Chapter 5

Author: Lindsey Wilson
Sylvie instantly recognized the pearl. It was the one she spat out when she took on a human form all those years ago.

She raised her auction paddle and called out, "I'm bidding 500 million dollars."

As soon as she finished speaking, the crowd burst into commotion.

Connor looked at Sylvie in shock. "Have you lost your mind? Even if you're jealous, you shouldn't be hiking up the price like that."

Sylvie couldn't even be bothered to look at him as she replied, "It's none of your business. I'm not spending your money."

When she first came to the human world, she pawned off many of the treasures she brought from the underwater realm. All that money was stored in her private bank account, and she had more than enough to buy the pearl.

Anna was displeased to see Connor talking to Sylvie. "Connor, I want you to help me get the Pearl of the Merpeople!"

For the first time, Connor was a little hesitant when it came to fulfilling one of Anna's requests. Shaw Group was currently facing a bit of a financial crisis. He didn't quite have enough cash on hand to buy something that would cost him over 500 million dollars.

"Annie, I've already bought so many treasures for you today. Let's just forget about this one…"

"No! I must have it!" Anna insisted angrily. "Have you forgotten? You said when you were little, you dreamed that I became a mermaid and saved you from the ocean. Let's make the Pearl of the Merpeople the symbol of our love, okay?"

The auctioneer's voice rang out once more, "500 million going once. 500 million going twice…"

"Connor!" Anna urged frantically.

Connor gritted his teeth and raised his paddle, calling out, "550 million!"

That was the most he could fork out right now.

Smiling faintly, Sylvie didn't even hesitate to double her bid. The crowd was in an uproar, and Anna turned pale with fury.

After the auction, Connor approached Sylvie and held his hand out. "Give me the pearl."

"What are you talking about?" Sylvie asked in confusion.

Connor was taken aback. "Weren't you bidding on it for me?"

Sylvie found that notion laughable. She looked straight into his eyes and said, "This belongs to me. Why should I give it to you?"

Alas, Anna's voice drowned out her retort. "Connor, to make it up to me, you need to watch the fireworks with me tonight."

Connor had failed to catch what Sylvie said.

Once Sylvie got back to the house, she called up a moving company and had them collect her things to be trashed.

When the movers saw the exquisite clothes and shoes that filled the closet, they were rather hesitant. "Are you sure you want to throw everything out, Ms. Waverly?"

Sylvie nodded at once. She was severing all ties she had formed with the human world in the last seven years and returning to her own world, unburdened by anything.

She took out the notebook. Seeing the numbers that filled the pages, she silently reminded herself that she only needed one last time. Then, she could leave Connor for good, never to cross paths again.

However, she had prepared to give him a gift after the final round.

Sylvie had set up a camera in the worship room where the altar was.

What Connor wanted to protect the most was his persona as the religious, celibate man.

Well, Sylvie was going to use the camera to record her final bout of intimacy with him and upload it for all to see. That was the "surprise" she was giving him before her departure.

As if in a trance, Connor continued to tail Sylvie. Over the next few days, he witnessed all of her interactions with Damian and saw just how happy she was after leaving him.He was like a spectator spying on her blissful life, all the while consumed by regret."I'm sorry… I'm so sorry… I should never have neglected you. I should never have treated you as nothing more than a tool. I should never have sacrificed your feelings just to protect my reputation… It hurts, Sylvie… It hurts so much." Connor kept confessing his remorse. He slapped himself over and over again. Even when his lips started bleeding, he didn't stop.Unfortunately, Sylvie could neither see nor hear any of this.Connor didn't know how long he spent hovering next to her in spirit form. All he knew was that he spent every day living in endless regret. One day, the voice from earlier rang out in his ears again, "I'll give you a chance now. If Sylvie opens that letter she's holding, she'll be able to see you."Conn

Connor saw the scene before him turning into a hazy blur before slowly revealing an underwater world. Thousands of merpeople were swimming around freely, stirring up bubbles.Immediately spotting Sylvie, he hurried forward. He wanted to hug her, but his arms passed right through her.The voice from earlier rang out once more, "Since you're dead, it's obvious you can't make physical contact with anything from the real world."Connor watched as Sylvie rested in the arms of a merman. She was holding a coral bracelet."Thank you for the protective bracelet you gave me, Damian."Connor felt a hitch in his throat. He instantly recognized the coral bracelet. Sylvie had worn it since the day she married him. Back then, he mocked her for wearing such a cheap-looking bracelet. It made her seem poor.Staring at it now, he felt a tinge of bitterness.Sylvie and Damian knew each other even before she married him, so what did that make of him? He wanted to ask her that, but the only thing he

Connor went to the beach. The sun was setting, and a cool breeze blew. It was a lot like the day he first met Sylvie. He sat on the beach, dumping his bottles of beer and boxes of cigarettes beside him.He kept drinking and drinking until he abruptly spat out some blood. After wiping the corners of his mouth, he stared at his bloodstained hands and started laughing."I'm coming to keep you company, Sylvie."Connor walked into the water. Soon, it was as high as his waist, but he didn't feel the coldness at all. He kept making his way further out to the ocean, murmuring repeatedly, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."Just then, a voice rang out behind him, "I'm going to take you down with me, Connor!"Connor turned around and saw Anna. Her clothes were grimy and tattered, her skin was gaunt, and she even had blood on the corners of her lips."It's all your fault. You're the reason why I ended up like this. Those men violated me, my own mother kicked me out of the house, and it's all because of

Anna managed to escape from the agonizing ordeal. Battered and bruised, she dragged herself back to the Larson residence. However, as soon as she entered the house, her mother, Martha Bateman, slapped her hard."I can't believe you had the audacity to do something this shameless! You've disgraced our entire family! Mr. Shaw told me you're the one who hired those men to sexually assault Sylvie."The Larsons are a prominent, well-established family. Everyone in this family was raised with a strict upbringing and taught to be respectable members of society. We would never have raised someone as deplorable as you!" Martha hissed."From now on, you are no longer our daughter. Your younger brother will take over all of the family's assets. You are a jinx to the family. All you've done is destroy our reputation in Jewelton!"Anna was wide-eyed in disbelief as she stared at Martha, who once loved her dearly. She couldn't believe that Martha valued the family's reputation over her own daugh

Nick stood beside the hospital bed and scanned the medical chart he was holding with a look of concern. Connor already suffered from a chronic illness. After all his recent experiences and emotional turmoil, he now had only a month left to live.Just as Nick was fretting over whether he should inform Connor about this, Connor woke up. The symptoms of his episodes, combined with his being affected by the recent series of devastating events, aged him considerably. He looked ten years older than he did before. While Connor was unconscious, he had a dream. He dreamed of how he'd taken Anna's arm and mercilessly abandoned Sylvie. He saw the despair in Sylvie's eyes as she watched him leave while the beggars tore off her dress. His heart ached as regret enveloped him.Looking up, Connor said to Nick, "Help me find out whether Anna hired those beggars."Nick hesitated briefly before passing a folder to Connor. "I already investigated the matter while you were unconscious, Mr. Shaw. It wa

By the time Connor arrived at the abandoned factory, the sky had already turned dark. The police had cordoned off the crime scene, but many of the residents from nearby areas had gathered in the vicinity and were discussing the situation."I heard the victim died a horrible death. She was sexually assaulted by over a dozen men! Even her organs were hanging out of her.""That's not all I heard. Apparently, the body was discarded over two weeks ago without anyone bothering to report it. She was just left there for all to see!""Oh, my, the poor woman! Her family must be heartbroken right now."Connor pushed through the crowd and stumbled up to the factory.A police officer tried to assure Connor, "It's impossible to identify the body based on facial features, but don't worry, Mr. Shaw. It might not be Mrs. Shaw."Nodding, Connor tried his best to seem composed. Nevertheless, Anna's words kept ringing in his ears."What a shame. You won't ever get to see Sylvie again."At that ve
