Chapter 3

Penulis: Apis Fortis
I'd worked up the courage to beg him one last time, and he'd still turned me down.

That was when I broke. Tears streamed down my face as I turned and fled.

I ran straight into a few of the staff carrying new furniture upstairs.

I looked up. The door to Christian's late mother's room stood wide open, and the staff were going in and out.

I stopped and turned to look at him.

He explained, "I was worried someone would harass Serena again if she lived alone, so I brought her and her brother here. The guest rooms are too plain, so I'm letting her stay in Mom's room for now."

Christian pinched my cheek, but his words cut like a knife.

"At least Serena will take good care of Mom's room. Unlike you, she doesn't go around causing trouble."

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. My chest felt tight.

Back then, Christian had set aside a room for me in his own house. He said the guest rooms were too plain, so he decorated it himself to look like my old home and invited me to stay.

But for Serena, even the guest rooms weren't good enough. He gave her his mother's room.

I used to think I was his one exception. Only now did I see what he was like when he truly cared about someone.

Eli scoffed. "All you're doing is making trouble for Serena."

His eyes shifted to me. "Everybody knows Violet's in love with you. She calls your name in her sleep. If you really care about Serena, keep your distance from her. Otherwise, Violet might go after her."

Christian showed us the diamond ring on his finger. "I already proposed to Serena."

He glanced at me. "Violet, you need to understand. Nobody picks a spoiled little sister to be his wife."

Tears blurred my eyes. It felt as if a piece of my heart had been carved out. Even breathing hurt.

He was the one who'd spoiled me. He'd told me I never had to hide my feelings or change myself to please anyone, because he'd always clean up whatever mess I made.

Now the man who'd once let me get away with anything was telling me to my face that someone like me didn't deserve to be chosen.

I couldn't hold it together anymore. I burst into tears.

Christian froze. He reached out to wipe away my tears, but I slapped his hand away.

I didn't need pity I had to beg for.

I ran to the sunroom they'd built for me. It was climate-controlled so I could escape my allergies. My own secret little world.

When I got there, Serena was trimming flowers. My sunroom had become a greenhouse.

I stopped short and just stood there, stunned.

When Serena saw me, her voice was soft and innocent. "Isn't it pretty in here? All I said was that this room would be perfect for growing flowers, and Christian turned it into a greenhouse for me."

She happily showed me her seeds and her tools, but her eyes were bright with open malice. "Violet, I'm going to take everything that belongs to you, one piece at a time, including Christian."

Rage shot through me. I raised my hand to slap her. "Get away from me, you thief!"

Suddenly, someone shoved me hard from behind. I fell among the flowers and inhaled a lungful of pollen. Almost at once, my throat began to swell shut.

It was Serena's little brother, Vaughn Blake. He flailed at me with both fists. "Don't you pick on my sister!"

It took every bit of strength I had to push him off.

Vaughn fell to the floor, threw himself into Serena's arms, and wailed.

Before I could even get my balance back, someone grabbed my arm.

Tristan's face was dark with fury. His voice was low and vicious. "Didn't I warn you before I left? Don't touch Serena or her brother, or you'll answer to me."

  • My Three Childhood Friends Chose Her, I Married the Don   Chapter 10

On our wedding anniversary, an anonymous package arrived from New York. When I opened it, I found the turquoise pendant.A small card was tucked inside the box. It read, "I hope you're always happy, with nothing in the world to worry about."Expressionless, I closed the box and dropped it straight into the trash.I'd already decided never to look back. There was no reason to stay tied to anyone from my past.Later, the same unknown number called me three times. The first two times, I ignored it and let it ring until it stopped on its own.The third time, I finally picked up.I didn't pick up because I still had feelings for him. I picked up because it was time to end things between us for good. When the call connected, I heard Christian's drunken voice on the other end. "Violet."He said my name softly, then fell silent. I heard a bottle clink against a glass now and then, and the sound of quiet crying.I didn't say anything. A few minutes later, he spoke again. "Violet, how have you b

I stopped following what happened to them. I had more important things to do.I was sitting in on an internal Moretti family meeting with Vittorio. The elders lined both sides of the long table, and each of them wielded enough influence to shape the family's decisions.Three days earlier, while going through some files, I'd spotted a loophole in a contract Vittorio was reviewing.I pointed out the problem and suggested how to fix it.Vittorio listened. He didn't dismiss me the way everyone else had. He took my analysis seriously.I'd graduated from one of America's top law schools. I had the skills to handle complex legal problems. But back in the Nelson family, the three boys I grew up with had always treated me like a little girl who needed to be protected. They kept me away from power and money, as though my world should hold nothing but jewelry, gowns, and a sheltered life on the estate.Vittorio gave me a completely different choice. He asked me to be his legal counsel. When I hes

"And then another Serena shows up? I'm not some pet that comes running whenever you wave your hand."For a second, Christian stopped breathing."That won't happen, I promise you. I know my own heart now. I only love you, Violet!"I laughed. "If loving me means taking what's mine and giving it to another woman, I don't want your love. There's no room for you in my heart anymore. Whatever we had is over. And you just say you'll take me away, like it's nothing? What about the Nelson family? Is that how you repay the Don for raising you?"I held up my hand to show him my diamond ring. Vittorio and I had spent three days picking out our wedding rings."I'm Violet Moretti now. You should keep your distance."With that, I signaled the driver to go.Not long after the car pulled away, Eli texted, "If anyone ever gives you a hard time, come home to me. I'll always have your back."I didn't reply. I blocked his number too.Christian didn't give up.He kept trying to talk me into abandoning the m

When the helicopter touched down at the estate on Moretti Island, I was so nervous I couldn't stop twisting the hem of my top.Vittorio Moretti was known for his brutality. I doubted life with him would be easy. But the Nelson family's shipping routes across the Atlantic were in trouble, and Conrad needed Vittorio's investment to keep the business afloat.I took a deep breath and reminded myself that Vittorio wanted this marriage too. He was counting on Conrad to help him break into the American market. If anything happened to me, the deal would fall apart, and he'd never let that happen. The moment my eyes met Vittorio's, my heart began to pound harder than ever.He stood before the main doors. His dark overcoat made his shoulders look even broader, and his face was cold and hard. When he looked our way, everyone around him fell silent. The island's morning air was damp and chilly. I'd barely stepped out of the helicopter when the wind made me shiver.Vittorio glanced at me, took off

When Christian found Serena, she was in my room, ordering the staff to fill it with flowers.Someone said quietly, "Ms. Lane is allergic to pollen."Serena was no longer acting timid and helpless, as she always did around him. She lifted her chin. "Of course I know."She snickered. "Even better if Violet goes crying to Christian again. Everybody's on my side anyway. It'll teach her where she stands."Serena turned around, pleased with herself, and came face-to-face with Christian standing in the doorway, his expression dark. Her face went deathly pale."Christian," Serena stammered. "When did you get here? Why didn't you say anything?"Christian looked ready to explode.Around him, Serena had always been so meek and careful. Her teary eyes and vague hints had won his trust and turned him against me.He never imagined it had all been an act. When he finally spoke, his voice was cold enough to make her shake. "Say something? So you could put on that pitiful act for me again?"Serena trie

The next morning, Christian stood in my empty room, holding the breakfast he had made for me himself.Unease crept over him, far too late.He opened our text thread and wrote, "Where are you? I got it wrong yesterday. I'm sorry."Ten minutes passed without a reply. Before, I never would have left one of his messages unanswered for so long.He frowned, pushed down his anxiety, and texted again, "Violet? Stop sulking. If you hadn't been going after Serena all this time, I never would have gotten it wrong."A red exclamation mark appeared beside his message: Not Delivered.Christian gripped his phone tighter, anger rising. He still thought I was throwing a tantrum. When his calls wouldn't go through either, he realized I'd blocked his number too and finally panicked.Eli suddenly burst in. All his usual calm and control were gone. Looking almost feral with rage, he seized Christian by the collar."Violet agreed to marry into the Moretti family! Did you even know?"The words hit Christian
