Chapter 3

But before I could finish, Darius suddenly leaned in and wrapped his arm around my waist.

"By the way, where did you put that protective amulet you acquired for Theo? Is it in the study? Milo has weaker magic, so he needs it more. I am going to let him wear it for a few days."

Without giving me any chance to refuse, Darius barged straight into the study, grabbed the amulet, and rushed out without looking back.

The heavy bronze doors slammed shut.

Darius was gone.

I stared at the doors for a long time.

Then I softly finished the sentence that had been interrupted earlier. "Actually... Theo and I haven't needed you in our lives for a long time."

There were less than two days left until the bond completely shattered.

By midnight, after sealing all the enchanted bags, I collapsed onto the bed in exhaustion.

The messaging crystal lit up. It was a message from Darius.

Milo absolutely loves the amulet. Cassia asked me to express her gratitude on her behalf.

It was the dead of night, and my partner was actually thanking me on behalf of another goddess.

A bitter smile formed on my lips. I could not even bring myself to be angry. Perhaps because I had stopped expecting anything long ago, that familiar stinging pain was gone.

I replied, No need to thank me. I didn't pray for it for her sake anyway.

That amulet is Theo's most precious charm. He cannot sleep soundly without it.

After sending the message, I walked into Theo's small bedroom. His brows were furrowed in pain in his sleep. He was sleeping terribly.

I rested my head beside him and slowly drifted off to sleep.

As for what Darius would think when he saw the message, I didn't care at all.

The next morning, in a rare move, Darius returned to the estate bright and early.

He walked in, took off his cloak, and froze when he saw the row of packed bags in the living room.

"You are just going to tour other realms. Do you really need to pack so much?"

He strode into the bedroom without even setting his cloak down. There was a hint of panic in his voice.

I was wholly focused on helping Theo put on his brand new winged boots, and didn't even turn my head.

"We are going somewhere very far away."

He immediately looked at Theo. Theo gave him a firm nod. Only then did Darius's expression relax.

He draped his cloak over a chair and pulled out three enchanted passes engraved with starbursts.

"Didn't you always complain that I never took Theo to see the Starlight Dreamscape Festival?"

"I managed to get passes for today. The three of us can go together as a family."

He laid the passes out in front of us like trophies, his face full of pride and doting affection.

For a brief second, I thought there was something wrong with my ears.

It had been almost a month since that argument, and he was only just remembering it now?

Then I suddenly remembered the dense cluster of unread messages that flooded my crystal when I turned it on this morning.

Hah. So he was coming to make peace.

I didn't say a word. I just kept my head down and continued tying the straps on Theo's boots.

However, Theo jumped up in excitement, looking straight at me.

"Mom, I want to go!"

My eyes softened.

Before I could even speak, Darius stammered, "But there is one condition. I have picked up Milo from the Divine Academy a few times, and now all the gods there think he is my own flesh and blood. If other gods see us painting a family portrait, it might reflect badly on him. So let's just cancel the portrait for now."

He looked incredibly guilty as he said this.

He used to tell me he never wanted Theo to become arrogant just because he was the Lord's son. That was the reason he had never once picked Theo up from the Academy.

But now, not only was he making a huge public show of picking up Cassia's bastard son, he was even forcing Theo to suffer silently for that child's sake.

Theo froze. The light in his eyes visibly dimmed.

"Oh..."

He slowly lowered his little head, his eyes turning red with grievance.

Darius did not notice his son's distress at all. "This is just a trivial request from Cassia. I didn't think it was a big deal at all."

"We can paint the portrait later. Right, Theo?"

He had absolutely no idea that Theo and I were leaving tomorrow.

This was his very last chance.

But neither of us said anything. We just nodded in silence.

"Okay."

"Sure."

Darius visibly let out a long sigh of relief. "Great. I am going to send Cassia a message. We will meet at the Starlight Dreamscape at three this afternoon."

He stood up and walked to the door, then turned back around.

"My Lady, my son. You two are what I cherish most."

Theo and I said nothing.

After he left, Theo jumped off the bed and dragged his pre-packed little bag out of the wardrobe.

"Mom," he said softly. "I do not want to see Lord Darius anymore. Can we leave early?"

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 11

Before, Theo and I were the ones running after him. When are you coming back to the estate? Could you make some time to be with your son? Do you even care about us at all? Now, the tables were completely turned. But we were absolutely never looking back.During the gods' Festival of Peace, I would take Theo traveling through the various realms. We looked up at the auroras from the snowy peaks of the northern borders, and we rode the waves through the Aegean Sea. We were living a remarkably wonderful life.Darius always managed to find out our itinerary, and he would follow us from afar.He would hide in the deepest corners of the portal halls, or sit in the shadows several stone tables away from us at the nectar taverns. When Theo practiced gliding on the snowy mountains, Darius would turn himself invisible and tail right behind him, terrified that his heir might fall.Once, Theo did fall. Darius rushed over like a madman. But Theo had already picked himself up, calmly brushing the bro

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 10

Throughout all the years we were soulmates, he had always been a proud and composed Lord. This was the first time I had ever seen him so broken and desperate. But I couldn't muster a single shred of sympathy in my heart. I only felt that he was incredibly pathetic."You are only just now remembering Theo?"Darius opened his mouth in agony, but he could not force a single word of rebuttal from his throat.I heard soft footsteps behind me.Theo was standing there barefoot, tightly hugging his little hunting bow to his chest. He looked at Darius kneeling outside the door, his expression unreadable.Darius reached his hand out to him eagerly."Theo. Father is here. Can you help me talk to Mom? Please. I do not want to lose her."He thought Theo would soften. After all, Theo used to worship him as the God of War.In the past, whenever he returned from patrolling his territory, Theo would rush over and hug him, calling out "Father, Father" with stars in his eyes. But this time, Theo only too

Those words pierced straight through Darius's chest like a divine sword. He stared fixedly at the scrying mirror, absolutely motionless.Cassia was still laughing."Oh, so you didn't know at all? Darius, you are truly pathetic. Your own Lady and your own heir have cast you aside completely, and yet you are still stupidly standing here playing the protector to someone else's son."Darius suddenly turned around and walked out."Where are you going?" Cassia yelled from behind him.He didn't look back. Her voice turned shrill. "Do you think chasing her now will make her forgive you? She has been sick of you for a long time!"Darius stumbled slightly, but his pace only grew faster.Cassia flew into a rage, grabbing a crystal bowl and hurling it at him.The crystal bowl shattered into pieces at the doorway. At the same time, Milo began to convulse violently. His face turned blue, and terrifying gasps escaped his throat."The child's magic is blocked. He cannot breathe!" a temple healer shout

Darius stood up abruptly.Even though he was utterly disgusted with Cassia, the thought of an innocent child's life hanging by a thread made him rush out of the estate.Outside the inner chambers of the Temple of Healing, Cassia paced back and forth anxiously.Milo was covered in purplish-black rashes. His face was swollen, his lips pale, and he leaned weakly against soft pillows, constantly scratching his neck.Darius was just about to push the door open when he heard Milo's weak voice from inside."Mother, I ate the Nightshade just like you said.""Will the Lord come to see me?"Darius's hand froze on the doorknob.Cassia's voice was low, but it held a hint of a smug laugh."He will definitely come.""Darius is a soft-hearted fool. All you have to do is cry, and he will come running."Milo gasped for air and said, "But it hurts so much.""Mom, am I going to die?"Cassia frowned in annoyance."Do not speak such nonsense. A little bit of poison won't kill you. Just bear with it. Do you

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 7

Darius returned to the estate. The moment he pushed open the front doors, he still harbored a last sliver of hope in his heart.Maybe Cora just took Theo to a priest friend's house.Maybe she was just furious, so she unilaterally blocked his mind link.Maybe...But the moment the doors swung wide, all his self-deception was shattered. The front hall was completely empty. On the rack that used to hold Cora and Theo's footwear, only his own battle boots remained. The main hall was empty too.The massive marriage scroll on the wall was gone. The silver cups engraved with their names were gone from the table. The memory crystal showing their family of three by the Aegean Sea was also gone.In the corner, Theo's most prized wooden unicorn carving, his marble building blocks, and his magic picture books had all been cleared out.Darius stood in the doorway, looking as if his soul had been sucked dry.He slowly walked into the inner chambers. The massive wardrobe was wide open. Not a single p

No response. He knew she had to be furious, so he started sending messages.Cora, Milo is settled. I am on my way to the festival right now.Do not leave under any circumstances. I am almost there.I am absolutely not lying to you this time. I am really coming.Still no reply. His hand shook as he held the crystal. An ominous feeling churned in his gut.Cora had never ignored him like this before. He tried connecting to Theo's mind link. Nothing. It was as if he had been completely blocked.Darius's heart pounded wildly in his chest. Panic wrapped around his throat like icy vines. He suddenly remembered last night.Cora had coldly said, "We are going so
