Chapter 2

Autor: Aurelia
After a sleepless night, I forced myself to go to Moonlight Square.

It was where Sterling and I had sealed our mate bond seven years ago.

Through the bustling crowd, I spotted Sterling and Vesper laughing together.

When Vesper saw me coming, her face stiffened. Sterling frowned and looked me over.

"You still haven't recovered your mental energy? You're so pale. Maybe we should wait another week..."

I shook my head and walked straight to Hester Blackwood, the former Luna. Her face was stern.

"Are you sure about this, Livia?

"Breaking a mate bond takes a heavy toll on your mental energy. I wouldn't recommend..."

I smiled and nodded, but tears welled in my eyes.

She was the strict teacher I respected most. She was also Sterling's mother, and she loved him more than anyone.

She'd known for a while that Sterling had fallen for someone else, and she'd helped him keep it from me.

Under the crowd's conflicted gazes, Sterling and I stood at the center of the platform.

The sun overhead was dazzling. It reminded me of the day we'd stood in this same spot and made our vows.

We were young back then and on top of the world.

Sterling was the strongest Alpha our pack had ever seen, and everyone had adored him since he was a kid.

And I was the only one our age who could hold my own against him in a fight.

When the Moon Goddess told him we were fated mates, Sterling's joy had been impossible to miss.

He'd spent three days and nights searching for golden flowers to make me a bouquet. When he handed it to me, he was grinning.

"This is amazing, Livia! We're going to be the strongest, most perfectly matched mates ever!"

But now, when our eyes met, his were flat. All that fierce love was gone.

"Before the Moon Goddess, I, Sterling Blackwood, reject Livia Rowe of the Greatwolf Pack as my mate."

As he spoke the words, I looked down at my wrist.

The mate mark was almost invisible.

A month ago, the mark on Vesper's wrist had looked exactly the same.

Right after her bond was broken, she'd smiled and told me not to worry about her.

My wolf had unusually sharp hearing, so I often heard her crying in her room.

So before I left for the retreat, I asked Sterling to look out for her while I was gone.

It was the first time I'd ever asked Sterling for help.

I never imagined it would also be the last.

When I snapped out of my thoughts, Hester was watching me with concern.

I smiled, and when I spoke, my voice came out steady.

"I, Livia Rowe of the Greatwolf Pack, accept your rejection."

In that instant, something exploded inside my head with a roar.

When the bond snapped, all the damage from years of overusing my mental energy hit at once.

Everything went black, and I passed out.

When I woke up, I was propped against the steps below the platform.

Vesper was about to feed me a recovery potion.

She'd made every one of those potions especially for me.

Our parents died on a hunt 15 years ago.

At just ten years old, I began pushing myself and my wolf to our limits, determined to grow stronger so I could protect Vesper.

Vesper's wolf was weak, so she couldn't hunt.

But she taught herself to make potions from the old healers' notebooks so she could have my back.

After every hunt, no matter how badly I was hurt, I held on until I'd brought the kill home to Vesper.

Vesper would cry as she dragged me to bed and fed me whatever tonics she'd mixed herself.

Just like now.

I turned my head away from the potion.

From then on, I would never need any of her potions again.

Pain filled Vesper's eyes as she begged me.

"Livia, please don't do this to me. I didn't set out to seduce Sterling.

"The first time I went out gathering, I got lost. Sterling was poisoned while saving me, and his wolf went berserk.

"I couldn't just watch him die in front of me. Wolves should know how to repay a kindness, Livia. You taught me that..."

I looked her straight in the eye and spoke softly.

"Vesper, I saw it last night. There was a universal antidote in the box you brought me. It could have stopped his wolf from going berserk."

Her lashes trembled, and she was quiet for a long time.

When she looked up again, there was something in her eyes I couldn't read.

"Livia, you asked me before what would make me happy. I want Sterling...

"He's all I want, even if it means you'll never want me again."

The moment she said it, something in my chest shuddered.

I looked over at Sterling, who'd heard every word.

His eyes were on Vesper, focused and tender.

When he saw me looking, he stepped forward, took Vesper's hand, and said earnestly.

"Livia, stop giving Vesper a hard time. I'm the one who chose her.

"For you, fighting and training always came before me. I was just a small part of your life..."

He and Vesper shared a smile, and he went on.

"But to Vesper, I'm her whole world.

"I love her."

I looked down at my wrist.

There was nothing there anymore.

When I looked up, Vesper was still staring at me with stubborn resolve.

I let out a quiet laugh.

Even mates chosen by the Moon Goddess can still break their bond.

Vesper, how can you still believe in a man's love?

Inside me, my wolf lay limp and listless.

I gave a small smile and offered my sister the blessing she'd been waiting for.

"Fine. Go ahead and bond with each other.

"I hope you'll be happy together."

The war was finally over.I finished the mission and went back to the Tidewolf Pack. The night I got back, the pack threw its usual victory feast.Caspian gave a speech from the stage."Let's give everyone a big round of applause for making it home safely!"He raised his glass to me."And let's celebrate our Livia! Five years, a perfect mission record, and not a single casualty!"Everyone laughed and cheered in my direction.Only this time, I didn't stay quiet. I walked up to the front, pressed my lips together, and spoke."This is all thanks to my squad's hard work. Every member of Tidewolf First Squad shares this honor!"And thank you all for trusting me and risking your lives beside me."I can never repay you, but I'll personally double everyone's pay for this mission!"The room erupted in howling cheers. When I turned around, Caspian was watching me closely, his silver eyes full of amusement. For once, I teased him."Why so happy? Got some good news?"He took a sip of red wine and

Following orders, I stayed with the Greatwolf Pack for a month to rest and stand by.That whole time, Sterling did everything he could to win me over.Every morning when I opened my door, there was a huge bouquet of golden flowers lying outside. At every meal, I was the only one served dishes specially prepared for me in a private kitchen. While I worked, Sterling found every excuse to ask me questions and chat.It drove me up the wall. No matter how many times I rejected him in front of everyone, he wouldn't stop. When the month was finally over, I got ready to take my squad home. Then new orders came in, telling me to stand by and cooperate fully with Sterling.I frowned and was about to write back to ask what was going on. Then Sterling showed up and told me himself."I requested assistance from the Tidewolf Pack as an ally."My head snapped up.The Tidewolf Pack only provided this kind of assistance to its subordinate packs.I hadn't seen him in three days. He had darker circles un

Back at our quarters, my squad kept looking at me like they wanted to say something but didn't dare.I frowned and asked what was going on. They slipped a big box of potions into my hands. Each bottle bore that familiar little moon on its label.I understood and headed for the woman waiting in the reception room.My squad whispered behind me."These potions are seriously good. They're as good as our pack's top-grade stuff, and I heard she taught herself to make all of them...""Wow, that's our captain for you. She's a genius, and her sister's a genius too.""Now I get why Alpha's so eager to recruit her. It'd be a shame to let a genius like that slip away!"I closed the door softly behind me and looked at Vesper. She was even thinner, and so pale she looked like a breeze could blow her away."Livia..."She looked at me, close to tears.I sat across from her and let her talk. She was in bad shape, like she was barely holding herself together. She told me that her days followed a steady

After we'd rested up, I held a meeting with my squad and then gave everyone some free time.I had some personal business to take care of.Five years had gone by, and my parents' house looked exactly the way it had when I left.Sunlight fell on the vines by the window, and beside a flowerpot lay a book I'd never finished.I stood in the middle of the house, feeling a little lost.Hardly anything in the house belonged to me.Maybe the only things that were truly mine were the 12 or so notebooks in the bedroom. They were full of notes on past fights that only I could make sense of.I looked into the full-length mirror by the front door.In the mirror, I was tanner and stronger than I had been five years ago. My face looked calmer, and the ambition in my eyes was buried deeper.Honestly, the Tidewolf training center felt more like home than this house did.I had my own room there, a dining hall that made special meals for me, and teammates who trained with me and looked out for one another

I escorted them, along with the convoy, to Moonlight Square. On the way, Hester talked and talked."I'm sorry, Livia. I shouldn't have covered for them."Five years ago, during my retreat, I'd gotten only one letter from my sister the whole time, and it had worried me sick.I'd gone to Hester and asked to end the retreat early. But she just kept reassuring me that everything was fine at home and told me to focus on my training. To get home sooner, I trained day and night until I ran myself into the ground.Hester looked at me, full of guilt."I'm sorry, Livia. I know there's nothing you hate more than secrets and betrayal."But I honestly didn't know how to tell you something that cruel..."Proud and stubborn as you are, I knew you'd leave once you found out. I didn't want you to leave the pack..."Behind her, the Greatwolves who'd just regained consciousness forced themselves up to thank me and apologize."Livia, I'm sorry. At the bond-breaking ceremony five years ago, I shouldn't hav

Five years passed before I set foot on Greatwolf land again. When I saw the border outpost in the distance, familiar yet strange, my legs tensed on their own. After five years of recovery, the feeling had come back to my legs, and I could run and jump like anyone else. But whenever I pushed them hard, sharp pain still stabbed through my bones.Back when I'd lost all hope, I clung to the Tidewolf Pack's invitation as my last lifeline. As the strongest pack on the continent, the Tidewolves had formidable fighters and the most advanced healing arts.During my training retreats with them, Caspian Thorne, the Tidewolf Alpha, would always sigh after every sparring match."Livia, darling, are you sure you won't think about joining the Tidewolf Pack?"Skills as sharp as yours deserve a bigger stage. Somewhere like the Tidewolf Pack, for instance."Staying in a weak little pack like that is a total waste of talent!"I always turned Caspian down with a polite smile."The Greatwolf Pack isn't wea
