Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Cindy said, "Okay. I'll stay with you a few more days."

Tristan watched her sit back down before he slowly closed his eyes. Down in the morgue, an orderly stared at my body, unsure of what to do.

"It's been two days, and nobody's come to claim him. What are we supposed to do?"

Another orderly was tidying up nearby. "What are you staring at? Finish up so we can clock out."

The two of them stuffed my body into a bag together.

"Look at him. Dying like that, all cut open. He probably wasn't a good person."

"Good, bad, it doesn't matter. Everyone looks the same after they're cremated."

"True. It's still a shame, though. He was so young."

Two more days passed. Once Cindy saw that Tristan was recovering well, she finally remembered to see me. She walked into my room and found it empty. A nurse was changing the sheets.

"Where's the patient from this bed?"

The nurse looked up. When she saw that it was Cindy, she replied, "He's no longer staying in the hospital."

That irritated her. I'd just had surgery, and instead of staying in the hospital to recover, I'd taken off somewhere. She pulled out her phone and dialed my number, but the call wouldn't go through.

"Fine. Go ahead and drop dead out there for all I care."

She stormed back to Tristan's room. He picked up on her anger right away.

"Is Hayden upset? He won't forgive you?

"This is all my fault. Let me go talk to him so you two don't end up fighting because of me."

He tried to get out of bed, and Cindy stopped him immediately. "Don't worry about him. All you need to focus on right now is getting better.

"When you're discharged, and your parents hear the good news, they'll be so happy. As for Hayden, he's fine. He already left the hospital."

But the memory of how I'd begged her before the surgery still nagged at her. She couldn't understand why I would refuse to save my own brother. Seeing Tristan continue to think of me and worry about me even from his hospital bed only made her think less of me by comparison.

She figured that if I was stubborn enough to leave the hospital on my own, I could cool off for a while. She'd deal with me when Tristan was ready to be discharged.

In the doctors' office, her colleagues were laughing and chatting, but the moment Cindy walked in, everyone went quiet.

She found it strange. "What were you all just talking about?"

Nobody answered. After a long pause, one colleague came over and put an arm around her shoulder. "What do you think? We were just saying how sweet you and your husband are together."

Cindy thought of how I'd been forced into donating my heart. She supposed I really did love her deeply. It was coerced, sure, but I'd still done it. I'd helped her and saved a life.

Thinking about it that way, she was willing to forgive me for disappearing, but the fact that I wasn't picking up her calls still made her angry.

Her colleague noticed the frustration on her face and asked, "Is your husband in a bad mood?"

Cindy didn't answer.

"He just had surgery. It's normal for him to be upset," her colleague continued. "Give him some time. Be a little understanding. How about you do something nice for him?"

That seemed to help. Cindy's expression softened. She remembered how much I loved the pastries from the bakery near our apartment, so she decided to stop by on her way home after work.

She arrived at our apartment carrying the box of pastries. "Honey? I got you those pastries you like."

But nobody answered.

She set the box down and noticed the divorce papers I'd left on the table a week ago. The moment I found out she wanted me to give up my heart, I'd already made my decision.

Tristan continued to wail, "I can't believe how horrible Hayden is! All I did was take one of his hearts! Why did he come up with these fake messages to trick you when he's perfectly fine?"Mom couldn't stand listening to him any longer. She walked over and slapped him hard across the face.He couldn't believe she'd just hit him."Did you just hit me because of Hayden? But why? What's so good about him? He's just some worthless bastard that doesn't even have a family who wants him!" Tristan screamed, his tone nastier than his words.Cindy couldn't hold back either. She seized Tristan by the throat with both hands, shrieking, "And who do you think you are, huh? Do you seriously think I wanted Hayden to donate his heart to you because I cared about you? Do you think I'd even feel like talking to you if it hadn't been for his heart?"She had a strange feeling when she first met Tristan, one that she couldn't put into words. It was as if just the sight of him gave her the urge to subm

Tristan had stolen my parents from me, and then he stole Cindy, too. Perhaps I was never meant to exist in this world.Cindy returned to Tristan's hospital room with my phone in her hand. There were questions she needed him to answer. From the moment he woke up, he noticed the pensive, tormented looks on Mom's and Dad's faces. When they saw that he'd regained consciousness, they didn't immediately crowd in to fuss over him. They simply sat to the side and sighed.Tristan turned to Margaret, who also remained silent. He started to wonder if I'd suddenly popped out of nowhere and said something to them. But he quickly dismissed that possibility. He was certain that if I'd shown up, Mom and Dad would force me to apologize to him for disappearing for days without coming to see him. Moreover, Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna were still standing outside the hospital room. He knew that they wouldn't leave until they got the money. He was still trying to figure out the situation when Cindy ente

Kelly's heart settled back in place when she saw that it was Cindy who had come barreling in."What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be accompanying your husband?" Kelly asked.Ignoring the question, Cindy stormed up to Kelly and grabbed her, questioning, "Were you the one who signed off on releasing the patient in Bed 8?"The moment Kelly realized Cindy was talking about me, she remembered everything Tristan had said about me. She scrunched her nose in disdain before replying, "What about it? He's dead, so isn't it a given that his body should be released?" She kept talking while Cindy stared at her in horror."Weren't you the one who did the surgery? He stopped breathing the moment you stepped away from the operating table."Cindy slowly released her grip on Kelly, repeatedly shaking her head. "No. You're lying to me. That's not what happened!"Thinking that Cindy was simply remorseful over my death, Kelly tried to comfort her."Don't feel bad about it. Your husban

The rest of the hospital staff snapped into action, swiftly ushering everyone else out of the hospital room. Standing outside the door, Cindy kept her eyes locked on Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Although my parents were concerned about Tristan's condition, there was something even more important to get to the bottom of first.Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna frantically racked their brains for a way to explain away this situation. Then, without warning, Margaret dropped to her knees before my parents."Gary, Janice, I'm so sorry. I've done a great harm to your family."Everything had happened so fast that Cindy hadn't even wrapped her head around it all. She stepped forward to try to help Margaret back onto her feet, only for Margaret to launch into a recount of the past.Cindy listened as Margaret explained that when Cindy was a child, she had a weak heart. The family had to find a heart donor for her, and by chance, they found me.They had paid Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna a large sum of m

The hospital staff were puzzled. As far as they knew, Cindy's husband was the patient in Bed 32 who had just undergone heart surgery."My husband has already been discharged. He was in Bed 8," Cindy declared.Upon hearing that, one of the doctors dropped the medical chart in his hands. It hit the floor with a loud clatter. Dr. Roth shot that doctor a look of displeasure, and the latter hastily picked it up again.Just as the atmosphere turned a little awkward, the door opened. My parents walked in, followed by Uncle Brian and Aunt Edna.Seeing a room full of doctors, they assumed that these people had come to check on Tristan's condition. Mom and Dad hurried forward at once."Doctor, how's my son doing?"Aunt Edna followed closely behind. She'd come over to the hospital to ask me for money. She'd camped outside my house for several days without catching sight of me, so she had no choice but to call Mom and Dad. When she heard that Tristan had undergone heart surgery, she and Uncl

Cindy froze. "What surgery are you talking about, Dr. Langston?"Dr. Langston hadn't expected that reaction from her. He said, "The heart transplant. The one you had when you were a young girl."The office went quiet for a moment before someone burst in. "Dr. Green, you need to come quick. There's a fight in Bed 32."Tristan was in Bed 32, so Cindy took off running when she heard that. She could hear the shouting before she even made it through the door."Don't you dare deny it. My nephew donated a heart to your daughter."Cindy rushed in and pulled the two people apart. When Margaret Fields saw her daughter, her eyes immediately welled up with tears. The other woman, the one who'd been pulled away, spotted Cindy and started yelling again."It's you. My nephew Hayden's heart is inside you."Cindy stared at the woman in disbelief, and she suddenly recalled my words."What's going on here?"My parents had just walked into the room and found Aunt Edna screaming at Cindy. Aunt Edn
