Chapter 2

Penulis: Evan Reed
He was the boy I had raised since he was a baby. He had been a soft, sweet little thing who used to wrap his arms around my neck and say, “I love you the most, Daddy.”

However, as he grew older, he became more and more impatient with me.

Somewhere along the way, the boy I loved with my whole life stopped making room for me in his heart. There was only Uncle David.

He preferred David over his own father, the father who had been there every single day.

A sudden sting rose in my nose, but I forced back the urge to cry.

Bryan was the one I had worried about the most. I had even considered staying for him.

It seemed I had only been fooling myself.

When she heard the commotion, Olivia hurried upstairs. When she saw what was happening, she quickly pulled Bryan in front of her.

“Bryan, what are you doing? How can you hit your dad? What have I always taught you? You’re supposed to respect him and behave. Why are you being so disobedient? Apologize to your father right now. And today is your dad’s birthday too. Why won’t you let him cut the cake with you?”

Bryan puffed up his cheeks and shouted, “I did nothing wrong! Today is my birthday. If Uncle hadn’t told me to come get him, I wouldn’t have come at all. He was mean to Uncle too. He’s the bad one. It’s his fault for not spending my birthday with me. I did nothing wrong!”

After saying that, he turned to look at David. “Good thing I have Uncle. I’m cutting the cake with him this year. I don’t want Daddy to do it with me anymore.”

I watched my son scream, cry, and refuse to admit any fault. My heart was filled with disappointment. This was the child I had loved for five years.

Olivia looked at our son, then turned to me with a hint of awkwardness. “Hugh, it’s Bryan’s birthday today. Just let it go. I’ll discipline him later.”

As I gazed at her, I understood perfectly. She probably agreed with what Bryan said.

Sure enough, she continued a moment later. There was a complaining edge to her tone as she said, “But you’re at fault too, Hugh. Bryan is still so young. This is when he needs people around him the most. How can you keep leaving him on his own? It’s a good thing David has been there for him. No wonder the boy sides with his uncle instead of you.”

Even though I had long since stopped expecting anything, sadness still settled in my chest.

The system’s punishment was already unbearable. On top of that, I had to devote what little strength I had left each day to caring for Bryan. He demanded constant attention. The only times I ever stepped back were when I simply could not stay on my feet any longer. I would ask him to let me have a moment to myself.

I never expected that I, the father who had raised him since he was born, would be judged for taking the occasional moment to rest. In an instant, I became the most irresponsible father, while David, who had only ever spent a little time playing with him, was treated like the one who had done everything right.

How absurd.

Perhaps my expression looked really dark, so Olivia tried to smooth things over.

She gave Bryan a final warning, saying, “Bryan, apologize to your father. No matter what, hitting him is wrong. After you apologize, you can cut the cake together with your father and your uncle.”

Bryan pouted. He looked like he had been wrongly accused, but he mumbled an apology anyway.

“I’m sorry, Daddy. You can cut the cake with Uncle and me, but you can’t bully Uncle anymore. If you do, I’ll hit you again.”

Bryan still looked just as adorable as ever. In the past, just looking at him made my heart melt. I would have given that boy the moon if I could.

However, at this moment, all I felt was a coldness spreading through my limbs. This was the child I had loved for five years.

My voice came out very soft, like I was suppressing something. “It’s fine. You can cut the cake with your uncle.”

I had no intention of eating that cake. Besides, I would not be at any of his future birthdays. It did not matter who cut the cake anymore.

The doctor looked at her with pity. “Your husband’s preliminary cause of death appears to be cardiac arrest. This type of condition is acute. If someone had been with him and called for help in time, he might have survived. Unfortunately, your husband wasn’t that lucky.”That meant, if only someone had been there to perform CPR at the time, I could have been saved.“What was I doing at the time? I was... He’s dead because of me.”I hovered in the air and watched her fall apart, but I felt nothing inside.I did not want to watch, but I could not walk away.I was gone. What was the point of all her tears? When I was alive, there were so many chances to keep the promises, but she never cherished any of them.I was gone. So, who exactly was she putting on this show for?Olivia forced herself to get through the funeral arrangements. She had thought losing the man she loved would be the worst thing she would ever experience. She was wrong. That was not the worst. She thought David

As expected, Olivia called shortly after.“Hugh, something’s come up on my end. I might be a little late.”My heart sank slightly, but at the same time, I felt a strange sense of relief. It was the same predictable waiting and disappointment.I smiled bitterly and thought, ‘Well. Looks like even the last bit of hope is gone. Every time, the outcome is exactly what I expect.’“Countdown complete. Host, please confirm departure and proceed to the next mission.”My eyes swept across the family photo one last time. Without hesitation, I said, “Confirm.”I thought, ‘Olivia, I wonder what you’ll feel when you find out I died while you were with your lover. Bryan, after I’m gone, the uncle you love so much will be your dad. I hope that makes you happy.’“Host, world loading requires time. You will need to remain here in a spiritual form for a while.”For some reason, Olivia suddenly felt a sense of unease. That unease had been with her ever since the first time she gave in to tempta

I turned off my phone expressionlessly.Later that night, when Olivia saw me lying in bed, safe and sound, she was relieved.“I was so worried, I sent you messages, and you didn’t reply. I thought something had happened to you. Was your phone dead?”With a ready excuse, I decided to go along with her assumption. “Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. I had to take a cab back on my own.”“You really scared me. I thought something was wrong.”Olivia seemed like she was genuinely worried.Even when she slept, she clung to me tightly, as if I were a lost treasure she had just gotten back. She slept peacefully, while I lay wide awake, unable to sleep.I silently wondered, ‘When I’m gone, will you regret this?’Four days remained. “The host has four days left before departing this world.”Another day passed.I suddenly felt a bit disoriented. Time seemed to be flying by.While I was lost in thought, Olivia suddenly presented me with an elegantly wrapped gift box. She treated it l

Five days remained.I took Bryan to the amusement park by myself, the one he had been begging to visit. I did my best to keep him happy. However, throughout the day, Bryan kept talking about David.“Daddy, you’re so useless. You were scared in the haunted house. Uncle wouldn’t be scared. Daddy, do you think Uncle would like this toy? I want to buy it for him. That thing is so cool. Daddy, can you buy it for me? Uncle would definitely buy it for me.”In the past, I would have felt hurt and asked him to stop bringing him up, but at that moment, I felt nothing. If I still felt hurt, that would mean I still had hope. When there was no hope left for someone, the hurt would stop as well.Gradually, as I did not react the way Bryan wanted, he got bored and started playing on his phone.I let him.I had intended to spend more time with him during my last days, but since he did not want to, I would forget about it.To my surprise, three hours later, Olivia showed up, with David right b

Inside the church, before the solemn figure of the statue, Olivia looked at me with deep affection.“Hugh, no matter what happens, you have to believe that you are the one I love most. From now on, let’s spend the rest of our lives together. You are my guiding light, so I won’t lose my way when I struggle in this sea of suffering. Okay?”How familiar this scene was. It was those same devoted eyes that got me to fall for her back then. I thought she was my salvation. Instead, I had fallen into another torturous place.Crack!Perhaps even God had grown tired of hearing false vows from one of his own faithful. A small chip of stone broke loose from the windowsill beside her and landed heavily at her feet.Olivia clutched her rosary until her knuckles went white. She began whispering prayers under her breath, over and over.I found it bitterly ironic.Due to that incident, the priest himself came to apologize. He ordered the church staff to prepare a special meal for us. It was a si

“Six days remain until the host’s departure from this world.”After breakfast, I finally received a message from Olivia.[Hugh, I was really exhausted from working late last night. Can you pick up Bryan and bring him home?]I looked at the screen and smiled bitterly. She was not even trying anymore. She waited until the next day to send a message. Back then, she would at least come up with an excuse in advance.Still, he was my son, after all. I had to pick him up. In the end, I drove to the Spencer family’s home. The house looked vast and empty with no one in sight.Confused, I made my way upstairs. On the second floor, I heard the unmistakable moans of a man and woman together.David’s door was wide open, as if they wanted someone to hear.Hearing that, I froze. When Olivia was with me, she was always so restrained and composed. There were times I felt like I was sharing a bed with a nun. However, it turned out that even a nun could be consumed with passion, just not f

Olivia’s expression turned cold. She replied with irritation, “Robert, Lisa, Hugh and I just have different roles in this family. Today is Hugh’s birthday as well. There’s no reason the birthday boy should be the one running around.”Seeing Olivia standing up for me made a deep bitterness bubble up

This time, I had no intention of wasting my time or energy, trying to please anyone.Bryan seemed to sense my cold attitude. Feeling hurt, he ran over to David. Then, in fluent Ruslanthian, he whispered, “Uncle, I think I’m starting to dislike Daddy. I wish you were my dad instead.”David shot me

Bryan cheered in excitement as he cut the cake with David, while Olivia watched them with all the warmth in her eyes, as if they were the perfect family of three.None of them spared me a glance. In the past, seeing that would have left me feeling despondent. I stood at the door of the church chapel and watched my wife, Olivia Spencer, lean into the arms of another man. That man was my younger brother, David Spencer.David complained, “This rosary really digs into the skin.”“Then, take it off for me.”Olivia had always treasured her rosary. She would
