Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Honeyed Habit
Because of everything that happened, we didn't make it to Mom's for the holiday. She called me to ask why, and the moment she heard I was getting a divorce, she tore into me.

"Are you stupid? At your age? You think you're still young and good-looking? Whatever you did wrong, go apologize and fix it."

I could barely get the words out without choking up. "Renee cheated on me with some young guy."

Mom went quiet for a second, but it didn't last. "How useless do you have to be for your own wife to cheat on you?"

I hung up. It was nothing but insults with her, and it always had been. She'd divorced my father for the same thing, yet she couldn't spare me an ounce of sympathy.

I knew why. It was because she favored my younger sister, Megan Gallagher. Renee was a powerful woman in business and could hand Megan a cushy position whenever she pleased.

My whole life, I'd bent over backward trying to make everyone happy. But this time, Mom was just going to have to be disappointed.

She called Renee next. I don't know what they talked about, but when Renee called me back, the disgust in her voice was barely concealed. "You'd better keep your mother in line. If she comes stirring up trouble, don't expect me to play nice."

Then she added something quieter, almost under her breath, but I still caught it. "I'm so sick of nepotism hires."

My blood ran cold. When I'd first made up my mind to cut ties with my family, it was precisely because I didn't want them leeching off me. I didn't want Renee to look down on me for it.

But Renee had cupped my face in her hands and told me, over and over, "If it gives you peace, let them take what they need. I'm doing this because I want to."

So even though I'd tried my hardest to keep my family at arm's length and had been ready to cut them off for good, she'd gone behind my back and brought them into the company anyway.

I was furious. She just winked at me, playful as ever. "One little favor buys you peace and quiet. It's totally worth it. Don't be mad.

"What kind of person doesn't want anything to do with his own birth family? I don't want you looking back with regret someday."

So whenever Megan screwed up, Renee covered for her, and in return, I got to stand tall at family gatherings. During those years, I got a taste of what it felt like to have a mother who actually loved me and a family that felt like one, even if none of it was real.

I was happy, despite knowing that they'd only come around because of what they could get. But now, Megan was the nepotism hire. And Renee wasn't wrong.

The thing was, I'd never wanted any of it.

That generous heart of hers hadn't changed at all. She still gave the same way she always had. Only now, it was toward someone else. I learned from Mom that Renee had brought Thomas' entire family into the company.

His father, who could barely hold down a job, had been handed a management title. Their combined salary was double what Megan earned.

The pain in my chest came in waves, and I couldn't help but laugh at myself. The problem was never the nepotism. The problem was me.

Every ounce of strength drained from my body. I lay on the floor staring at nothing, wondering how someone I loved that much could just become a stranger.

After the crying was done and the exhaustion set in, I dusted off my résumé and started looking for work, even if it meant starting from the very bottom. Pretty words only worked while you still bought into them.

Renee and Piper came home. She spotted my résumé and looked mildly surprised. "Nobody's forcing you to work. You don't have to."

Piper always took her mother's side, and this time was no different. "Yeah, Dad. What else can you even do besides sit around the house? Just listen to Mom."

Nobody remembered that it was Renee who talked me into being a stay-at-home husband. Nobody knew I'd given it all up so she could chase her dreams. Nobody saw any of what I'd done.

I stared at the two of them, frozen, and something inside me finally snapped. "Enough. What I do with my life is none of your concern."

I wasn't interested in Renee's declaration. I filed for divorce anyway. Her affair with Thomas had been so public that there was a trail a mile wide. Every piece of evidence was already out in the open, and I didn't have to dig for any of it.Piper didn't want to let go. "Dad, stepdads are always mean to kids. Are you really giving up on me?"I smiled bitterly and sent her on her way. "Between the two of us, you were the one who gave up first."During the waiting period, Renee didn't come looking for me. Not because she didn't want to, but because she had her hands full. Thomas had dropped the act entirely and was hounding her for answers."You're the one who got us used to this lifestyle. You told my family to quit their jobs and work for you, yet they're now all unemployed. You can't just throw us away like that."Renee thought that she'd already been more than generous. "Your family caused disaster after disaster and cost me a fortune. You should be grateful I'm not coming aft

Renee refused to believe it. "You're just testing me. I'll prove myself to you."I couldn't be bothered to respond. The moment I was well enough, I hired a lawyer to finalize the divorce. Then Renee sent Piper to me. It had only been a few days, but she looked worn out. She ran to me crying."Dad! Dad!"Before all this, I would have caved in a heartbeat. I never would have let her suffer like that. But now, I just stood there. I couldn't understand how she'd been capable of not feeling a shred of sympathy for me. The reward points she could never bring herself to redeem, she'd handed every last one to Thomas without a second thought.Piper followed me around, sobbing apologies. "I'm sorry, Dad. I don't want Mr. Thomas anymore. He said if I stayed with him, I could eat whatever I wanted and do whatever I wanted."I stood there, stunned. So that was the reason.Piper had grown up a lot in a short time. She was starting to see it on her own. "But I know Mr. Thomas doesn't actually

Thomas froze. Tears clung to his lashes as he struggled to get the words out. "You..."But Renee didn't wait. She approved every single termination in one go. When the HR staff member got the news, the woman actually came to confirm the decision in person."Seriously?" She couldn't hide her delight and rushed off to process the paperwork. But Thomas' relatives weren't going quietly. They stormed in one after another, demanding an explanation. "On what grounds? Our son is involved with your boss. Who do you think you are, coming to us with this?"Thomas, still in his office, finally realized that Renee wasn't bluffing. He backed down, saying, "Renee, I didn't mean it like that. I'll make them shape up."He thought he was making a huge concession, but Renee wasn't having it. She'd made up her mind. The whole family had to go.She was sick of it. Everyone in the company had been suffering in silence, fully aware they were all nepotism hires. Now that she had a reason and the words w

Neither Renee nor Piper felt right without William there. Piper spoke up in that sweet little voice of hers."Mom, maybe don't divorce Dad. Mr. Thomas can just be on the side."Renee's influence had already warped the way Piper saw things, but her words still landed exactly where Renee intended. She'd never actually wanted a divorce. She wanted both.Everyone around her was leaving their spouses, tossing them aside for someone new. She hadn't gone that far. But William wouldn't accept the arrangement and insisted on making it a whole thing.Fine. She would let him throw his tantrum. Renee told herself that and left it there.Because right now, she was certain that she didn't want a divorce. So, she tore up the agreement. She hadn't had a drink in a while. But she still couldn't stop herself from lighting a cigarette. Thomas had asked her to quit, and she'd been trying for his sake.William had nagged her about it plenty of times, too, but she never listened. She always promised

[Third-Person POV]Renee didn't come home until the holidays were over, and it was time for work and school to start again. She pushed through the front door and called out for William without thinking."Get me a glass of water. I'm dying. I was screaming along with them all night. God, I'm getting old. I can't keep up with those two anymore."But no matter how many times she called, the house stayed silent, empty in a way it hadn't been before. An ominous feeling flickered through her. She suddenly remembered William's call from five days ago and shot to her feet.Renee searched the entire villa, top to bottom, but there was still no sign of him. She let out a breath of relief, but it quickly curdled into anger."Always making a production out of everything. I knew it was all an act."She grabbed her phone and called him several times in a row, but there was still no answer. That only made her angrier, and she tossed the phone aside. "Fine. Don't come back then."She picked i

That evening, Renee came home furious, dragging Piper behind her. The girl's eyes were swollen red from crying.Renee demanded, "Don't you think you owe me an explanation?"My hands froze over the things I was packing. I couldn't think of what there was to explain. She then grabbed my arm and hauled me into the study."Piper was crying at school because of you. Even Thomas felt terrible. I knew it. I knew the whole gracious divorce act was fake. You went behind my back and made a scene at the school, airing everything out on purpose."Listening to her pile accusations on me, all I felt was cold. Years of love, and this was the version of me she had settled on.Maybe she'd never cared enough to see me any differently. So what was the point of defending myself?"Believe whatever you want. It's not like you care about people knowing that you cheated."Renee was livid. Then, Megan got fired. Renee could dispose of my entire family as easily as brushing dirt off her sleeve. Mom we
