Chapter 1

“Ms. Zoeller, honestly, your secret romance with him is so enviable. Now that the baby has even passed their one-month mark, it’s worth celebrating.

“None of the other students even know that you two have been together for the past three years. You’ve really kept him under wraps.”

My wife, Shiloh, laughed cheerfully with her students.

Three years, huh?

The news devastated me. I felt hollow, and my heart ached.

Just then, I received a message from her.

[Honey, I still have to handle some matters at the university. After you land, just grab a cab and head home, okay?]

Home? It seemed like the university was just as much of a home to her.

The students began playing with the baby in her arms. Shiloh said the child’s name was Conrad.

My heartache worsened. That was the name she and I had chosen together for our future child.

“Honey, I want a little boy. He’ll be as smart and sharp as you. I don’t mind it if he’s a little troublemaker.”

“Okay then, Conrad it is. He’ll be as gentle as his mother, and hopefully life treats him well.”

All these years, Shiloh had been busy helping batch after batch of students revise their theses, preparing lectures, and going on study trips.

I, on the other hand, remained at home to care for my bedridden father-in-law year-round.

Every time I traveled to this city to see her, I had to leave him with a temporary caretaker when his condition was at its best.

We barely had any time together as husband and wife.

The child I had hoped for never came. Meanwhile, her child with another man had already turned one month old.

“I just learned this too. It turns out that you’re the one giving him nearly two thousand five hundred dollars a month for living expenses. That’s some serious spending!

A male student’s teasing pulled me back to my senses.

I clenched my fists so hard that the knuckles cracked loudly.

Back then, to help her get the job she wanted at Harbor University, I agreed to live apart after much careful thought.

She felt guilty about it and sent me almost all of her monthly paycheck which amounted to eight thousand dollars.

The amount gradually dwindled. She claimed it was a department decision and that professors were getting pay cuts across the board.

I felt bad for her, so I started pinching pennies and cutting every expense. I spent no more than four hundred dollars a month on myself.

Evidently, she had long been using that money to support another family in comfort.

Shiloh gently wrapped her arms around the man’s waist.

“Easton, it’s getting chilly. Let’s all head upstairs.”

“Alright, Ms. Zoeller!”

He held her waist happily, which drew a round of teasing from the crowd.

I was in complete shock.

So, he was Easton Goodson.

Shiloh often mentioned him, intentionally or not. She said he was a clumsy troublemaker.

He would send me holiday greetings and call me “bro” in a friendly way.

He was also the only student who knew Shiloh and I were married.

I often cared about him and texted him, telling him not to take Shiloh’s bad temper to heart.

It turned out I had been a fool all along.

Just as everyone was about to head upstairs, Shiloh glanced back and accidentally caught sight of me.

The smile on her face vanished instantly.

Shiloh knew she should stop talking. She walked over to stand before my mother’s portrait with the flower in her arms.“Dolores, it’s all because I was such a terrible person that you died like this.”She sniffled.“I’m going to make things right. I’ll take better care of Cillian. I won’t let him suffer anymore.”She started sobbing and apologized repeatedly.“That’s the cheating professor. The one who slept with her own student.”“Mrs. Jaques died because of her and that homewrecker. She was such a wonderful woman. How could they do this?”“How does she even have the nerve to show up at the funeral? Cillian is such a good guy. He used to be a real catch. But with her, he ended up being treated like a servant.”Bruce could no longer listen. He pointed angrily at the door.“What are you doing here? Get lost now!“Cillian is going to divorce you. I’m holding you fully accountable for what happened to Dolores. So don’t stand there pretending to be sorry.”Shiloh’s eyes welled u

Cillian's POVBack at the Jaques family’s mansion, everything remained unchanged. The maid, Catherine, who once took care of me, had gray hair. Tears filled her eyes when she saw me.“Cillian, Mr. Jaques has talked about you all these years. He’s even worried himself sick over it.”I lowered my gaze and smiled bitterly.“Wasn’t he cold and heartless when he abandoned my mom and me back then? What good is regret that comes this late?”I touched the cold cremation urn.“She’s not even here anymore...”Catherine patted my shoulder and spoke about my mother.“The truth is, Mr. Jaques has always regretted not keeping Mrs. Jaques. Within just a year, he divorced that other woman. He has never looked at another woman after that.“When she passed away, Mr. Jaques nearly ended up in the hospital when he heard the news. That just shows he really did love your mother.”I was only five years old when my father abandoned my mother and me.Back then, the words I heard my mother say most

“The video is... real?”Shiloh froze. Her voice was trembling.“Right now, the top priority is the online backlash. Someone pointed out that you cheated with a male student, had his baby, and ended up causing your mother-in-law’s death. The school is losing its mind trying to handle it.“If this isn’t handled properly, your career might be over. On top of that, Easton might not even graduate.”Easton started to panic.“Shiloh, what am I supposed to do? I worked hard for four years. I don’t want to walk away without a degree.“In this situation, you definitely can’t come clean about your relationship with him. Otherwise, you won’t even be able to stay at the school either...”The posts circulating online all pointed out that Shiloh had cheated with Easton and had a child together. The person responsible for Dolores’ fall from the building was also directly accusing the two of them.Shiloh was clearly panicking as well.“Is Cillian behind all this?“But that’s not like him. He

Third-Person POVAt the same time, Shiloh was in the hospital room taking care of the frightened Easton.Just then, the university called her.“Ms. Zoeller, check your phone right now. There’s a video of you online that’s already gone completely viral!”It was surveillance footage from near the psychiatric hospital.Shiloh frowned and clicked on the video link.In the footage, Dolores fell from a height of over ninety-eight floors and landed in a twisted posture. She landed directly on top of a car. The scene was horrifying.“H-How is this even possible?”Shiloh’s face turned pale. The sounds of sirens and rescue efforts in the video gradually became muffled in her ears.“Didn’t she just take you hostage a minute ago? How could she suddenly fall from the building?”Easton, who was lying in a hospital bed, glanced at it and pretended to be frightened.“Exactly. She was trying to stab me with a knife just now. Besides, Cillian was in the room too. There’s no way something li

“Mrs. Jaques, this is Shiloh’s and my baby.“I heard you were in the hospital, so I brought him all the way here to see you. This is your grandchild.”My mother stared at the child blankly and yanked at her own hair desperately.Easton ignored her condition completely. The more he spoke, the more excited he became.“Mom!”I rushed over to calm my mother down. I shouted at Easton, “My mom can’t handle any stress. Get out of here right now unless you want something bad to happen!”Seeing me, Easton showed no fear at all. Instead, he grew even more smug.“I’m just trying to be nice, Cillian. It’s not like you two have kids anyway. You can be Conrad’s godfather. We’re all going to be family sooner or later.“Shiloh has already promised me that I’ll be part of the family.”My mother grew more agitated when she heard this. My heart was racing with panic.“Who wants your kid? Take him away now!”At the next second, my mother broke free from my arms. She took a knife and held Easton

At the graduation ceremony, everyone focused on Shiloh and Easton.“I heard Ms. Zoeller had Easton’s kid. But hey, they’re both single. They actually make a cute couple.”“They’re probably getting married soon, right? Easton graduates today. The next time we see them, it’ll be to toast at their wedding!”While I sat in a corner and listened, I realized that Shiloh had never mentioned her married status to anyone. Was I so embarrassing to her that she could not even bring herself to say it?Easton, wearing his graduation gown, did not hesitate to wrap his arm around Shiloh’s waist in front of the cameras. He looked just like a husband in a long-term marriage.Cheers erupted from the audience.“Propose to her already!”Easton soaked it all in. He stared at me in the audience with a smug smile.Meanwhile, Shiloh seemed to have forgotten she was married. She looked at Easton with doting eyes, like a girl in the throes of first love.I could no longer stand the absurd scene. I st
