Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Triple Threat
I used the phone camera to zoom in on the glint on the woman's chest. I stared at it, completely stunned.

It was a four-leaf clover necklace, the same one that Joseph had secretly given to Teddy for his birthday last year.

There was one for him and one for Joseph, but none for me. And when I asked him about my missing necklace, Joseph confidently replied, "This is a father-and-son matching necklace. Of course I can't give one to you."

I had felt a little disappointed at first, but I was also happy that they were getting along very well and had a good relationship with each other. So, I didn't press any further.

Once, I even went out of my way to find it when Teddy lost it. I searched the entire neighborhood for it in the dead of the night with a flashlight, not wanting him to be upset.

But now that I thought back about it, I realized that I'd been too foolish and stupid.

That necklace was obviously a "family necklace" for the three of them.

I found it so stupid that I wanted to laugh, but my lips just wouldn't curl upward no matter what.

Soon, it was 7:30 pm, and the Parent-Teacher Community Night was about to begin. The announcement had said that the event would last for about an hour and end at 8:30 pm later.

Teddy's teacher led the three of them into the school. I then looked away, saved my video recording, and set a timer for an hour. Then, I told the Uber driver, "Turn around and go back to my house."

Ten minutes later, I arrived at the house that Joseph and I shared, and there was also a group of people with me.

Joseph had a habit of locking up all of his private things in his safe. And I had never once cared about it for the past eight years we were married.

Today, I called in a locksmith.

"Please open this safe for me," I said with a polite smile. Then, I looked at my divorce lawyer, Samuel Cochran, whom I had hired for thrice the usual price.

"And you, please make sure to take a proper video recording of the whole incident. I don't want to be sued later. It'll be too much of a hassle."

Everyone nodded and got to work.

Two minutes later, the safe door was opened. I looked inside, and there weren't too many things in there. There was just a diary and a few documents.

I opened the diary and saw that it was filled with Joseph's handwriting.

"August 3rd, 2018. Sunny. Misty and I just got married. She said she wanted to go to Alloland for our honeymoon, and I agreed."

"August 7th, 2018. Sunny. I bought the plane tickets for Misty and me to Alloland, but we didn't manage to get connecting seats. I'm a little upset."

"August 9th, 2018. Rainy. The plane just took off. The air stewardess is really cute, and we exchanged contacts. Misty's already asleep in the row in front of me. I'm glad we didn't end up seated together after all."

"August 13th, 2018. Sunny. We're in Alloland for the third day. Misty talks too much. It's annoying. I wonder what that air stewardess is doing now. I miss her."

"August 14th, 2018. Rainy. We slept together. Misty's in the room right next to ours. It's so exhilarating."

My hand paused right at that moment when I saw the date on the diary entry. I stared at it for a long time, my eyes dark and hollow. August 14th? It had only been ten days since our wedding!

I straightened my back and continued flipping to the next page with much difficulty. The rest of the entries in the diary were quite similar after that, recording all of his affectionate acts with that air stewardess.

"March 11th, 2019. Misty's pregnant. She wanted me to accompany her for her prenatal checkup, and Soph didn't like it. Whatever. Soph's more important anyway. Misty's too easy to lie to."

"June 9th, 2019. Misty's five months pregnant. Her stomach's so disgustingly huge. She's also gotten a lot uglier. Soph's still the best, young and lively."

"August 22nd, 2019. Misty threw up again while eating today. Yuck. But I can't divorce her yet. Her dad promised that I'd get a raise at the end of the year."

"October 1st, 2019. Misty just gave birth. It's a boy. I need to find a way to make sure he doesn't get too attached to her."

I suddenly crashed into the corner of the study desk, and the pain spread from my waist to the rest of my body, but I didn't even seem to feel it. I flipped to the next page at once and continued reading.

For the rest of the next six years, from 2019 to 2025, Joseph's diary recorded every trick he'd used to make me entrust Teddy to him and how he gradually integrated that woman into Teddy's life, finally completely replacing me once Teddy was enrolled into elementary school.

Meanwhile, those documents were records of Joseph's secret transfer of assets and illegal bribery over the years.

I read another line in his diary.

"November 8th, 2025. Teddy finally addressed Soph as 'Mommy.' I just need to persevere for another year until Misty's dad retires. Once he's of no use to me anymore, I'll finally be able to divorce her."

I never thought that Teddy would risk his life to save me.The red light outside the emergency room at the hospital remained lit for a very, very long time. It stared coldly at me like the predatory eye of a beast. Finally, it went out in a cold, cruel manner. The doctor came back out with a weary expression on his face. He took off his mask and faced me, shaking his head gravely as he said, "I'm sorry. We've done everything we could."Just before being wheeled into the emergency room earlier, Teddy had used the last of his strength to clutch my hand tightly. His voice was weak and broken like a bare whisper of the wind."I'm sorry… Mommy… C-Can I… still be your son again… next time?"Those were the very last words he ever said to me.My world fell apart at that moment.…I held a quiet funeral for Teddy. I personally chose a photo of him smiling the brightest I'd ever seen for his tombstone photo.Joseph's fate was quickly sealed. He was convicted of multiple crimes and sent

My questioning was like a red-hot knife slashing Joseph's hypocritical mask to shreds. He stared at his own familiar handwriting in the photocopy and gradually paled. He couldn't get another word out.I gave him a final look and said icily, "The evidence of your accepting bribes and embezzling company funds is irrefutable, and you're going to spend the rest of your life rotting away in jail. You'll have plenty of time to repent then."He looked up at me abruptly. For the first time in my life, I saw genuine fear reflecting in his eyes.He was terrified now. He knew he was completely done for this time.…I received a phone call from Joseph two days later. He sounded unusually calm as he asked to see me one last time."Just… for the sake of our eight years of marriage."I went silent for a short while. Then, I agreed.I knew that this was his last struggle. It was also going to be the final trap I laid for him.Joseph set the meeting place at an abandoned auto repair factory in

The next day, I went to the law firm and handed over Joseph's diary and evidence of his asset transfers and bribery to the legal team."My demands are simple," I said. "Firstly, I want a divorce, and he will be leaving with nothing. Secondly, I want all of his gifts to his mistress to be recovered."And lastly, submit the evidence of his bribery to the Securities and Exchange Commission."I wanted him ruined, disgraced, and destitute. The lawyer's letter and court summons were delivered to Joseph as soon as possible, and his retribution quickly arrived. When he went back to the company to pack his things, he was greeted with his coworkers' contempt and constant whispering. He was then dragged out of his office, the one that he used to be so proud of, by the security guards, in a very disheveled manner. He was utterly humiliated and lost every shred of dignity on his way out.Teddy's life was equally as difficult at school. News of what happened during the parent-teacher event spr

I then clearly announced Joseph's upcoming fate, making sure to enunciate each word clearly, "I have all the evidence of your extramarital affair and malicious transfer of marital property. I've also read everything in your diary. Mark my words—you will be leaving this marriage with nothing."Then, my gaze turned to Sophia, still as sharp as a knife."Did you enjoy living a life that was never yours to begin with for such a long time, Ms. Sophia Maynard? You've been really enjoying yourself, haven't you?"I watched her instinctively clutch the necklace she was wearing and chuckled coldly."I will have my lawyer recover every single penny that Joseph spent on you over the past years. All of that—including that beloved four-leaf clover necklace around your neck."Her face turned paler than before as she swayed on her feet, nearly passing out.It was time for the farce to end.I turned around and didn't spare them another glance before walking toward the classroom door."Mommy!" a

Joseph then turned to the other parents in the audience and began his horrible performance."Everyone! Please don't believe what that woman is saying! She's just a fanatic completely obsessed with me!"My wife, Sophia, and I have always had a great relationship, and this bitch is only trying to blackmail us and create a wedge in our relationship!"He got more and more worked up as he spoke, making himself out to be nothing but an innocent victim."You can all testify for me! It's always been me and Sophia dropping Teddy off and picking him up from school ever since school started! Which one of you has ever seen this woman before?" he demanded, still pointing at me.A few parents immediately sided with him."You're right, Mr. Baird. I've never seen this woman before.""I bet she's just a homewrecker trying to split up your family. She looks like nothing but bad news."Another fashionably dressed woman then said in a shrill, disdainful voice, "Ms. Hooper, won't you hurry up and k

I hadn't spoken in a loud voice. However, it was cold and sharp like an icicle, instantly piercing through the warm, harmonious facade of the classroom."Hi, Ms. Hooper. I am also Theodore Baird's mother. You haven't had the chance to talk to me yet, have you?"The air seemed to freeze at once. Dozens of pairs of eyes turned to stare at me in shock, disdain, confusion, and curiosity. They felt like needles stabbing into my skin.Joseph's warm, gentle smile instantly shattered while he was still standing at the front of the classroom. His face, lips, and even his ears were visibly drained of all color, making him look pale and pallid like a zombie. As for Sophia, who was standing right next to him, her reaction was even more intense. She acted like a frightened rabbit and let out an ear-piercing scream, instinctively letting go of Joseph's arm. The fear and guilt were evident on her face.It made sense. After all, she was just a mistress who was now being confronted by the actual,
