A Demon Or A Witch?

EIGHTEEN YEARS LATER

As the tall trees swayed to the rhythm of the wind, the door of an old dilapidated house creaked noisily.

The giant mountain backed by the whitish blue blanket up in the sky shows off its magnificent glory. The little birds cuddle together as they chirp words known to them alone.

The chirping of the Sparkling Violetear bird resounds in the old rustic room where a beautiful girl lay as she yawns loudly.

Helena turned to look at the bird with a smile that lightened up the crusty room.

"It's a beautiful day, Blue. I wanted to sleep longer but your sonorous music this morning woke me up. I almost thought I was back as a princess" She whispered to the bird.

"You are so pretty but I am prettier"

As if in disagreement, the bird's chirping became fierce.

" Tlik… tlik…tlik..tlik "

"Of course I am prettier than you. Don't be jealous, alright?"

Helena got out of the cranky worn-out bed slowly and sneakily. She chuckled lightly at the bird who was looking at her. She really wanted to touch this gorgeous bird even if it was once.

The sparkling Violetear was mostly found in her hut because of the different flowers she planted all over the compound. They fed on the nectar while guarding it away from the other hummingbirds.

She loved the bird for its colourful body. The upper part of the bird was metallic bluish in color with a bluish violet chin and a blue belly. In fact the bird was made of blue.

That's why she named it blue. She continued sneaking closer to Blue but just a few steps from it, the bird flew away with an arrogant chin.

Helena looked at the bird flying away. She wished it could just allow her to touch it just once. Though she looked disappointed.

After she freshened up, the eighteen year old Helena sat down at the long bench, holding her chin up with the help of her left hand. Her perfectly arched brows were scrunched up as she was in deep thought.

She looked alluring and exotic. Even as a peasant, her tattered clothes could not hide the ethereal beauty on her supple skin.

Her eyes were the perfect shade of dark blue in contrast with her snowy color hair. Her eyes have the shape of an almond while her high cheekbones and full pouty lips bring out the attraction in her heart shaped face.

Those bluish molten lava eyes were glued to nothing in particular but the sparkles in those eyes could never be missed.

As she got up from the chair, a familiar piercing voice rang out behind her.

"Helly! Did you forget we were supposed to meet at the Pack's square more than an hour ago?"

Helena looked up to see her bosom friend, Bita, with an annoyed face. She stuck out her tongue and hit her head slightly indicating she had forgotten. She thought Bita was supposed to come to her place instead.

Bita shook her head and glared at her friend. She wonders what was always running through her mind that she forgets so easily.

It's not that surprising to see Helena staring at the space for more than an hour with those beautiful but scary bluish molten lava eyes.

The Pack members always keep a distance from her for reasons best known to them. Some claimed she's a witch while others claim she was a demon in hiding.

You know, those types of rejected demons. Those ones that are half human half demons? Yeah, that's what the villagers thought she was.

No one ever attributed her to a werewolf because she had never shifted. She was supposed to shift on her sixteenth birthday. Another strange thing was her aura. It didn't belong to any werewolf tribe.

Weird enough, she had been living alone after her parents were killed by rogues at the age of seven. She lived alone and never once had the help of the pack members to look after her.

Bita had met her crying after the death of her parents. She was all alone bawling her eyes out. She felt pity on Helena and went to meet her despite the fact that the other pups around refused to play with her. They were both seven years old then.

"Why are you crying?"

"I…I…am hungry"

"Oh…where is your momma and papa?"

"My momma and papa left me"

"Why?"

"I don't know. They were taken by those scary monsters"

"Just wait. I will bring food from my momma and we will eat together, okay?"

"Really?"

"Yes. Don't cry. My name is Bita. And I will be your friend"

"I am Helena. Thank you for being my friend"

That's how they became friends but the Pack members always scorn her for being friends with the strange girl. Even her parents couldn't understand but nonetheless, they did not stop their friendship.

All she knew was, Helena was her best friend and she was one of a kind. She was like a free but tied spirit who wants to soar higher but whose wings have been clipped together.

As for the rumors that she was not a werewolf, Bita believes Helen was just a late bloomer.

"Let's go before everyone leaves the square. Do you remember the Prince is supposed to take a chosen mate in two weeks time? You know he has been without a mate for a long time now. That's the purpose of the gathering at the square. We have to practice our dance steps to present that day"

"Selection of bride? And you want me to go? Bita, have you forgotten who the Pack members think I am? They are lenient enough to leave me alive and you want me to go and fight for a public position of a princess cum Luna-to-be? "

"I just wanted you to be treated equally for once. It's not your fault that you were born with those eyes or your parents got killed…just forget it. Let's go to our usual spot before night falls"

"Okay B. Let me just get ready so I can get some wood too," Helen said as she dashed into her room to change.

They chatted along the bushy path that leads to the forest with cheerful laughter. After some time, they stopped at a huge fallen tree.

Bita took out some stones as Helen dug about twelve holes on the ground. She filled the holes with four stones each. They squatted down to start playing the game.

After about ten rounds Bita came out victorious. She started dancing and laughing at Helen who was a little sad. Helen was staring daggers at her friend.

"You always choose a game you are good at. That's why you always win against me"

"Really? Okay, tell me what you can do best"

Helen doesn't know how to play any game. She has been separated from people in the Pack all her life after the death of her parents except for Binta. They claimed she was a bad Omen because of her eyes.

Yes, her eyes. They were a deep shade of blue with golden dots that looked like molten lava all around the pupil, making it look like the eyes were covered with blue in the middle of a volcano. Because of those eyes the villagers wondered if she was a demon or witch.

But deep down she knew who she was and time was running out. She has a reason for coming to the mortal realm. And she has to fulfill it before the set time or she might lose it all.

Although the villagers never knew who she was, she never had the intention of revealing her identity.

Was she really what they thought she was?
