Ariel’s eyes fluttered open, they felt heavy due to all the painkillers. She winced in pain as she tried to sit up, her head throbbed with every movement, and it took her a full minute to realize where she was.

The hospital.

Her hand instinctively reached for the bandage wrapped around her head, her finger brushing over the thick gauze. The memory of what happened at the bar surged through her… the drunk customer, Luther’s furious voice, and then… the bottle. She remembered the sharp pain she felt. And then…

“Please don’t leave me, Anna.”

Anna.

The name echoed in her head.

Who was Anna?

Ariel’s heart raced, not just from confusion, but from the way Luther had said it. Broken. Desperate. Like it came from somewhere deep inside him… a place he’d sealed off from the rest of the world. She wanted to ask him. She needed to.

The door creaked open softly, breaking through her chain of thoughts.

Luther stepped in, his eyes locked onto her face immediately. For a brief moment, something flashed through his eyes… relief? But it vanished before she could read it.

“You’re awake,” he said softly, walking toward the bed. “How do you feel?”

“Like I got hit by a bottle.” She replied, trying to be funny.

His lips twitched, but the smile never came. He pulled up a chair, sat down and looked at her… really looked. “I’m sorry about what happened.”

She looked at him, biting her lower lip. “You don’t need to apologize. It’s not like you were the one that hit me.”

“But you got hurt because of me.” His voice was low. “Why? Why did you that?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. I panicked when I saw him and… I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

“Ariel, I appreciate that, but please… don’t put yourself in harm's way because of me. I don’t deserve that kind of sacrifice from you.”

She looked at his face. It seemed calm and distant, but his restless fingers showed he was actually nervous.

Without thinking, she reached out and cupped his face in her hands. “Stop being hard on yourself. It’s not your fault.” She tried to assure him. “That drunk customer is to blame here, and I’m sure he’s getting the punishment he deserves.”

His eyes softened momentarily. “You scared me. Don’t ever do that again, okay?”

There was a pause. Ariel almost brought it up… Anna… but something stopped her. Instead, she changed the subject.

“So… when am I getting discharged? I don’t want my mom to worry about me. And I also don’t wanna fall behind on my classes.”

“You’re worried about missing classes?” He blinked, surprised.

“What? I’m worried about failing your class.”

That earned a smirk. “I doubt that’s possible. You’re one of my top students, remember?”

“You’re right, I’m pretty smart, aren’t I?” She said, trying to lighten the mood.

“I asked Stacy to inform your family. I don’t know why no one is here yet.”

“What? No, you shouldn’t have called them. I don’t want my mom to get stressed.”

“You shouldn’t keep something this serious from your family.” Luther caressed her chin. “Ariel, about…”

Before Luther could finish talking, there was a knock, and a familiar voice sounded from the door.

“Hey! Stacy told me what happened. Are you okay?”

Ariel turned to see Ethan strolling in, holding a paper bag and flashing that carefree smile of his.

Luther stood up at once. His entire demeanor changed in a blink.

“Professor Grayson, hi,” Ethan said casually. “Didn’t know you’d be here.”

“I was just waiting for her family to arrive before I left.” Luther muttered, brushing past Ethan without meeting his eyes.

Ariel’s eyes followed him out, she felt sad about him leaving.

Ethan raised an eyebrow as he sat beside her. “Well, that was frosty. What did I do, kick his dog?”

Ariel gave a half hearted smile. “That’s Professor Grayson for you.”

“I mean, sure, he’s intense. But the moment I walked in, it felt like I killed his cat or something.”

Ariel chuckled. “Why did Stacy call you?”

“Actually I called you but she answered. So I asked her why she had your phone, and she told me what happened.”

“Oh.” She muttered. “I don’t remember exchanging numbers with you.”

Ethan scratched the back of his head nervously. “Umm, i… I kinda asked around.”

“I brought food because I figured hospital meals suck.”he said changing the subject. “Soup and bread. Nothing too exciting, but warm.”

“Thanks but I think Professor Grayson got me something.” She pointed to the bag on the table.

“It doesn’t matter, you can have mine later if you want.” He shrugged.

Just then, Daniel walked in.

He stopped in his tracks when he saw Ethan already there. “Ariel, are you good? What the hell happened?” He turned his attention to Ariel, completely ignoring Ethan.

“I’m fine. Is mom with you?” Ariel asked, worried.

“Well lucky for you, Stacy called me.” Daniel replied, staring angrily at her. “Now start explaining. Why did you have to get a job? And that too, at a bar.”

Ariel laughed nervously. “Can we talk about that later?” She said, taking brief glances at Ethan.

Ethan understood that she wasn’t comfortable talking about it while he was still there, so he excused himself.

“It’s really late now. I should head out, see you around, Ariel.”

“Okay. Bye Ethan.” Ariel waved as he left.

“Well?” Daniel said as soon as Ethan left.

Ariel groaned. “Can we skip this for when I get home in the morning? I need my energy for mom’s interrogation.”

“Fine, but only because you’re a patient. You better have an answer when we get home.”

“Yes sir.”

“But seriously, how are you feeling?” Daniel asked, his voice filled with concern.

“I feel like I’m in my bad girl era. You know, like I’m part of a gang, and we ran into another rival gang, got into a fight, and a bottle got smashed on my head in the process.” Ariel had a serious expression on her face as she spoke.

“I see you’ve got jokes, huh? Try saying that to Susan when we get home.”

They both laughed.

“I’m just glad you’re alright.” Daniel grew serious for a moment.

“I’m fine. But I would be better if I had someone to massage my feet. I walked a lot today.” She raised her leg dramatically.

“What if I say no?”

“I guess I'll have to lay here in pain, wondering why no one loves me, and…”

“Okay fine,” Daniel cut her off. “You don’t need to be so dramatic. It doesn’t suit you.”

“Thanks bro.” Ariel’s triumphant smirk made him roll his eyes.

As she stepped out into the cool night air, he leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “I’d love to do this again.” he said, hopeful in a way that made her stomach twist from guilt. Ariel hesitated. “Ethan... I appreciate tonight. Really. But I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I’m not looking for anything romantic. I see you as a friend. Just a friend.” The gentleness of her voice did nothing to soften the rejection. His smile faltered but he nodded slowly, disappointment flickering across his features before he masked it with understanding. “Okay. I can do that. Just friends.” She hated the way his eyes dimmed, the slight slump of his shoulders. But she had to make things clear from the start. Leading him on would only cause more pain later. She thanked him again for dinner and watched as he drove away. Before she turned and entered the building. _________ The next day, Ariel sat with Stacy in the cafeteria. Her tray was untouched. “Still thinking about last night?” Stacy te

Ariel stood outside the gym, her arms were crossed tightly against her chest as if shielding herself from the world. Her clenched jaw told everyone to stay away… unless they were Stacy. “You're super pissed at me, aren’t you?” Stacy said cautiously as she came out of the gym and walked towards her friend. Ariel didn't answer immediately. Her quietness showed how she felt more than talking would. Stacy chewed on her bottom lip. “Look, I didn’t mean to upset you. I thought I was helping.” Ariel slowly turned her head, eyes narrowed. “Helping, really? By agreeing to a date I didn’t want to go on? You didn't even wait for me to respond.” Stacy winced. “Okay, I know. I was out of line. I just thought you could have fun. You know, someone to cheer you up and put a smile on that grumpy face of yours. And Ethan’s not exactly a bad option.” Ariel sighed, rubbing her temple. “Look Stacy, you can’t just decide things for me. I’ve got enough people trying to run my life as it is.” her voice

Later that week, despite the doctor's advice to rest, Ariel found herself sitting in the familiar lecture hall. Despite her excuse of not wanting to miss classes, deep down she knew that the only reason she was here was because she missed Luther. She missed seeing his face and hearing him speak. “Ariel?” Luther called out to her as the class dismissed. “Yes, Professor Grayson,” she replied. “Stay behind. I’d like to speak with you briefly.” He said, flipping through notes. Ariel nodded, sitting back down as everyone else left the hall. “What are you doing here?” Luther asked as soon as the class was empty. “Um, attending class?” Ariel spoke nervously. “You should be resting.” “I already missed three days. That’s enough.” He walked towards her. “Your stitches… your head… what if…” “I’m fine.” She met his gaze. “I’m not made of glass, don’t worry.” He sighed, stretching out his hand to lift her chin. “Are you sure you’re good?” “Yes sir. I’m perfectly fine.” Luther withdre

Later that evening, as Ariel stepped into the bar, the smell of cigarettes and the sounds of laughter filled the air. She took a deep breath, adjusting her black shirt.“Just serve drinks. Be polite. Don’t panic.” She murmured under her breath. The place was busier than she had expected for a weeknight. Every table was occupied… in the far corner, several poker tables were surrounded by serious faced players.“There you are!” Stacy appeared beside her, already dressed in the uniform… black pants and a fitted black button up shirt. “I was worried you might bail.”“I almost did.” Ariel admitted.“Well I’m glad you didn’t.”Stacy said, guiding her toward the bar. “Come on, let me introduce you to Kelvin. He’s the manager.”Kelvin turned out to be a surprisingly cool guy. He gave Ariel a quick rundown of her duties. Nothing she couldn’t handle, she thought with growing confidence.“Stick with Stacy for the first hour,” he advised. “Watch what she does and then you can start taking orders o

A few weeks later, Ariel walked to the lecture hall, her eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on a familiar figure walking ahead of her.“Stacy!” She called, waving. The girl in question grinned, her ginger curls bouncing with each step she took. Stacy was Ariel’s only friend aside from Daniel.“Do you have a minute?” Ariel smiled as she stopped in front of her.“For you? Always.” Stacy replied. “You okay? You look kinda… tense”“I’m fine.” Ariel replied quickly. “I just wanted to ask you something. Do you think you could help me find a part time job?”Stacy blinked, then broke into a mischievous smile. “Oh my goodness, Ariel. Is that why you're so tense?”Ariel nodded. “Kinda. I didn’t know how to ask you about it.”“We're friends, so feel free to ask for my help with anything. I never hesitate to ask you to help me when I need help, do I?”“That’s true,” Ariel admitted with a smile. “You had no problem asking me to proofread your entire sociology per at 3 AM last month.”“Exact

Ariel’s POVThe next morning, I left before the sun could fully rise.Slipping out of Luther’s apartment felt like sneaking away from a crime scene. A violent pounding in my chest echoed the intensity of my panic and regret. I scrambled into my clothes, a desperate, clumsy effort to cover my nakedness. My shoes dangled from my fingers as I tiptoed toward the door, hyper aware of every creak of the floorboards.Don’t wake up. Please don’t wake up.Every step away from his bedroom made my stomach knot tighter. Memories from last night flowed through me like fluid patterns… touches I shouldn’t have wanted, moments I couldn’t take back. The way his hands had traced my skin, the tension of his gaze.I shouldn’t have stayed the night. The moment I stepped out, reality crashed down on me. My body ached in places that I wasn’t ready to acknowledge. I didn’t need a mirror to know I looked like a mess… makeup all over my face, hair tangled up, my dress looking like I'd slept in it for days.Wha
