Chapter 4

Author: Poise
"Nicolette, I never imagined you could be this vicious. You can't have me, so now you want to destroy Noelle and me too? I won't let you get away with it."

"Nicolette, you're the one who pushed us to do this."

I frowned at the texts, having no idea what game the two of them were playing—until early the next morning, when Noelle updated her social media.

It was a photo. There I was, standing in the doorway of an airport lounge. The door was wide open, and inside, Jeremy and Noelle were half-undressed.

Her caption read, "For years, I've lived in my sister's shadow. She forced me to live out her dreams and become whatever she wanted me to be. The only choice I ever made for myself was marrying the man I love, but she couldn't accept it.

"She's been stalking me and threatening to destroy me. All I ever wanted was to live a normal life. Why is that so hard?"

Jeremy followed right behind her with a long post of his own.

"I never wanted to make things between Nico and me public, but now that an innocent person has been dragged into this, I have to set the record straight. She and I split amicably six months ago. She's the one who refused to let go, using Noelle's career to threaten me, trying to force me to leave Noelle and take her back.

"Nico, Noelle is your own sister. I'm begging you. Let her go. And let me go, too."

At the bottom of his post, he attached a screenshot of a chat history.

I tapped on it. They were messages supposedly from me to Noelle.

"If you dare steal him from me, I'll make sure you never walk a runway again for the rest of your life.

"Since I'm the one who got you to where you are today, I can destroy you just as easily."

In fact, those messages weren't from me. I had never said anything like that to Noelle.

Yet the contact name in the screenshot was mine, and the profile picture matched mine perfectly.

It was an obvious fabrication, but not a single person was willing to believe me.

The comment section changed its tune in an instant. The internet mob that had just been bashing Noelle turned on me, their insults growing even more vicious.

As I scrolled through the toxic comments, I suddenly laughed out loud.

I had hired the best instructors for Noelle and lined up the finest resources for her.

I had handpicked every single outfit she wore on the runway.

When her legs shook with nerves before a show, I was the one kneeling on the floor, massaging them.

I had postponed my own wedding for her, again and again, for five whole years.

But she was telling the world she had spent all those years living in my shadow.

As for Jeremy, it was true I had neglected him quite a bit over the past five years. But his company would never have gotten where it was without me going drinking with clients night after night, toast after toast, until my stomach got so bad that even my doctors shook their heads.

I turned off my phone, sat on the couch, and stared out the window.

I gave Jeremy ten years of devotion, and 20 for Noelle. How utterly ridiculous.

After a long moment, I finally made up my mind and dialed my lawyer.

"Draft two statements for me. First, I'm suing Noelle and Jeremy for defamation. Second, I'm terminating all management agreements with Noelle and pulling all her resources. From now on, she's on her own."

After hanging up, I kept scrolling. Eight of the top ten trending topics were attacks on me.

#ControlFreakSisterGaslightsHerSibling

#TwistedPossessiveStreak

Every hashtag I tapped into had tens of thousands of comments, and every single one of them told me to drop dead.

Some users had even doxxed me, dragging my personal information out into the open.

My mind drifted back ten years, to when Noelle was 16. It was the first time she had ever walked a runway, at a school fashion show, and her legs shook so hard she could barely stay on her feet.

I cheered like a maniac from the audience, clapping until my palms burned.

When she came offstage, she threw herself into my arms and whispered, "Nico, I'm scared."

"Don't be," I reassured her. "I've got your back. Just keep moving forward."

The day after the wedding, my phone blew up. Friends back home sent me a flood of screenshots. Noelle had posted a long statement on her social media, confessing to everything—forging the chat logs, faking the medical records, and seducing her own sister's fiance. She wrote, "My sister was too good to me. So good that I couldn't stand the thought of her marrying someone else. She could only ever belong to me. That's why I decided to take her man from her. That way, I would be the only one she ever cared about."At the very end of the post, she added, "I'm sorry, Nicolette. I hope you'll be happy."I read it three times, then forwarded the screenshots to Stephane. He was in the kitchen brewing coffee. He leaned out and glanced at my phone. "What are you going to reply?""Nothing.""That's the right call," he said, bringing the coffee over. "What she owes you can't be paid back with a simple apology."I took the cup and sipped. It was bitter.Outside the window, day was breakin

  • My Sister Stole My Wedding and My Life   Chapter 9

Stephane and I set our wedding for early October at an old castle on the outskirts of Palai. It wasn't a grand, sprawling fortress, but it was beautifully ancient. Thick vines crawled up the weathered stone walls, and the courtyard overflowed with white hydrangeas.Stephane's family filled the space with warmth. His father had traveled all the way from Lior just to cook an authentic hometown dish in the castle kitchen.Meanwhile, his mother held my hand and talked endlessly. She playfully warned me that Stephane had never known how to charm a girl, even as a child, so I would just have to be patient with him.Sophie was my maid of honor."You're the coolest bride I've ever seen," she said. "After getting betrayed by a scumbag, you ran off to Palai, built a career, and picked up a Palaian husband along the way."I chuckled. "He's mixed, actually. Half Amritsan.""Even better! Then you two never have to fight over whose family to spend the holidays with."The whole room laughed.

  • My Sister Stole My Wedding and My Life   Chapter 8

Stephane offered only a few brief words of comfort, but they were enough to make my eyes prickle with tears. As we spent more time together, Stephane made an effort to remember my preferences and made space for my moods. He watched the sun rise and set over Palai with me. And when my spirits dipped now and then, he simply stayed close—quiet, gentle, and healing.Three months later, I moved into Stephane's apartment in Palai's 15th Arrondissement. It wasn't large, but it had a wide balcony with a view of the Aurelle Tower in the distance. He had filled that balcony with roses and lavender, and every morning he'd cut a single stem and leave it on my pillow.During that time, Jeremy texted me every single day.He cycled through numbers—sometimes a local Palai number, sometimes one from back home, sometimes adding me from a throwaway account on social media.I'd block one, and he'd surface with another. The messages went from apologies to begging, from begging to hysterics, and fi

I let three seconds of silence hang on the line before hanging up.It wasn't that I had gone soft. I just found Jeremy's words laughable. The wedding dress I had chosen so carefully, the wedding I had planned down to the smallest detail—he had handed all of it to Noelle.Even the house we had bought together to start our married life ended up being someone else's home—not mine.He had married my younger sister. And now he was telling me I was the one he had loved all along.Did he really think so little of me? That one small show of remorse would be enough to make me come crawling back? That evening, Sophie dragged me out to a fashion party. It was held at a gallery overlooking the river, and I didn't recognize most of the guests. I stood in a corner nursing a glass of champagne, watching all those polished, glamorous Palaians laugh and talk over one another in rapid Parrisene. That was when I saw him.He was standing at the far end of the gallery in a cream linen suit, leanin

It was drizzling the day I landed in Palai. Over the loudspeakers at Lumiere International Airport, a voice droned flight information in Palaine.I wheeled my suitcase out into the gray with no hotel booked and no idea where I was headed. For the first time in ten years, I had no one's schedule to manage but my own.My phone buzzed twice in my pocket. It was Jeremy.I declined the call without hesitation. He called again immediately, and I declined again. Then Noelle's name flashed across the screen. I didn't bother answering her either.Exasperated, I blocked them both. But the phone rang anyway.I pulled it out to check. It was an unknown number. This time, I answered."Is this Ms. Lynch? My name is Sophie Anderson, the editorial director of Palai Fashion. I saw the evidence you posted online—""I'm not doing interviews," I cut her off."No, you misunderstand. I'm calling to ask if you'd be willing to come work in Palai."Her words caught me off guard.Sophie told me she

  • My Sister Stole My Wedding and My Life   Chapter 5

But what did I get in return for all my devotion to Noelle? She turned my fiance into her husband. She reframed ten years of my devotion as a "shadow". She forged chat logs to make me look like a lunatic.Well played.I opened a hidden folder on my laptop. Inside were Noelle's medical records from the past three years, her psychotherapy logs, and photos of the original documents proving she had once forged a medical certificate. There had been a show she didn't feel like doing, so she faked a diagnosis of depression to get out of it.The signature and stamp on that certificate belonged to a contact of mine—a department head who had written it as a personal favor to me.Yet she had taken that fake certificate to Jeremy, crying that the pressure of work had pushed her into a depression.Jeremy swallowed it whole, utterly beside himself with worry. That very night, he turned to me and said, "Nico, stop pushing Noelle so hard. Her health can't take it."Looking back, they were alr
