Chapter 4

Autor: Nora Blythe
During the day, Mom's attending physician called me into his office and slid the bill across the desk. "Your payments are far too overdue. We'll have to free up your mother's room. Her bed's already been moved into the hallway."

He sighed. "You saw what happened yesterday. Honestly, I'd recommend stopping treatment. She's suffering as it is."

I understood every word he said.

I sat on the floor of the hallway as people came and went. All that kept Mom hanging on now was an oxygen tank.

After hesitating for a long time, I texted Alexis: [Mom might not make it. Come see her one last time. She misses you too.]

Alexis read it but didn't reply, so I had no choice but to call. I called again and again until she finally picked up.

It was noisy on her end. "What is it?"

"Did you see my message?"

Alexis sounded irritated. "Yeah, I saw it. What do you want to tell me? You want money?

"Rudy, you don't have to keep coming up with new ways to ask me for money. I'm drowning in debt. Didn't I just give you seventy dollars last time?

"Your mom's been in treatment for years and she never got better. People get sick and die. It's normal. If she dies, it was meant to be."

She hung up.

The dial tone echoed sharply down the hallway.

I didn't know when Mom had opened her eyes, but she took my hand and held on. "I'm done with treatment. I still have a little money saved. Keep it for you and Alexis to pay off your debts.

"Don't blame Alexis. She's been working hard too."

My voice caught in my throat. I didn't know what to say to her.

In the end, Mom breathed her last in my arms, still defending Alexis right up until she died.

In a daze, I got her death certificate and wandered aimlessly along the bridge.

Not far off, fireworks were going off over the beach, where a crowd of people were throwing a party. Through the crowd, I saw Alexis.

As if pulled by some unseen force, I walked over and heard them laughing and talking.

"Alexis, you're amazing. That poor-ass husband of yours still doesn't suspect a thing."

"You win this round of the game."

Alexis raised her glass and laughed. "Good thing I covered my tracks so well. You have no idea. Lately, he keeps using his mom as an excuse to ask me for money. If he knew who I really was, who knows how hard he'd try to bleed me dry."

The word "game" slammed into my mind.

The death certificate in my hand rustled in the sea breeze.

Just as she turned around, I left the beach.

Back home, I searched the closet for my birth certificate, getting the paperwork ready to divorce her. When my fingers brushed a crumpled slip of paper tucked inside, I stopped. I smoothed it out.

It read: [Early pregnancy, three weeks.]

Counting back, there was no way the baby was mine.

I stared at that piece of paper, and suddenly I thought of the baby she'd aborted. Tears spilled down my face uncontrollably.

In the dark, my phone screen lit up. Alexis had sent me 280 dollars.

Alexis: [Something came up today. I won't be home tonight.]

Alexis: [I just got paid. Use this for now.]

I didn't reply. I sat on the couch all night, staring at nothing.

As soon as the sun came up, I went to a law firm, dark circles under my eyes.

"I want a divorce." I laid the documents out on the desk.

When the divorce lawyer saw the photos and the marriage certificate on the desk, his expression changed several times. He pushed the marriage certificate back across the desk.

"I can't handle this. The certificate's fake. And I know this Alexis Goldstein you're talking about. She's already legally married to someone else."

I stood there, stunned, and it took me a long time to come back to my senses. I nodded without saying a word.

The divorce lawyer looked at me with a hint of pity. "Rich people like playing these kinds of games. Now that you know, you could go after compensation."

I shook my head and stood up. I threw the fake marriage certificate into the trash can.

It took me a week to prove it to myself. Every last bit of it had been fake.

Holding my mother's ashes, I left without looking back.

From then on, she would never find me in this city again.

The next time I saw Alexis was three months later. She looked just the way she had back then. "Rudy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I've only just realized the person I love is you."I looked at the swell of her belly, and the corner of my mouth twitched. She seemed to notice the distance in my eyes, and a flicker of panic crossed her face. "No matter what, I'm the one who was wrong. I'll make it up to you. I shouldn't have trampled on your feelings."I'd never imagined a girl like Alexis would apologize to me.But my mother was gone. To me, her apology was worthless."You know what? When I found out we were never actually married, I was heartbroken and relieved at the same time."You rich people play games like this, trampling on other people's sincere feelings. I think it's pathetic. But at least we weren't married. That way, we didn't even have to waste time splitting up."I took a deep breath and looked at Alexis. "We were never from the same world in the first pl

Back then, the Playing Poor game was all the rage in her circle. At first, Alexis couldn't be bothered with it. But when her best friends egged her on, she set her sights on Rudy, who was waiting tables at a restaurant. She pretended to be broke, and her friends pretended to be collectors hounding her for money. Rudy stepped in front of her and paid 1,400 dollars of her "debt" himself.Little by little, they got to know each other. When he learned she still had several hundred thousand dollars in debt to repay, Rudy didn't hesitate for a second. He said he'd marry her right then and there. It would be a lie to say she wasn't moved. Her heart had fluttered right then, and she was ready to end the game there. But her best friends said, "A man's promise for a moment and his promise for a lifetime sound exactly the same. Wait three months after the wedding and see."I bet it won't even take three months. Two weeks, tops, and he'll show his true colors."And just like that, the two o

Alexis stood frozen, her lips trembling. She racked her brain, desperately searching her memory of last night.Craig had called to tell her Rudy wanted a divorce. And today happened to be their first "wedding anniversary."She'd planned to announce the end of the game once yesterday's party was over. Instead, Rudy's demand for a divorce had beaten her to it. And she'd been drunk, so she hadn't thought it through.Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the flowers she'd ordered in advance, meaning to reveal her true identity to Rudy on their first anniversary.Alexis rubbed her temples and dialed Rudy's number. She called again and again, but no one ever picked up.She was getting annoyed. Rudy never turned his phone off on her, and he never ignored her calls. Besides, he had designated-driver jobs to take so he could pay for his mother's treatment.Irritated, Alexis threw on a jacket and got ready to head to the office.Right then, a call came in."Rudy, you finally..."The rest

Alexis's party was cut short by a call from Craig Nichols. "Alexis, I'm sorry. That fake husband of yours came to me for a divorce, and I let it slip."Craig and Alexis were childhood friends of a sort. They just weren't in touch nearly as often as she and Jeff Hocken were. Still, he knew all about the game she was playing.Alexis had drunk too much and was a little fuzzy. She leaned against Jeff, listening as Craig explained what had happened. Her breath trembled. "He really came to you for help with a divorce?""Yeah. I didn't realize he was your fake husband until I saw the photos, so it just slipped out. And he knows the marriage certificate the two of you have is fake too. What do we do now?"Alexis's mind couldn't keep up, yet she stayed perfectly calm. "If he knows everything, then the game's over. I'll explain it to him when the time comes. He'll understand."With that, she hung up.Beside her, Jeff finally breathed a sigh of relief the moment he heard that Rudy Hawkinso

The next day, I went to the hospital after work to visit my mother, who was seriously ill. She'd been in the hospital for a long time, and I could never scrape together enough for her medical bills.I was sitting by her bed peeling an apple when the machines beside her suddenly started blaring an alarm.A doctor rushed in and examined her, then immediately wheeled her toward the operating room, calling back to me as he went, "Mr. Hawkinson, go pay the fees right now. You've seen your mother's condition for yourself."Watching my mother convulse, blood bubbling from her mouth, my ears rang and my mind went blank.I stumbled to the billing office and dug out my wallet and bank cards. Everything I had on me added up to less than 140 dollars.Just when I was at my wits' end, I ran into Alexis. She clearly hadn't expected to see me at the hospital. She froze for a moment, then quickly crumpled the paper in her hand into a ball and stuffed it into her handbag.Right then, I didn't car
