Chapter 2

Penulis: Echoes of Summer
Claire stayed beside my gurney. She crouched down, typed on her phone, and held up the screen.

[Is your lower back hurt?]

I nodded at once.

[Did something sharp stab you?]

I nodded again.

[Is it still in there?]

I gave her a firm nod.

Claire's expression tightened, and she reached around to check my back. The moment she pressed against my side, my whole body jerked.

"That bad?" She glanced at my rigid dress belt. "I need to get this off so I can examine you."

As she reached for the buckle, I shook my head sharply.

I wanted her to treat me, but blood soaked my undershirt and stuck it to the wound beneath the belt. She couldn't just pull everything away.

I lifted a hand and mimed cutting the fabric with scissors.

Claire understood and asked a nurse to bring her a pair. The cold blades barely touched my uniform before Sophia called out behind us.

"What are you doing?"

She hurried over and took the scissors from Claire.

"He told me something sharp went into his lower back," Claire explained. "His clothes may be stuck to the wound. I need to cut them away so I can examine him."

"He told you?" Sophia looked at me, her expression hardening. "Can you even understand his signs?"

"Not all of it," Claire said. "But he can hear me, and he's answering my questions."

Sophia understood every sign I made. After I lost my voice, she spent months helping me through rehab.

Back then, she kept telling me, "Take your time. I don't care how long it takes. I'll always listen."

I signed as quickly as my shaking hands allowed, trying to explain what happened.

The chandelier fell, and I pushed Evan out of the way. A metal rod pierced my lower back and broke off inside me.

But as soon as I signed Evan's name, Sophia caught my hands and pushed them down.

"Enough. It was an accident. Evan didn't cause it."

I went still, then shook my head hard.

I wasn't blaming him. I was trying to tell her I didn't have much time.

Sophia cut me off before I could finish.

"It's our wedding day. Do you think he wanted this to happen? Why do you always have to blame him?"

I stared at her, my jaw tight. She had misunderstood me again.

It was always like this once Evan became part of the Bradford family.

While I recovered from my injuries, I needed a quiet room. But Evan complained that he couldn't sleep, so Mom told me to give him mine.

When I refused, everyone said I was using my injuries to make the family wait on me.

Then Evan took the old watch my grandfather left me. I asked for it back, and somehow that made me selfish.

Later, Sophia started taking Evan to his hospital appointments without telling me.

All I asked was that she let me know ahead of time. But she called me controlling and accused me of resenting my own brother.

Evan could speak for himself. One complaint from him carried more weight than anything I signed, no matter how many times I tried to explain.

This time, there was nothing to argue over. I just needed help before it was too late.

Evan called from the exam room, his voice strained.

"Sophia, I'm feeling lightheaded."

She let go of my hands and hurried inside.

I reached for her, but she was already gone.

Claire picked up the scissors again, and Mom stepped in front of my gurney.

"This is a public hallway. Are you going to cut his uniform off with everyone watching?"

Claire took a breath before answering. "What's more important right now, his life or his uniform?"

Mom pointed at the white sheet beneath me. "There's no blood on it. If he were seriously hurt, don't you think we'd see some?"

Just then, Evan walked out of the exam room with Sophia steadying his arm. A bandage covered his forehead.

He noticed the scissors in Claire's hand. "Mom, let her take a look at Kyle. It's his wedding day."

Mom's expression softened. "You're hurt, and you're still worried about your brother. He can wait. With your condition, you could start bleeding again at any moment."

Evan pressed his lips together but said nothing. Sophia stayed beside him and never once looked my way.

Claire spotted a small, dark red puddle beneath my gurney. She grabbed a piece of gauze and pressed it to the floor. It came away soaked in blood.

She held it up.

"He's been bleeding this entire time. Why won't you let me examine him?"

Reporters crowded outside the building on the day of the public hearing.Claire testified first. I was still conscious when I arrived at the hospital, she said. She tried to examine me three times, and my family stopped her each time. Before she finished, she held up a photo of the blood-soaked gauze."He was bleeding onto the floor, but because the blood didn't show through his dark uniform, they insisted he wasn't hurt."Paige took the stand next. She admitted she relied too heavily on my mother's judgment instead of reassessing me herself."Kyle kept looking at me. He knew I might be the last person who would stop and listen. But in the end, I walked away."Victor submitted the emergency call records. After the chandelier fell, he offered to call a second ambulance right away.Mom worried about what the guests would say and insisted I stay to finish the ceremony."If we'd sent him straight to the hospital, he would've gotten there 40 minutes earlier."Each witness described

During a later round of individual interviews, Mom was the first to change her story.Until then, she had insisted she misread my signs. This time, she sat in front of the camera for a long time before speaking."I understood him."The investigator looked up. Tears dripped onto her hands."Kyle told me there was a piece of metal inside him. He said he was dying. I didn't think that was possible."Lila said no pieces were missing from the chandelier. Sophia said he didn't have any visible injuries."I thought he'd distract everyone from treating Evan if he kept signing. So I told them he was saying something else."She never misunderstood me. She made sure no one else understood me, either.By the time she finished, she looked ten years older. In Sophia's own interview, she said, "The first time, I understood 'chandelier,' 'Evan,' and 'lower back.' But I already assumed he was blaming Evan."The second time, he clearly told me he needed help and was dying. I still thought he w

A month later, the preliminary findings were circulated to everyone involved.Sophia relied on the accident report and her own assumptions instead of examining me. She canceled my tests and gave Evan my slot for a scan. She also understood my pleas for help but dismissed them as attempts to pressure her and compete for attention.Sophia remained suspended while authorities investigated her role in my death. When Sophia received the findings, she offered no defense. The hospital director sighed. "You were the youngest doctor we'd ever put in charge of the ER. If this hadn't happened…""But it did," Sophia interrupted. "I refused to examine my own husband. I can't ask another patient to trust me."Mom received her findings, too. She used her position as head nurse to obstruct my care, lowered my triage priority without authorization, and stopped the staff from getting an interpreter. While her nursing license was under review, she returned to the hospital and stood outside the n

It was dark by the time Sophia returned to the home we were supposed to share. The bedroom was still set up for our wedding night. Fresh linens covered the bed, and framed photos on the nightstand traced our relationship from when we first met to the wedding. But half my side of the closet was empty. She never noticed. For the past month, she spent most of her time at the hospital. Even on her days off, Evan called whenever he needed something. While I packed, she missed the empty hangers.Under the desk, she found a cardboard box with her name on it.Inside was a pair of gloves with sensors sewn into the lining. Connected to a phone, they could turn basic signs into spoken words. They were my wedding gift to her.A card lay beside them.[You always worry you'll forget how to sign. If you do, these will help you understand me.]Sophia put on the gloves and signed my name with shaking hands. Her phone spoke in a flat, electronic voice."Kyle."She signed again."I'm sorr

After the memorial, Gemma gave Mom, Lila, and Sophia a hard drive. It held videos I had recorded over the three years since I lost my voice. Back then, I believed they would understand if I could just find a way to explain myself clearly. In the first video, I was fresh out of the hospital, with the wound on my throat still healing. I stood outside the bedroom I gave up for Evan, struggling with signs I was only beginning to learn.[I don't mind letting him have the room, but my doctor said I need somewhere quiet to recover. Downstairs, I'm right next to the kitchen. Between the noise and the pain, I can't sleep.]That same day, Mom told our relatives the injury changed me. According to her, I was so difficult now that I wouldn't even give my brother a bedroom. The second video was about Grandpa's watch.I kept explaining that he had given it to me when I enlisted. I just wanted it back.Mom called it an old watch and said it wasn't worth fighting with my brother over.In the

Gemma arrived at the Bradford house carrying a document envelope.Mom hurried over. "I'm Kyle's mother. His family should be making the funeral arrangements."Gemma took a notarized authorization form from the envelope without arguing. My signature was at the bottom. It named her as the person responsible for my remains, my memorial service, and my belongings after my death. My immediate family could attend, but they couldn't change the arrangements without permission. They couldn't speak for me about decisions I made during my life, and they couldn't forgive anyone on my behalf.I underlined that last sentence.Mom went pale as she read it. "When did he sign this?""Six months ago," Gemma said. "Mr. Kyle told me his family kept putting words in his mouth. He was worried that even after he died, you still wouldn't let him have his say."Sophia took the document from her.Gemma was listed as my emergency contact. Not Sophia, Mom, or Lila. The paper shook in Sophia's hands. "We
