Elena's POVAfter I said it, the room stayed quiet for a long time.Adrian was still holding my wrist. He'd frozen for a second without easing his grip, and my skin had gone red under his fingers.Once, I would probably have cried from the pain. Then I would have cried as I explained that I had never considered betraying him and had never been with him for money. When the message came and I saw the words "nine million dollars," I already knew something was wrong. When they mentioned the access crest, I was almost certain it was another test from him and Seraphina.I had kept the crest close to me since the day Adrian gave it to me. I rarely took it off and had never considered handing it to anyone. If I'd wanted to explain, all of it could have been explained.I simply didn't want to say a word that day.Seraphina laughed first."End it?"She looked at me with open mockery in her eyes."Elena, you do not think you can turn this around, play the victim, and erase what just happened, do

Elena's POVWhen I found out I was pregnant, Adrian and I had been together for several years. That day I took the results back to the estate and sat alone in my room for a long time. The doctor told me that carrying a vampire's child is dangerous for a human. The child takes a great deal of blood and nourishment from the mother, and the further along you are, the weaker you become. The birth itself can go wrong.I was frightened. But when Adrian found out, he was far happier than his usually composed self. That same night he proposed.I said yes without a moment's hesitation. After that, I never again considered ending the pregnancy.I knew my own life might be in danger. But I trusted Adrian.I even thought that if it came to the very worst, he wouldn't stand there and watch me die.If he turned me in time, I would still have a chance. So I didn't feel I was gambling with my life.I simply felt that the man I had loved for years and I would soon become a family. After the baby was bo

Elena's POVWhen I came out of the hotel, I didn't take Adrian's car.The driver followed me out and asked twice, but I shook my head both times.Adrian had told me to return to the estate, think everything through, and come to him with an explanation.I had nothing left to explain.I walked slowly along the road outside the hotel. My place on the edge of the human world was not close. The distance, a twenty-minute drive, felt endless on foot.My mother had just died.Tomorrow was supposed to be my wedding.A few hours earlier I had handed back the ring and the crest myself. With so many things happening at once, I was not as devastated as I had imagined I would be.I couldn't even cry.My body just felt heavy, and I walked slower and slower. What she'd said at the end kept coming back. She wanted me to find someone who could believe me.I had never really thought about it before.I had always felt that Adrian being willing to marry me was proof enough that he loved me.And that as lon

Adrian's POVThe next morning the housekeeper told me Elena had left the estate. At first I didn't take it in."When?""Some time before dawn, apparently."I frowned. The night before, the Council had decided that she would be formally expelled from the Prince's territory today.I had assumed she would at least wait until it was light. And I had never intended to actually let her go.When I saw her in the gallery the night before, I stood there and waited a long time.I thought she would come over, but she only glanced at me and turned away.Every time before, however bad it got, if I gave her a little time, she came to me in the end.She would cry and tell me the rumors weren't true. And I would listen to all of it in silence. If she had backed down even once, or merely said that she did not want to leave, I would not have let the Council expel her.I had already worked it out.If it couldn't be smoothed over immediately, I could send her to the house in the northern territory for a w

Elena's POVAfter leaving the vampire world, I returned to the apartment where I used to live.At first, I did not cope well. The place had stood empty too long and there was dust over everything. My mother had been there before. The cup she had bought me was still in the kitchen, and the things she had bought on her last visit remained in the cabinet.I would get halfway through tidying and stop.Sometimes because I thought about her.Sometimes because I thought about the baby.More often my head was empty and I wasn't thinking about anything.Sometimes I simply lost all strength to move and could only lie on the floor, staring at the ceiling. There used to be so much in my life to worry about.Whether there was enough for her fees that day.How the baby was.Whether Adrian had heard something new.Which noble had said a few extra words to me that day, and whether it would become a new rumor by tomorrow. And now all of it was gone at once.I didn't know what I was supposed to do.At f
