RIVER

“I hired a makeup artist,” Ashley announced at the table during dinner. I looked up at her to realise I wasn't the only one wondering why.

“I won’t look shabby at my ex’s wedding; he needs to know he is the one who lost.”

I was curious; what was the story behind them? Why was Ashley so comfortable with talking about him like it was something that didn't affect her in any way? Was she overcompensating to show he lost while she was grieving?

Taylor and Talia passed concerned looks to each other, like they were trying to figure out who was going to break the ice and say something to make it better. Taylor cleared his throat and shifted.

“You three look like you are about to pity me,” she said before Taylor could say anything.

“Of course not,” both of them said almost too quickly, their voices high-pitched and guilt written all over their faces.

“Then stop looking like that. Marriage is a beautiful thing, and not all beautiful things last forever. If your father has decided tha

TAYLOR. “And can I ask why you have to crash here this weekend?” Hendrix asked with a frown on his face. His house had been chosen because he had a spare room, and I didn't want to go home. My mom was going to hound me about River, and I was not sure if I was ready to face that yet, not with the tension of River’s father accepting me as a suitable boy to date his daughter. “I have told you this a million times.” “And I keep asking because it makes no sense,” Hendrix replied. “You both are adults who can do whatever you want with your life and free time.” “Yes, but she is a good girl.” “Which is weird even for you. Bad boy Tyalor reverts and becomes a good boy to please his new girlfriend, River Wilson.” Hendrix had put two and two together and figured out that we were together. I made him promise not to blurt that out, not until River was ready for the act to be out of the bag. He rolled his eyes and murmured. “Everything with you guys these days is complicated.” “Whatever.” I

RIVERThanksgiving had always been my favourite time of the year until this year, when it turned into the most terrifying moment I had ever experienced. Keeping a secret from my father while Aunt G sat there with a smirk on her face, waiting to see how this was going to unfold, was my undoing. I had spent the entire day sorting dinner out while my father was out visiting a few friends he had never mentioned. “Your father is out now, which means that Taylor can come and say hello to me.” “Not a chance,” I shot down her idea without a second thought. She stared at me like I was the one who was not letting her live out her fantasy to the fullest. “Dad could walk in here any moment from now. “I can’t risk it.” I shook my head as I stirred the gravy over the stovetop. “Oh goodness, River! You have to live a little.” “I can’t risk anything going wrong with the dinner,” I sighed as I dropped the spoon, turning to her. “If all goes well with Dad tonight, then assuredly you’d be meeting

  • My Roommate is a Boy   THE GREAT PURGE

RIVERTaylor made breakfast and cleaned the kitchen before he walked. The house without Taylor felt strange. Every trace of him was wiped too cleanly; it almost made me feel like he was never going to be back. “I will be back, I promise.” I knew he had to come back to his room after all, but still, I needed that assurance from him, so I stopped fidgeting. “Aunt G! “Dad!” I say as I see their car pull up in front of the house. She had sent me a message saying they were around the corner, and I stepped out to see them. I couldn't just sit around and wait at that point. “You are out here, kiddo.” My father’s arm wrapped around me, gently pulling me into a hug. He was not a big hugger but it felt good to be hugging him like this. “I was eager to see you, so I was waiting.” I push out the half-lie and chuckle nervously. “Great!” he said, pulling his bag towards the stairs to the house. “You got a good house,” he said with a smile, and I nodded. “Is your roommate already gone?” he pu

RIVER My father and Aunt G were supposed to come in tomorrow night, which meant that this was the last night I would spend with Taylor before I had to face my father and his judgement. I was not sure if I could do it, but Taylor had been reassuring me. I should feel better hearing him tell me how much I got this, but the pressure was getting worse. I wanted to snap. My back tensed as soon as my phone began ringing. I already knew who it was without having to check. My father had been doing these intense check-ins lately, as if he knew something was wrong and was trying to pin it down. I could almost predict when he would call. “It’s my dad,” I murmured gently. “Are you going to get it?” Tyalor nudged my side gently. “Honestly, I don’t think I want to,” my voice came out in a whisper as I looked to him. “He’s going to worry.” “I will miss it just this once,” I said, swallowing. “Just this once.” “Come on, don’t be scared.” “Why not?” He is constantly calling to check in too f

RIVER“You know stabbing the dough like that isn’t going to make it any better.” I raise a glare to Taylor, who is standing beside me, an apron lazily tied around his shirtless waist and a stupid smirk. I shouldn't be worried about it, except that it was worrying me even more. “I know,” I said, pounding into the dough aggressively. “You are nervous.” He pulled my hand and turned me to him. His eyes peered into mine, searching as if that was going to let him find anything. I shook my head and avoided his gaze. “I am not nervous.” “You are,” he repeated. “And so what if I am?” I snapped and then realised what I had done. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “I am sorry Tay…” “It’s okay.” His hands slipped up and held my upper arm. “I’ll gladly take all your outbursts if it means I get to see you smile with your father.” “Ughh! Why am I so nervous? Why did I suggest cooking an entire Thanksgiving dinner for three people?” I asked with another sigh. “I mean, if you want, I c

  • My Roommate is a Boy    COOKING LESSONS

RIVER“Shush!” I hushed Taylor as I picked up my phone, which was ringing. I sat in bed, and he held onto my waist as if he was afraid that I'd let go. “River?” “Hi, Lana.” My heart was in my mouth. This was more nerve-wracking than lying to my friends. It's been two weeks, and all I have done during this time is cook up lies on reasons why I couldn't spend the weekend with them, and while they always understood, I knew that they were catching up soon. “We want to try a new black-tie restaurant in town, and we were wondering if you’d like to come,” she said. “Oh…erm…I…I” “I know it’s last-minute, but Elise and Hendrix secured it, and we all thought it would be fun to go together.” “Together? What does that mean?” I asked, nervousness creeping on my insides. “We were hoping you’d ask Taylor…” “Taylor?” I shrieked, alerting him. Our eyes met, and he wiggled his eyebrow, almost making me laugh as he pressed his lips into the side of my arm. “Yeah, Taylor, your roommate. We thou
