Chapter thirty-two - Nathan
Millie Deane was with Leanna when she lost her phone yesterday. Millie Deane supposedly found Leanna's lost phone and gave it back just before the party. Millie Deane put 'her' number in Max's phone yesterday.
Somehow in the last twenty-four hours, both Leanna and Max have had phone numbers altered so they weren't aware they were texting each other.
Max thinks it was Millie, everything is pointing at Millie being the culprit, maybe for everything, but Leanna's covering for her. Is it just because she's her best friend and she doesn't want to think she's capable of that? Because I'm starting to feel a bit pissed at the girl myself.
Leanna tries to let my hand go so she can comfort her friend, but I hold on more firmly and she tugs me forward to stand beside her, in solidarity with Millie as she glares

Rumours about me and Max were all over school this week and the stupid boyfriend poll has returned with Max as the overwhelming leader. I really thought it would have died down by now and I hate it. The schools response was to hire some bullying company to do little acted sketches in the hall, showing how 'uncool' it is to be a bully, which might have worked had we been eight instead of eighteen, but it was cringeworthy. It's awkward as anything between Max and me, so I'm avoiding him and going the long route to my classes, which he must have thought too, since I'm seeing him everywhere. "Leanna." He calls my name just before lunch and pulls me into a classroom. "Max, what are you doing?" I ask, glancing around in case anyone is watching us.

Leanna's got her friends staying with her tonight which is good, they'll help keep her mind off of everything that's going on. I headed over to Adam's with Callum after football and it was good, nice and chilled, no texts, no messages, nothing from our crazy stalker. It's late when I leave, dropping Callum at his on the way home. About half a mile from home, I hear a bang and the car starts to veer wildly on the road. Skidding to a stop I see the tyre's blown but as I turn to get the spare, something slams into the side of my face, knocking me off my feet and onto the ground. I cradle my head as blow after painful blow rains down on me and I must have blacked out because the next thing I know, Jake's calling my name, telling me not to move and that he's called an ambulance. Time whizzes by in a blur, I'm given something for pain which is wonderful and makes me feel sort of drunk. "Hi Leanna, do you want to come and get Nathan's car, it's all fixed. I can pick you up?" Max says as soon as I answer the phone. "Yeah sure, that'll be great, thank you, Max, you've been amazing." "Great, give me five minutes." I grab my jacket and head outside to wait for him. Telling my parents what I'm doing and that I'll be back soon. Max pulls up in a little silver Vauxhall, which I know isn't his car since he's always talking about what he's been doing to his little lime green Citroen. With its garish colour, blacked out windows and the spoiler on the back it's a car fit for any proud boy racer, whereas this car looks like one my parents would drive, boring and totally not something I expected to see Max in. It feels like forever for the police to arrive, in the meantime I've tried to ring Leanna god knows how many times but it's gone straight to answerphone each time and Jake's called Kim who's confirmed that Leanna left to meet Max around eleven and hasn't been back since, even though she said she was just picking up my car for me and would probably only be about an hour. "So, what makes you think Max is the person who attacked you?" The police officer asks, sipping on tea in the Carlisle living room as though Leanna hasn't been missing for hours. "He told me Jake disturbed the attacker which was why my injuries weren't worse. Jake said he never told anyone that." I wake up in a soft white bed, warm light streaming in through the windows and my body feels incredibly heavy, as though it's not woken up yet. It takes a while to work out where I am, but then the memories flood back in and I bolt upright, looking around for Max, but there’s no one else here. Stepping out of bed, I shudder when I see my clothing neatly folded on the chair in the corner, looking down and realising someone changed me into some pajamas while I was sleeping. I quickly change back, throwing the pajamas onto the bed behind me and open the bedroom door. The house is so quiet, that, as soon as I open the door I can hear movement downstairs, the steady bubble of water boiling and Max whistling a tune from the room below. The scent of toast cooking has me salivating despite my predicament, even though it's clearly burnt. As soon as Leanna hangs up, I check the phone for a number, but it was withheld. She was trying to tell me where she is, I know she was, but it's not a lot to go on, a cottage, half a mile from a river and a road nearby. But she did say he was in a Vauxhall, that might help the police, so I call the direct number the police gave me and relay the information to the officer, who thanks me and reassures me I did the right thing by telling them.As though I might have considered keeping this information to myself.Hushed voices downstairs let me know my parents are home, so I run downstairs and tell them about the phone call. My parents are furious with me, Leanna's parents were furious with me, I'm pretty sure if I hadn't brought Leanna home after nearly three full days of not knowing where the hell she was, I'd have been being grounded, lectured and they'd be thinking up new punishments for me for weeks. All because I went off to rescue Leanna without taking them or even telling them where we were going, not directly anyway and I hadn't stopped long enough to actually tell Millie where we were heading so they could even follow us. They had to wait at home, helplessly, praying that we would all be ok.My only other saving grace is that I at least called the police and let them know where we were heading and what we anticipated on arrival. Jake saw the trouble I was in, so thankfully didn't mention it was him that called them, it hadn't even crossed my mind, I was too focused on getting to Leanna.
