Winning Back the Wife

The day before my wedding, I received a message from an unknown number asking me to meet in a hotel room. "I hear you're marrying the Prince's heir tomorrow. "I'll give you nine million dollars. All you have to do is give me the access crest and tell me his whereabouts." I said yes, and I went there that same night. But when I opened the door, I found my fiancé Adrian glaring at me, his triumphant vampire childhood sweetheart beside him. "Adrian, I told you a long time ago. Humans cannot be trusted. "She only pretends to love you. She was after your money all along." My fiancé glared at me, clamped a hand around my wrist, and gritted his teeth. "Why?" But I suddenly laughed. "Because I wanted to see how many more times the two of you were going to test me." When my mother was dying, I asked him for a loan. The sum was nothing to him, and he asked me whether money was the reason I was with him. I worked myself into the ground scraping together money for her treatment, and the strain cost me the baby. Then he decided I had only used the pregnancy to force him into marriage and had never wanted his child. After that the tests kept coming. I explained. I cried. I tried to prove myself. He never actually believed me. "That was the ninth time you and Seraphina tested my love for you. "I'm tired. Let's end this."

Chapter 1
Elena's POVAfter I said it, the room stayed quiet for a long time.Adrian was still holding my wrist. He'd frozen for a second without easing his grip, and my skin had gone red under his fingers.Once, I would probably have cried from the pain. Then I would have cried as I explained that I had never considered betraying him and had never been with him for money. When the message came and I saw the words "nine million dollars," I already knew something was wrong. When they mentioned the access crest, I was almost certain it was another test from him and Seraphina.I had kept the crest close to me since the day Adrian gave it to me. I rarely took it off and had never considered handing it to anyone. If I'd wanted to explain, all of it could have been explained.I simply didn't want to say a word that day.Seraphina laughed first."End it?"She looked at me with open mockery in her eyes."Elena, you do not think you can turn this around, play the victim, and erase what just happened, do

Chapter 2
Elena's POVSomething in his face finally changed."Elena."I didn't stop.As the ring came off, it left a faint band around the base of my finger.I put it into his hand."What are you doing?""Giving it back.""I never told you to give it back.""I don't need it anymore."Adrian's expression darkened."Over this? Over today?"I looked at him and had nothing to say.To him, today was only today. This test was only one test.He wouldn't remember me crying through a whole night hunting for evidence that I hadn't taken money from a noble. He wouldn't remember standing at my hospital bed, right after I lost the baby, and asking whether the pregnancy had been a way to force him to marry me.And he would never know how long it took me, after every accusation, to talk myself into understanding him again.Adrian is only being careful. He is the Prince's heir, and there are too many people around him who want to use him.I should understand. That is what I told myself, every time. But today, w

Chapter 3
Elena's POVWhen I found out I was pregnant, Adrian and I had been together for several years. That day I took the results back to the estate and sat alone in my room for a long time. The doctor told me that carrying a vampire's child is dangerous for a human. The child takes a great deal of blood and nourishment from the mother, and the further along you are, the weaker you become. The birth itself can go wrong.I was frightened. But when Adrian found out, he was far happier than his usually composed self. That same night he proposed.I said yes without a moment's hesitation. After that, I never again considered ending the pregnancy.I knew my own life might be in danger. But I trusted Adrian.I even thought that if it came to the very worst, he wouldn't stand there and watch me die.If he turned me in time, I would still have a chance. So I didn't feel I was gambling with my life.I simply felt that the man I had loved for years and I would soon become a family. After the baby was bo

Chapter 4
Elena's POVOnce again, I spent a long time explaining myself.I told Adrian that I had never considered using the baby to force him into marriage. When I found out I was pregnant, I was frightened. If I hadn't trusted him and loved him, I would never have had the courage to keep it, and I wouldn't have said yes to him.By the end I was crying. My father died young and my mother was gravely ill. Apart from him I had nobody.During those years, my happy memories with Adrian were the only thing keeping me going. It hurt, and I still didn't want to let go, so I told myself his position forced him to be careful, and I tried to understand him.Adrian didn't press further. He was quiet for a while and said he understood.I thought that was the end of it.Later I understood that it was only the first time. After that, if anyone raised the smallest doubt about me, Adrian would ask. Then I would find time to gather evidence again. I would prove my innocence to him: I had never met those nobles

Chapter 5
Elena's POVWhen I came out of the hotel, I didn't take Adrian's car.The driver followed me out and asked twice, but I shook my head both times.Adrian had told me to return to the estate, think everything through, and come to him with an explanation.I had nothing left to explain.I walked slowly along the road outside the hotel. My place on the edge of the human world was not close. The distance, a twenty-minute drive, felt endless on foot.My mother had just died.Tomorrow was supposed to be my wedding.A few hours earlier I had handed back the ring and the crest myself. With so many things happening at once, I was not as devastated as I had imagined I would be.I couldn't even cry.My body just felt heavy, and I walked slower and slower. What she'd said at the end kept coming back. She wanted me to find someone who could believe me.I had never really thought about it before.I had always felt that Adrian being willing to marry me was proof enough that he loved me.And that as lon

Chapter 6
Elena's POVThe pre-wedding dinner at the estate went ahead as planned.A great many nobles had come from other territories. They looked at the undecorated hall, confusion written across their faces.Voices buzzed through the hall as everyone waited for us to come out and explain.I changed out of the clothes I'd worn all day at the hospital and washed my face. The person in the mirror looked exhausted. Her eyes were still swollen.I looked at myself for a while, and it struck me that in a few hours I was supposed to be standing beside Adrian in a wedding dress. The dress was still hanging in the next room.A month ago, trying it on, I had been looking forward to our wedding. So little time had passed, and now I had no wish even to look at it again. When a member of staff came for me, I had already packed.I left the case in the room and followed her to the hall.Everyone there was dressed in finery; only I wore plain clothes and looked completely out of place.I thought that from the

Chapter 7
Adrian's POVThe next morning the housekeeper told me Elena had left the estate. At first I didn't take it in."When?""Some time before dawn, apparently."I frowned. The night before, the Council had decided that she would be formally expelled from the Prince's territory today.I had assumed she would at least wait until it was light. And I had never intended to actually let her go.When I saw her in the gallery the night before, I stood there and waited a long time.I thought she would come over, but she only glanced at me and turned away.Every time before, however bad it got, if I gave her a little time, she came to me in the end.She would cry and tell me the rumors weren't true. And I would listen to all of it in silence. If she had backed down even once, or merely said that she did not want to leave, I would not have let the Council expel her.I had already worked it out.If it couldn't be smoothed over immediately, I could send her to the house in the northern territory for a w

Chapter 8
Adrian's POVThe doctor must have thought I hadn't heard, and repeated it.Elena's mother was dead.It had happened the day before the wedding.I held the phone, and I thought about Elena in that hotel room.Elena had looked pale, and her eyes had been red.I had taken it for guilt and fear after being exposed.Looking back, she had not once cried and explained herself as she used to.She had lost her mother a few hours earlier.I asked the doctor exactly what had happened to her mother in the end.He told me there had been a new overseas treatment worth trying. The treatment was expensive. Around nine million dollars had to be raised. If it could have started before the illness progressed, there might have been a chance. The money wasn't raised in time.By the time Elena had put part of it together, the window had closed. He said that in that period she had sold a great deal of what she owned to raise it.She had also taken on a great deal of work. The pregnancy had already left her i

Chapter 9
Elena's POVAfter leaving the vampire world, I returned to the apartment where I used to live.At first, I did not cope well. The place had stood empty too long and there was dust over everything. My mother had been there before. The cup she had bought me was still in the kitchen, and the things she had bought on her last visit remained in the cabinet.I would get halfway through tidying and stop.Sometimes because I thought about her.Sometimes because I thought about the baby.More often my head was empty and I wasn't thinking about anything.Sometimes I simply lost all strength to move and could only lie on the floor, staring at the ceiling. There used to be so much in my life to worry about.Whether there was enough for her fees that day.How the baby was.Whether Adrian had heard something new.Which noble had said a few extra words to me that day, and whether it would become a new rumor by tomorrow. And now all of it was gone at once.I didn't know what I was supposed to do.At f

Chapter 10
Elena's POVThe day Adrian came to the human world to find me, the weather was good.I'd just come out of the gallery and was talking to a colleague on the street.Since being expelled from the vampire world, I had been living in my old apartment. It was where I had lived when the two of us first met.I hadn't moved, and I hadn't avoided anything. I assumed he wouldn't come, and that we wouldn't meet again. But from a distance, I saw a man standing across the road beneath a black umbrella. He wore a long coat that covered him almost completely, and a daylight ring gleamed on his hand.Even so, the sunlight had left him looking unwell. It took me a few seconds to recognize Adrian. He had rarely been out in daylight before. So seeing him there did surprise me.My colleague left first.Only then did he come over.We stood a little apart. His eyes were shot through with red, as though he hadn't slept properly in a long time.Adrian stared at me, his lips pressed into a tight line. He seeme
