Chapter 6

Author: Washing Wheat
After sending the message, I turned my phone facedown in my palm. My hand was slick with sweat.

I went downstairs and walked out of the hotel.

The sea breeze hit me full in the face.

Mornings on the island were bright. Sunlight spilled across the beach in a dazzling white glow.

It was beautiful. I stood there alone and stared at the view for a long time.

…

Around noon, Adam sent me a message.

Adam: [Anthony, Summer says she wants a watermelon smoothie. Do you know if there's anywhere around here that sells them?]

I had spent the entire morning on a sofa in the hotel lobby, and my phone was almost dead.

I didn't reply.

Ten minutes later, another message came through.

Adam: [Where are you? Don't wander off by yourself.]

Five minutes later, Joseph called. "Where did you go? The front desk said you haven't been back to your room all morning."

"I'm in the lobby."

"Come upstairs. Summer isn't doing too well. She's been asking to see you."

…

I went upstairs. When I opened the door to the honeymoon suite, I found Summer half-reclining on the rose-petal-covered bed.

No one had cleared the petals away yet. Red and white petals lay scattered across the sheets. Summer rested against the pillows with a pregnancy guidebook open in front of her. I had no idea where she'd found it.

Adam sat in an armchair beside the bed and searched for something on his tablet. Joseph stood by the balcony door with his arms crossed.

The moment I walked in, Summer's eyes lit up. "Anthony! Where did you go? I've been looking for you forever."

She tried to sit up, but Adam immediately reached over to steady her. "Don't move. Let him come to you."

I walked over to the bed but remained standing.

Summer took my hand. Her fingers were cold. "Anthony, are you leaving?"

"What?"

"Are you planning to leave by yourself?" Her eyes reddened, and her chin began to tremble. "You didn't answer my messages or come back to the room all morning. I was scared..."

"No one's leaving," Adam said.

He looked at me. The concern in his voice now carried a distinct note of warning. "Anthony, if you're upset, you can say so. But you can't just run off by yourself. We're worried about you going out alone."

"What are you worried about?" I asked.

"This is an island. You don't know your way around," Adam reasoned.

"If I get lost, I can have Mike come pick me up. Assuming you don't cancel his trip."

He had no answer.

Joseph cut in, "Don't be stubborn. Adam was just worried things would get out of hand. It'd be even more complicated if your parents found out."

"So what?" I looked at all three of them. "What are you planning to do? Pretend none of this happened and keep going on our honeymoon together?"

No one spoke.

Summer's tears fell onto a withered rose petal on the sheets. "Anthony, maybe I should leave. I shouldn't have come. I was the one who insisted on coming. I thought I could pretend none of this had happened, but I can't..."

She threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed.

Adam placed a hand on her shoulder and stopped her. "You're pregnant. Where are you going?"

Joseph quickly stepped toward her. "Summer, don't do anything rash."

Tears streamed down her face as she pushed their hands away. "Just leave me alone. This is all because of me. Anthony's like this because of me..."

Both men looked at me at the same time, their eyes carrying the exact same expression. It wasn't guilt. It was a plea. They wanted me to be more understanding, stop digging into what had happened, and give in because Summer was pregnant.

Adam softened his voice. "Anthony, just calm down for now. Once we get home, I'll take responsibility for the baby, no matter whose it is. You're her husband. That won't change."

Wendy took the ring out of the box. A little dirt still clung to it."If you don't want it, you can keep the flower too. Consider it a gift from me," Wendy said.I held out my left hand. She slipped the ring onto my ring finger, and her fingers trembled slightly. Then she turned her face away. The tips of her ears were so red they looked ready to bleed.I smiled. It had been a long time since I'd smiled like that.…The wedding was simple. There were no signs or balloons. We just got married at City Hall. I wore a white shirt, and Wendy wore a sharp, tailored suit dress. My mom sobbed uncontrollably on the video call. My dad sat beside her and handed her tissues."What's there to cry about?" he asked. His eyes were red too. After we received our marriage certificate, Wendy took my hand outside City Hall. The sunlight was beautiful. Autumn had arrived, and the trees' leaves had begun to turn yellow.Wendy looked at me. "Anthony.""Hmm?""From now on, you're taking my last n

"Anthony, I'm sorry." Summer said the three words slowly, as though she had to drag each one from the back of her throat. "I'm not apologizing because I got caught. I'm apologizing because I never deserved to be your partner."I looked at her. The streetlight cast her shadow across the ground until it reached the base of the wall."The baby isn't Adam's. And it isn't Joseph's either," I said calmly. She nodded. "I know you know.""You knew from the beginning who the baby's father was," I noted. She fell silent for a moment. "Yes.""You knew the baby wasn't theirs, and you still dragged all of this into our honeymoon."She said nothing. The bouquet slipped from her hands and fell to the ground. One of the white rose petals crumpled beneath it."Anthony, could you give me one more chance—""No." My voice remained even, neither cold nor hateful. It was simply steady, like a wound that had already scabbed over and no longer hurt. "Pick up your things and go. Don't come here again.

"Then what happened?" I asked."After the baby was born, Adam had a paternity test done immediately. The day the results came back, he sat in the hallway outside the delivery room for six hours."I said nothing. Neither did Wendy. The salmon was incredibly fresh and practically melted in my mouth. After a while, she continued, "After Joseph found out the baby wasn't his, he left a comment on Summer's social media.""What did he say?""So all this time, you've been putting on an act."I set down my cutlery and took a sip of white wine. "What about him now?""He quit his job. Apparently, he went abroad. Before he left, he came to see me once and asked me to give you a letter," Wendy said. "Where is it?""In the car. Do you want to read it?"I thought for a moment. "No."Wendy nodded and poured more wine into my glass. "One more thing. Summer and Adam are completely done. She left with the baby.""Does she have somewhere to go?""She went back to her hometown. Apparently, h

"What?" I asked."The baby isn't Adam's. And it isn't Joseph's either," Wendy said.I looked up at her. She set down her can of soda without a change in expression. "I looked into it. The timeline doesn't add up. Summer was further along than she claimed. Both times she slept with Adam and Joseph fell outside her fertile window.""How did you find that out?""Her prenatal records." Wendy glanced at me. "Don't ask me how I got them."I leaned back in my chair and stared at the tiny green shoot emerging from the flowerpot. The gardenia had finally sprouted after more than a month."So the baby was never either of theirs to begin with," Wendy added."She lied to both of them." As soon as I said it, the whole situation struck me as absurd, like something out of a trashy TV drama. Except it was real."Are you angry?" Wendy asked.I thought about it. "No. I'm not."Those words felt different from the "It's fine" I'd always said before.Back then, "It's fine" meant swallowing my fe

"How did you...""Diane told me," Wendy said.My mother had promised not to tell anyone, only to turn around and tell Wendy. But I couldn't bring myself to be angry.Because the next thing Wendy said was, "She told me not to bother you. Just keep an eye on you from a distance. Only step in if you're in danger."When we reached my apartment, I took out my keys and unlocked the door.I turned around and found her standing in the hallway, with no intention of coming inside."You don't want to come in for a while?" I asked."It's late. Probably not a good idea.""You're like my sister."She fell silent for a moment before she smiled. It was different from the smiles she'd given me when we were kids. There was something in it I couldn't quite understand."I'll come see you tomorrow. Lock the door properly." She turned and headed downstairs, her footsteps fading with every step.I closed the door and leaned against it. The scrape on my arm burned. On the balcony, the gardenias I

The float valve in the toilet tank broke, and the water wouldn't stop running. I watched three tutorial videos, knelt on the bathroom floor, and spent half an hour working at it with a wrench. Eventually, I fixed it.The washing machine's drain hose started leaking. I bought some waterproof tape, wrapped it around the hose three times, and stopped the leak. The gasket in the kitchen faucet had worn out. I took the faucet apart, checked the model number, and went to the hardware store for a replacement.I'd handled things like this myself before, but there had always been someone around to lend a hand. When I lived at home, there was my father, my mother, and the housekeeper. After I got engaged to Summer, there was the property management office.Adam had once told me, "Call me if you need anything. Anytime."Joseph had been even more straightforward. "Bro, just say the word and I'll be there."But now, there was no one. And that was okay.I went to the market by myself to buy
