Chapter 2

Autor: Shirley
The portrait never happened after all.

I just took Theo back to our estate and immediately started stuffing the personal items we needed to take into our enchanted travel bags.

Right after I locked in the magical coordinates for the realm portal to the Southern Sanctuary, Cassia sent me a vision through the messaging crystal.

She was wearing an extremely precious Hera's Tears necklace. Darius was standing behind her, gently tucking a stray hair behind her ear.

That necklace was no ordinary trinket. Since ancient times, it had been the supreme symbol of the High Lady of the Realm.

At the end of the vision, Cassia flashed her usual provocative smile.

"Hera's Tears, the symbol of the Lady, and the Lord himself. They are mine whenever I call."

If I still had my old temper, I would have summoned the sacred flames to show her exactly what the Lady of the Realm could do.

But right now, watching Theo carefully organize his little bow and arrows, I only had one thought. Pathetic.

I closed the scrying mirror and confirmed our departure time for the day after tomorrow.

Not long after, Darius pushed open the heavy bronze doors. He was carrying a piping hot ambrosia pie in his hands.

Both Theo and I were stunned.

He had always despised the sickeningly sweet smell of ambrosia fruit.

Because of this, even though Theo inherited my love for ambrosia, he would always choose food that Darius liked for his birthday every year.

Why would he go out of his way to buy one today?

Theo and I exchanged a look of sheer disbelief.

Darius walked in slowly. Seeing the open travel bags, his expression shifted.

"Milo was badly frightened and cried a lot, so I stayed a bit longer to keep him company. On my way back, I suddenly remembered that you and Theo love ambrosia pie, so I picked one up."

He looked at the bags. "What is all this? Are you going on a trip?"

I shook my head, and then nodded.

"Something like that."

There were less than forty-eight hours left until the final deadline of the thirty-day waiting period. I absolutely would not allow anything to go wrong at this critical moment.

For some reason, my answer seemed to relieve him.

He quickly tried to make up for things. "The attendant at the Portrait Pavilion said you didn't end up painting it. I booked a new spot. How about we go to the Starlight Dreamscape Festival tomorrow and paint it there? I swear on the River Styx, I will be on time."

He knelt on one knee in front of Theo, his tone exceptionally sincere.

Theo, who had been packing his bow and arrows, paused. He looked at Darius, then at me.

He hesitated, as if he could not believe it.

Seeing his conflicted expression, my heart softened.

"Then let's go tomorrow," I compromised.

After all, this would be the last time father and son spent time together.

The moment I agreed, Theo's eyes lit up immediately. He hugged his little bow and arrows and scampered back to his room.

After he left, I continued packing.

Darius stepped up and stood beside me. The familiar aura of the Lord enveloped me. He spoke, his voice carrying that deliberate, practiced affection he always used.

This was always his way of smoothing things over.

"About Theo publicly calling me 'Lord' out there today..."

My heart seized violently. I forced myself to stay calm, lifting my chin to meet his gaze.

He condescendingly crouched down halfway, pushing the ambrosia pie to where I could easily reach it. "My one and only Lady," he murmured.

I had already guessed what he was going to say next. I knew his script by heart. "I know what you are thinking. You think I am paying too much attention to Cassia and neglecting you and Theo."

"But I swear to Hera, protecting her is merely my duty as a Lord. She is a minor goddess raising a child alone. I just cannot bear to watch her suffer."

He took my hand and pressed it against his chest.

"Just give me a little more time. I will sort things out with Cassia and her son. I will never let you and Theo down again."

I stared at him, trying hard to remember the last time he looked at me with those eyes.

Perhaps it was during our soul bonding ceremony that took the entire realm by storm. That moment when we interlocked our fingers with the gods as our witness, and he swore to protect me for the rest of my life.

Or perhaps it was the day Theo finally broke from his shell. He shielded that little life against his chest, his hands trembling as he planted a kiss on my forehead.

"Cora," he had said then. "I will never let you or our heir suffer a single grievance."

Those memories, so beautiful they almost felt fake, rushed back to me like a tidal wave. I stayed silent for a long time.

Finally, I decided to tell him the truth.

"Darius, actually..."

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 11

Before, Theo and I were the ones running after him. When are you coming back to the estate? Could you make some time to be with your son? Do you even care about us at all? Now, the tables were completely turned. But we were absolutely never looking back.During the gods' Festival of Peace, I would take Theo traveling through the various realms. We looked up at the auroras from the snowy peaks of the northern borders, and we rode the waves through the Aegean Sea. We were living a remarkably wonderful life.Darius always managed to find out our itinerary, and he would follow us from afar.He would hide in the deepest corners of the portal halls, or sit in the shadows several stone tables away from us at the nectar taverns. When Theo practiced gliding on the snowy mountains, Darius would turn himself invisible and tail right behind him, terrified that his heir might fall.Once, Theo did fall. Darius rushed over like a madman. But Theo had already picked himself up, calmly brushing the bro

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 10

Throughout all the years we were soulmates, he had always been a proud and composed Lord. This was the first time I had ever seen him so broken and desperate. But I couldn't muster a single shred of sympathy in my heart. I only felt that he was incredibly pathetic."You are only just now remembering Theo?"Darius opened his mouth in agony, but he could not force a single word of rebuttal from his throat.I heard soft footsteps behind me.Theo was standing there barefoot, tightly hugging his little hunting bow to his chest. He looked at Darius kneeling outside the door, his expression unreadable.Darius reached his hand out to him eagerly."Theo. Father is here. Can you help me talk to Mom? Please. I do not want to lose her."He thought Theo would soften. After all, Theo used to worship him as the God of War.In the past, whenever he returned from patrolling his territory, Theo would rush over and hug him, calling out "Father, Father" with stars in his eyes. But this time, Theo only too

Those words pierced straight through Darius's chest like a divine sword. He stared fixedly at the scrying mirror, absolutely motionless.Cassia was still laughing."Oh, so you didn't know at all? Darius, you are truly pathetic. Your own Lady and your own heir have cast you aside completely, and yet you are still stupidly standing here playing the protector to someone else's son."Darius suddenly turned around and walked out."Where are you going?" Cassia yelled from behind him.He didn't look back. Her voice turned shrill. "Do you think chasing her now will make her forgive you? She has been sick of you for a long time!"Darius stumbled slightly, but his pace only grew faster.Cassia flew into a rage, grabbing a crystal bowl and hurling it at him.The crystal bowl shattered into pieces at the doorway. At the same time, Milo began to convulse violently. His face turned blue, and terrifying gasps escaped his throat."The child's magic is blocked. He cannot breathe!" a temple healer shout

Darius stood up abruptly.Even though he was utterly disgusted with Cassia, the thought of an innocent child's life hanging by a thread made him rush out of the estate.Outside the inner chambers of the Temple of Healing, Cassia paced back and forth anxiously.Milo was covered in purplish-black rashes. His face was swollen, his lips pale, and he leaned weakly against soft pillows, constantly scratching his neck.Darius was just about to push the door open when he heard Milo's weak voice from inside."Mother, I ate the Nightshade just like you said.""Will the Lord come to see me?"Darius's hand froze on the doorknob.Cassia's voice was low, but it held a hint of a smug laugh."He will definitely come.""Darius is a soft-hearted fool. All you have to do is cry, and he will come running."Milo gasped for air and said, "But it hurts so much.""Mom, am I going to die?"Cassia frowned in annoyance."Do not speak such nonsense. A little bit of poison won't kill you. Just bear with it. Do you

  • My Son Calls His Father Lord   Chapter 7

Darius returned to the estate. The moment he pushed open the front doors, he still harbored a last sliver of hope in his heart.Maybe Cora just took Theo to a priest friend's house.Maybe she was just furious, so she unilaterally blocked his mind link.Maybe...But the moment the doors swung wide, all his self-deception was shattered. The front hall was completely empty. On the rack that used to hold Cora and Theo's footwear, only his own battle boots remained. The main hall was empty too.The massive marriage scroll on the wall was gone. The silver cups engraved with their names were gone from the table. The memory crystal showing their family of three by the Aegean Sea was also gone.In the corner, Theo's most prized wooden unicorn carving, his marble building blocks, and his magic picture books had all been cleared out.Darius stood in the doorway, looking as if his soul had been sucked dry.He slowly walked into the inner chambers. The massive wardrobe was wide open. Not a single p

Darius drove the pegasus chariot, racing straight toward the Starlight Dreamscape at top speed. The divine carriages heading to the festival jammed the cloud paths, stretching out endlessly as far as the eye could see.His hands gripping the reins were slick with cold sweat. He tried to connect with Cora's mind link over and over again. No response. He knew she had to be furious, so he started sending messages.Cora, Milo is settled. I am on my way to the festival right now.Do not leave under any circumstances. I am almost there.I am absolutely not lying to you this time. I am really coming.Still no reply. His hand shook as he held the crystal. An ominous feeling churned in his gut.Cora had never ignored him like this before. He tried connecting to Theo's mind link. Nothing. It was as if he had been completely blocked.Darius's heart pounded wildly in his chest. Panic wrapped around his throat like icy vines. He suddenly remembered last night.Cora had coldly said, "We are going so
