Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Cindy stared at the papers in disbelief, wondering if I was being serious. It was just one heart, and I actually had the nerve to ask for a divorce over it.

She grabbed the box of pastries and hurled it into the trash. "If you don't want this family, then don't ever come back."

Her phone rang just then, and she picked it up.

"Cindy? Where has Hayden been lately?"

It was Dad, which was rare. He rarely called to ask about me. Usually the only name out of his mouth was Tristan's.

Cindy thought it over and realized my parents were the only people who could pressure me into showing my face. And since Tristan had almost healed anyway, she told Dad about the surgery.

My parents rushed to the hospital that night. The moment Tristan saw them, he couldn't stop crying. The three of them held each other and sobbed for a while before my parents finally asked about me.

"Where's your brother? He's right here in the hospital. He can't even be bothered to come see you?"

Tristan hesitated. "He already left the hospital."

Mom held Tristan tighter. "Left the hospital? He's got some nerve. A few days after surgery and he's already running around out there like he can't die."

Dad cut in. "Watch what you're saying. Tristan had the surgery, sure, but there's no guarantee there won't be problems down the road. If Hayden drops dead, what will happen to Tristan then?"

Mom caught herself and knocked on wood. "Don't jinx it. Even if he does die, he'd better not go before Tristan needs him. Sweetheart, don't worry. Dad and I will always take care of you."

Tristan felt a wave of warmth at their words.

The next day, Cindy walked into the room to find my parents gathered around Tristan in a cozy family scene. Something about it stung. She realized that she'd never once seen them treat me that way.

"Cindy, thank goodness for you. Tristan's heart is all thanks to your work."

My parents thanked her over and over without once mentioning my name. When Cindy asked if they'd heard from me, their mood soured immediately.

"Why do you care about him? He's out of the hospital, so he's obviously fine. Focus on Tristan instead.

"Tristan's been fragile since he was a kid. Hayden, on the other hand, is healthy as an ox."

They'd always wanted to push Tristan and Cindy together, but Tristan's condition had kept them from saying it outright. Now that the surgery was done, all they needed was for me and Cindy to divorce, and everything would fall into place.

Before Cindy could respond, Kelly walked in. She remarked, "Dr. Green is truly devoted to her husband. She's in here every single day."

My parents heard that and assumed that it was already a done deal. Tristan went a little red, but Cindy's expression turned cold.

"Who told you he's my husband?"

Kelly didn't pick up on her tone and laughed it off. "Everyone on the floor knows. Stop pretending."

Then she walked out to get back to work.

My parents pulled Cindy aside. "Cindy, since Hayden isn't around anyway, it doesn't hurt if your colleagues think that Tristan is your husband. They'll take better care of him that way."

Cindy glanced at Tristan, who looked pale, and swallowed her anger.

Back in the office, she was about to track down Kelly and set the record straight when someone told her that her mentor had come by. She hurried to the department head's office, and the moment she saw David Langston, she threw her arms around him.

"Dr. Langston, it's been so long. How have you been?"

He nodded and looked her over, smiling. "I heard you performed a heart transplant. It looks like I taught you well."

He went on about how he'd operated on Cindy when she was a young girl, and how he never imagined she'd grow up to follow in his footsteps.

Tristan continued to wail, "I can't believe how horrible Hayden is! All I did was take one of his hearts! Why did he come up with these fake messages to trick you when he's perfectly fine?"Mom couldn't stand listening to him any longer. She walked over and slapped him hard across the face.He couldn't believe she'd just hit him."Did you just hit me because of Hayden? But why? What's so good about him? He's just some worthless bastard that doesn't even have a family who wants him!" Tristan screamed, his tone nastier than his words.Cindy couldn't hold back either. She seized Tristan by the throat with both hands, shrieking, "And who do you think you are, huh? Do you seriously think I wanted Hayden to donate his heart to you because I cared about you? Do you think I'd even feel like talking to you if it hadn't been for his heart?"She had a strange feeling when she first met Tristan, one that she couldn't put into words. It was as if just the sight of him gave her the urge to subm

Tristan had stolen my parents from me, and then he stole Cindy, too. Perhaps I was never meant to exist in this world.Cindy returned to Tristan's hospital room with my phone in her hand. There were questions she needed him to answer. From the moment he woke up, he noticed the pensive, tormented looks on Mom's and Dad's faces. When they saw that he'd regained consciousness, they didn't immediately crowd in to fuss over him. They simply sat to the side and sighed.Tristan turned to Margaret, who also remained silent. He started to wonder if I'd suddenly popped out of nowhere and said something to them. But he quickly dismissed that possibility. He was certain that if I'd shown up, Mom and Dad would force me to apologize to him for disappearing for days without coming to see him. Moreover, Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna were still standing outside the hospital room. He knew that they wouldn't leave until they got the money. He was still trying to figure out the situation when Cindy ente

Kelly's heart settled back in place when she saw that it was Cindy who had come barreling in."What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be accompanying your husband?" Kelly asked.Ignoring the question, Cindy stormed up to Kelly and grabbed her, questioning, "Were you the one who signed off on releasing the patient in Bed 8?"The moment Kelly realized Cindy was talking about me, she remembered everything Tristan had said about me. She scrunched her nose in disdain before replying, "What about it? He's dead, so isn't it a given that his body should be released?" She kept talking while Cindy stared at her in horror."Weren't you the one who did the surgery? He stopped breathing the moment you stepped away from the operating table."Cindy slowly released her grip on Kelly, repeatedly shaking her head. "No. You're lying to me. That's not what happened!"Thinking that Cindy was simply remorseful over my death, Kelly tried to comfort her."Don't feel bad about it. Your husban

The rest of the hospital staff snapped into action, swiftly ushering everyone else out of the hospital room. Standing outside the door, Cindy kept her eyes locked on Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Although my parents were concerned about Tristan's condition, there was something even more important to get to the bottom of first.Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna frantically racked their brains for a way to explain away this situation. Then, without warning, Margaret dropped to her knees before my parents."Gary, Janice, I'm so sorry. I've done a great harm to your family."Everything had happened so fast that Cindy hadn't even wrapped her head around it all. She stepped forward to try to help Margaret back onto her feet, only for Margaret to launch into a recount of the past.Cindy listened as Margaret explained that when Cindy was a child, she had a weak heart. The family had to find a heart donor for her, and by chance, they found me.They had paid Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna a large sum of m

The hospital staff were puzzled. As far as they knew, Cindy's husband was the patient in Bed 32 who had just undergone heart surgery."My husband has already been discharged. He was in Bed 8," Cindy declared.Upon hearing that, one of the doctors dropped the medical chart in his hands. It hit the floor with a loud clatter. Dr. Roth shot that doctor a look of displeasure, and the latter hastily picked it up again.Just as the atmosphere turned a little awkward, the door opened. My parents walked in, followed by Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Seeing a room full of doctors, they assumed that these people had come to check on Tristan's condition. Mom and Dad hurried forward at once."Doctor, how's my son doing?"Aunt Edna followed closely behind. She'd come over to the hospital to ask me for money. She'd camped outside my house for several days without catching sight of me, so she had no choice but to call Mom and Dad. When she heard that Tristan had undergone heart surgery, she and Uncl

Cindy froze. "What surgery are you talking about, Dr. Langston?"Dr. Langston hadn't expected that reaction from her. He said, "The heart transplant. The one you had when you were a young girl."The office went quiet for a moment before someone burst in. "Dr. Green, you need to come quick. There's a fight in Bed 32."Tristan was in Bed 32, so Cindy took off running when she heard that. She could hear the shouting before she even made it through the door."Don't you dare deny it. My nephew donated a heart to your daughter."Cindy rushed in and pulled the two people apart. When Margaret Fields saw her daughter, her eyes immediately welled up with tears. The other woman, the one who'd been pulled away, spotted Cindy and started yelling again."It's you. My nephew Hayden's heart is inside you."Cindy stared at the woman in disbelief, and she suddenly recalled my words."What's going on here?"My parents had just walked into the room and found Aunt Edna screaming at Cindy.
