gauze. The memory of what happened at the bar surged through her… the drunk customer, Luther’s furious voice, and then… the bottle. She remembered the sharp pain she felt. And then… “Please don’t leave me, Anna.” Anna. The name echoed in her head. Who was Anna? Ariel’s heart raced, not just from confusion, but from the way Luther had said it. Broken. Desperate. Like it came from somewhere deep inside him… a place he’d sealed off from the rest of the world. She wanted to ask him. She needed to. The door creaked open softly, breaking through her chain of thoughts. Luther stepped in, his eyes locked onto her face immediately. For a brief moment, somethi

Later that evening, as Ariel stepped into the bar, the smell of cigarettes and the sounds of laughter filled the air. She took a deep breath, adjusting her black shirt.“Just serve drinks. Be polite. Don’t panic.” She murmured under her breath. The place was busier than she had expected for a weeknight. Every table was occupied… in the far corner, several poker tables were surrounded by serious faced players.“There you are!” Stacy appeared beside her, already dressed in the uniform… black pants and a fitted black button up shirt. “I was worried you might bail.”“I almost did.” Ariel admitted.“Well I’m glad you didn’t.”Stacy said, guiding her toward the bar. “Come on, let me introduce you to Kelvin. He’s the manager.”Kelvin turned out to be a surprisingly cool guy. He gave Ariel a quick rundown of her duties. Nothing she couldn’t handle, she thought with growing confidence.“Stick with Stacy for the first hour,” he advised. “Watch what she does and then you can start taking orders o

A few weeks later, Ariel walked to the lecture hall, her eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on a familiar figure walking ahead of her.“Stacy!” She called, waving. The girl in question grinned, her ginger curls bouncing with each step she took. Stacy was Ariel’s only friend aside from Daniel.“Do you have a minute?” Ariel smiled as she stopped in front of her.“For you? Always.” Stacy replied. “You okay? You look kinda… tense”“I’m fine.” Ariel replied quickly. “I just wanted to ask you something. Do you think you could help me find a part time job?”Stacy blinked, then broke into a mischievous smile. “Oh my goodness, Ariel. Is that why you're so tense?”Ariel nodded. “Kinda. I didn’t know how to ask you about it.”“We're friends, so feel free to ask for my help with anything. I never hesitate to ask you to help me when I need help, do I?”“That’s true,” Ariel admitted with a smile. “You had no problem asking me to proofread your entire sociology per at 3 AM last month.”“Exact

The loud scream that had sent students rushing through the halls belonged to none other than Professor Julia. She was sprawled across the floor, her face twisted in discomfort, she clutched her ankle as whispers of concern spread around her. Some students, and professors rushed forward to help, while others simply stood back, murmuring. “Is she okay?” A freshman girl whispered in concern.“I think she slipped…” another student mumbled, craning his neck to get a better view.“Wasn’t she standing over there a minute ago?”a skeptical voice cut through the crowd, pointing o a spot several feet away from where Professor Julia now lay.Julia didn’t care about the small crowd forming around her. The whole time her eyes were on him.Luther, who stood at a distance, tucked his hands in his pockets, his expression was unreadable. His eyes landed on her briefly, but there was no concern… no reaction at all. He didn’t see the need to go there since she was surrounded by students and professors…
