Chapter 1

Bang, bang, bang!

A heavy baseball bat slammed into the car window. Cracks spread across the glass like a spiderweb.

The impact had killed the engine. I was trapped between the seat and the airbag, blood trickling down my temple.

Shaking, I fumbled for my phone and called home.

Someone picked up right away.

"I'm at the abandoned rest stop. Someone's attacking me. Help!"

I was sobbing, begging for help.

Instead, Ethan snapped at me, "Nina, stop acting like a spoiled brat! You're a Mercer. Start acting like one! Quit lying and finish your task!"

The line went dead. For a moment, I just froze.

In a panic, I called 911.

"Help—"

I didn't even get to finish.

Bang!

The rear side window exploded.

Cold wind whipped across my face, carrying bits of broken glass with it.

I screamed in terror.

Several burly men reached into the car, grabbed me, and tried to drag me out.

Just as I was losing all hope, a pair of headlights cut through the darkness.

A tall figure stepped out of the car.

It was too dark to make out his face.

All I saw was him raising a hand.

Bodyguards dressed in black emerged from the shadows and subdued the attackers within seconds.

The man leaned into the car and spoke in a deep, reassuring voice. "Don't be scared. I'm here."

His face hardened with fury when he saw the blood on mine.

"Teach them a lesson. Keep them alive. I want answers."

But with me, he was incredibly gentle.

He carefully lifted me out of the car, took off his coat, and wrapped it around my shivering body.

Terror and sudden relief hit me all at once, making my head spin.

Everything went black.

...

In a haze, my mind drifted back to three years earlier.

My family, the Mercers, was one of the most prominent families in the city.

They brought me home after I'd spent 18 years in an orphanage.

Back then, I thought I finally had a family.

But the night before my homecoming party, Wendy and I chose the same couture gown.

My fingertips had barely touched the skirt, and I hadn't said a word yet.

My mother had already snatched it away and handed it to Wendy.

"If Wendy likes it, she should have it."

I looked at her and said softly, "Mom, I saw it first."

My mother's expression hardened. "It's just a dress. Why make such a big deal out of it? You're the older sister. Can't you just let Wendy have it?"

Ethan sided with her. "Nina, stop being so selfish."

I just stood there, embarrassed and hurt.

After the party, my parents said they'd give me a gift to make up for it.

I was excited to see what it was.

Instead, they gave me one of Wendy's old handbags.

I held up the worn-out bag.

"Was this Wendy's?"

My mother didn't even blink.

"None of the new ones at home suit you. Just use the old one."

Wendy stood off to the side, unable to hide how smug she was.

"Don't be so picky, Nina. I used to love this bag. I thought it'd be perfect for you."

From that day on, almost everything they gave me was a hand-me-down from Wendy.

Old dresses, accessories, even everyday items. They were expensive and still looked as good as new, but just like them, my heart was worn in ways no one could see.

Then, late one night, I happened to overhear my parents talking inside the study.

"If it weren't for that will and the company shares, we never would have brought her home."

"Exactly. A daughter who was gone for 18 years is no different from a stranger."

"When it comes down to it, Wendy's the only daughter we really think of as ours."

I froze. Their words sent a chill straight through me.

So that was all I was to them—an outsider they could use.

A month later, the court handed down the final verdict.Wendy was sentenced to twelve years in prison for attempted murder and assault.Ethan got eight years for covering up the crime, conspiring in the murder-for-hire plot, and forging business contracts. All of Mr. Mercer's assets were frozen and seized over large-scale business fraud and serious tax evasion, and he faced up to ten years behind bars. The Mercer estate was sold at a court-ordered auction, and every cent went back into the trust fund in my name.On the day the verdict came down, Mrs. Mercer stood outside the prison gates in a shabby black dress, her eyes empty.Once the wife of a wealthy businessman, she now had to live off handouts from distant relatives. She cried hysterically, trying to see Ethan and Wendy, but the guards chased her off without a shred of pity.Outside the towering iron gates of the jail, I rolled down my car window.Through the pouring rain, Mrs. Mercer recognized me right away. She rushed over, fe

The Mercer Group collapsed even faster than anyone expected. The company's stock hit rock bottom, the banks called in their loans, and its business partners tore up their contracts. In the drawing room of the Sterling estate, a lawyer slid a document across the table to me."Ms. Mercer, the court has just issued an order to freeze and recover the assets. The Mercer family illegally used more than 30 million dollars from the trust fund. Those funds have all been frozen and will be returned to you."I opened the file.It listed everything my grandfather had left me: property, shares, the trust fund. All of it had been mine from the start. For three years, they'd latched on to me like leeches. Now they would have to cough up every last cent."And one more thing."The lawyer took out a second document."Mr. Mercer has been arrested for business fraud and tax evasion. Mrs. Mercer tried to visit Ethan and Wendy in jail this morning, but she was turned away."There was a commotion outside.A

Early the next morning, reporters crowded outside the Sterling Group building.I watched Mrs. Mercer crying in front of the cameras."We brought Nina home, but she stole Wendy's place as Adrian's fiancée, and then had Wendy thrown in jail just to get her hands on the inheritance."Ethan stood next to her, speaking angrily into the cameras. "Nina is selfish. She faked every video from that party. She was willing to destroy her own family just to marry into money!"When he saw me walking over, Ethan charged at me, jabbing a finger in my face and yelling, "Nina! You ruined Wendy. You're vicious! You're a disgrace to the family!"He blocked the cameras and leaned in close to my ear to threaten me. "Sign a statement forgiving Wendy right now, and give up the trust fund! Otherwise, by the end of today, the whole world will know you're the shameless liar who framed your own family!"I looked at him and gave a cold laugh."Ethan, did you forget what you said to me on the phone that night?"I r

The uproar in the ballroom faded along with the sirens. After we left the party, Adrian took me back to the Sterling estate. He held my hand as he led me to the study on the third floor of the main house."Sit."Adrian took off his suit jacket. His fitted black shirt showed off his broad shoulders and the contours of his chest.I sat on the couch, still wrapped in his coat, surrounded by his comforting scent.I couldn't help thinking back to the pitch-black rest stop the night before, and how he'd appeared when I'd needed him most and pulled me out of that nightmare.Later that night at the private hospital, he'd wiped the dirt off my hands with warm water, as carefully as if he were handling something priceless. When I woke up from a nightmare, he was right by my bed to comfort me. "Don't be afraid. I'm here. No one will ever hurt you again."My heart raced uncontrollably at the memory."Still thinking about what happened back there?"Adrian poured me a glass of ice water and handed i

A phone recording played from the tablet, every word clear.Wendy's voice came through, colder than anyone had ever heard it. "Get a few guys to stop her at the rest stop tonight. Strip her, take pictures and post them online, then kill her."Right after that, the screen showed high-definition security footage. In a private club, Wendy was handing a bag of cash to a gang member. Then came the full chat history."Oh my God... she actually hired someone to kill her own sister!""She acts like a lady, but who knew she could be so vicious?""That's a felony!"The guests around her stepped back in horror. The same people who'd been fawning over Wendy a minute ago now looked at her with contempt and disgust.Wendy was shaking all over, deathly pale. She collapsed to the floor, screaming in despair. "No! It's not true! Someone's framing me! Mr. Sterling, let me explain...""Framing you?"I gave a cold laugh."Wendy, you set up the game of drawing lots that sent me to the abandoned rest stop,

I shook my head, my eyes stinging."Who are you?! How dare you barge into this party!" Mr. Mercer shouted angrily. But when he got a good look at the man's face, the words caught in his throat. His anger gave way to panic."M... Mr. Sterling?!"The whole room fell silent. The man standing before us was Adrian, whose power and influence in the city were unmatched.Adrian turned and pulled me tight against him.He held me steady against his warm chest, making me feel safe and protected. My heart started racing. It was the second time he'd protected me like this.Mr. Mercer couldn't hold back."Mr. Sterling... what is your relationship with Nina?"Mrs. Mercer hurried forward too, all smiles and flattery."Mr. Sterling, if Nina has offended you in any way, I'll make sure she learns her lesson!"Adrian looked down at me, and his grip on my waist tightened."No. She's done nothing wrong."Nina Mercer is my fiancée.""Fiancée?!" Mrs. Mercer shrieked, and the glass in her hand fell and shatter
