Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
Adam stood in front of me.

"I told Mike not to come." His tone wasn't harsh. If anything, it carried a hint of negotiation.

His words hit me like a bucket of cold water. "What did you say?"

"Mike is the Harris family's driver. If you call him to pick you up without telling anyone, your parents are going to ask questions," he replied.

Adam held up his phone so I could see the screen. Mike's number sat at the top of the call log. It was the call we'd just ended.

"I'll handle this. Just come back with us for now. We can talk when we get to the hotel."

I stared at the call log for three seconds. "What gives you the right to cancel it?"

"Anthony, I'm doing this for your own good." His tone was sincere, just as it had been back when we'd called each other brothers.

For a moment, I almost believed him.

Then I glanced at the car. Summer had her face pressed against the window. Her eyes were red, and she was staring straight at me.

Joseph sat beside her and handed her tissues.

I looked away. "That night, at my engagement party, where did you go after you got me drunk?"

Adam's expression changed. He didn't panic. His face simply went rigid, like someone who'd just been caught.

He opened his mouth, but several seconds passed before he spoke. "How did you know?"

"I didn't. I was guessing. Now I know."

His Adam's apple bobbed.

"It was an accident." His voice dropped. "You'd had too much to drink and went to sleep first. Summer came over to get something, and I'd been drinking too..."

"Are you going to tell me you didn't mean to?" I interjected sarcastically.

He said nothing.

His silence was answer enough.

Joseph got out of the car and stopped a few steps away. Somehow, he looked even worse than Adam. "I did too..."

"You did what? You didn't mean to either?"

He bit his lip.

"The night before you and Summer had the engagement party, I was having a hard time..." His voice was so quiet that the wind almost swallowed it. "I drank a lot. Summer came to see me because she was afraid I'd do something stupid."

His voice dropped even lower. "I always thought she wasn't good enough for you. I thought she didn't deserve you. But you got her anyway, and I couldn't take it. She stayed with me the whole time, and then..."

"Then you didn't mean to either," I finished for him.

Two men had been with my fiancée on two different nights. One had been with her at our engagement party, while the other had been with her the night before. What a coincidence.

The car door slammed behind me.

Summer got out. She steadied herself with one hand against the doorframe, and tears still streaked her face.

She walked straight toward me and dropped to her knees. "Anthony, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..."

Her knees struck the asphalt with a dull thud.

I looked down at her.

Adam immediately stepped forward and pulled her up. "The ground's cold. You're pregnant. Don't kneel."

Joseph reached for her other arm. "Summer, get up. This is our fault, not yours."

The two men stood on either side of her and shielded her between them.

Once they had helped her to her feet, Summer looked up at me with tears in her eyes. Fear and a plea for forgiveness filled her expression, along with something else I couldn't quite identify.

The wind picked up again. I stood across from the three of them and felt like an audience of one who had been forced to watch a play unfold.

Adam turned back to me, his voice low. "Anthony, get in the car. Let's go to the hotel first. Summer isn't feeling well. She can't stay out here in the wind."

I looked at him. Then I got in the car.

On the way to the hotel, Joseph handed me a thermos. "Anthony, have some water."

Wendy took the ring out of the box. A little dirt still clung to it."If you don't want it, you can keep the flower too. Consider it a gift from me," Wendy said.I held out my left hand. She slipped the ring onto my ring finger, and her fingers trembled slightly. Then she turned her face away. The tips of her ears were so red they looked ready to bleed.I smiled. It had been a long time since I'd smiled like that.…The wedding was simple. There were no signs or balloons. We just got married at City Hall. I wore a white shirt, and Wendy wore a sharp, tailored suit dress. My mom sobbed uncontrollably on the video call. My dad sat beside her and handed her tissues."What's there to cry about?" he asked. His eyes were red too. After we received our marriage certificate, Wendy took my hand outside City Hall. The sunlight was beautiful. Autumn had arrived, and the trees' leaves had begun to turn yellow.Wendy looked at me. "Anthony.""Hmm?""From now on, you're taking my last n

"Anthony, I'm sorry." Summer said the three words slowly, as though she had to drag each one from the back of her throat. "I'm not apologizing because I got caught. I'm apologizing because I never deserved to be your partner."I looked at her. The streetlight cast her shadow across the ground until it reached the base of the wall."The baby isn't Adam's. And it isn't Joseph's either," I said calmly. She nodded. "I know you know.""You knew from the beginning who the baby's father was," I noted. She fell silent for a moment. "Yes.""You knew the baby wasn't theirs, and you still dragged all of this into our honeymoon."She said nothing. The bouquet slipped from her hands and fell to the ground. One of the white rose petals crumpled beneath it."Anthony, could you give me one more chance—""No." My voice remained even, neither cold nor hateful. It was simply steady, like a wound that had already scabbed over and no longer hurt. "Pick up your things and go. Don't come here again.

"Then what happened?" I asked."After the baby was born, Adam had a paternity test done immediately. The day the results came back, he sat in the hallway outside the delivery room for six hours."I said nothing. Neither did Wendy. The salmon was incredibly fresh and practically melted in my mouth. After a while, she continued, "After Joseph found out the baby wasn't his, he left a comment on Summer's social media.""What did he say?""So all this time, you've been putting on an act."I set down my cutlery and took a sip of white wine. "What about him now?""He quit his job. Apparently, he went abroad. Before he left, he came to see me once and asked me to give you a letter," Wendy said. "Where is it?""In the car. Do you want to read it?"I thought for a moment. "No."Wendy nodded and poured more wine into my glass. "One more thing. Summer and Adam are completely done. She left with the baby.""Does she have somewhere to go?""She went back to her hometown. Apparently, h

"What?" I asked."The baby isn't Adam's. And it isn't Joseph's either," Wendy said.I looked up at her. She set down her can of soda without a change in expression. "I looked into it. The timeline doesn't add up. Summer was further along than she claimed. Both times she slept with Adam and Joseph fell outside her fertile window.""How did you find that out?""Her prenatal records." Wendy glanced at me. "Don't ask me how I got them."I leaned back in my chair and stared at the tiny green shoot emerging from the flowerpot. The gardenia had finally sprouted after more than a month."So the baby was never either of theirs to begin with," Wendy added."She lied to both of them." As soon as I said it, the whole situation struck me as absurd, like something out of a trashy TV drama. Except it was real."Are you angry?" Wendy asked.I thought about it. "No. I'm not."Those words felt different from the "It's fine" I'd always said before.Back then, "It's fine" meant swallowing my fe

"How did you...""Diane told me," Wendy said.My mother had promised not to tell anyone, only to turn around and tell Wendy. But I couldn't bring myself to be angry.Because the next thing Wendy said was, "She told me not to bother you. Just keep an eye on you from a distance. Only step in if you're in danger."When we reached my apartment, I took out my keys and unlocked the door.I turned around and found her standing in the hallway, with no intention of coming inside."You don't want to come in for a while?" I asked."It's late. Probably not a good idea.""You're like my sister."She fell silent for a moment before she smiled. It was different from the smiles she'd given me when we were kids. There was something in it I couldn't quite understand."I'll come see you tomorrow. Lock the door properly." She turned and headed downstairs, her footsteps fading with every step.I closed the door and leaned against it. The scrape on my arm burned. On the balcony, the gardenias I

The float valve in the toilet tank broke, and the water wouldn't stop running. I watched three tutorial videos, knelt on the bathroom floor, and spent half an hour working at it with a wrench. Eventually, I fixed it.The washing machine's drain hose started leaking. I bought some waterproof tape, wrapped it around the hose three times, and stopped the leak. The gasket in the kitchen faucet had worn out. I took the faucet apart, checked the model number, and went to the hardware store for a replacement.I'd handled things like this myself before, but there had always been someone around to lend a hand. When I lived at home, there was my father, my mother, and the housekeeper. After I got engaged to Summer, there was the property management office.Adam had once told me, "Call me if you need anything. Anytime."Joseph had been even more straightforward. "Bro, just say the word and I'll be there."But now, there was no one. And that was okay.I went to the market by myself to buy
