Chapter 3 From Love to Ruin

Author: Tonya Hugh
After he stayed, Finn always seemed uneasy, a trace of fear hidden in his eyes. I smiled and reassured him, telling him this was his home too. He gripped my hand, visibly moved. "Thank you, Ian. You treat me better than my parents ever did. I'll work hard and repay you one day."

I laughed and lightly punched his shoulder, then took the initiative to teach him the ropes of the company. I helped him dress better, guided him into high society, and even stepped in to solve problems for him whenever he ran into trouble.

I thought that with one more person around, my wife would have it easier. I genuinely wanted him to do well.

And he did. He gradually became more articulate and confident. When I took him out, I often introduced him as my brother from another mother.

Sadie began to change too. The gifts she bought slowly became two sets instead of one. She started talking to him more, even acting spoiled with him occasionally.

Finn would hover around her, smiling as he picked up her words, sometimes saying with a hint of grievance that he admired people like her. Without hesitation, Sadie brought him into the company and personally taught him, step by step.

A woman who had always valued efficiency above all else suddenly became unusually patient. Patient to the point of excess.

I could not help reminding her, but she only said, "It's good that he's motivated. We can't hold him back. He's one of us anyway, so it doesn't hurt to guide him more. In the future, I'll have more time to spend with you. Don't worry. This is just work. I promise you're the only one I love."

But the two of them began spending more and more time at the company.

Sadie had always worked hard, so I asked Finn to take good care of her. I even took it upon myself to handle their meals.

Finn said Sadie was lucky to have me.

Sadie said she wished she never had to work again, that she only wanted to cling to me for the rest of her life.

Then the video surfaced online—on the office windowsill, Sadie was pinned beneath Finn.

I ran to the company like a madman, bursting into the office with a spatula still in my hand. I grabbed her chin, my grip trembling with rage. "Sadie, how could you do this to me? How could you betray me?"

The veins on my forehead bulged as I shouted, spittle flying. And yet, she was still trying to bite Finn's ear, not even sparing me a glance.

"You possessive lunatic," she sneered. "Where's the man you used to be? Finn's mortified. If you keep making a scene, how's he supposed to stand his ground in the company? You have no shame, but he still needs his!"

The day before, I was still the love of her life. Now, she was nothing more than trash she wanted to get rid of.

I slammed her against the wall. "Do you two have no shame at all? The scandal and those intimate photos are everywhere!"

To my dismay, she clicked her tongue impatiently and shoved me away.

Hot liquid spilled onto me, and pain shot through the side of my face. For a moment, I could barely hear properly.

"Do you not understand plain words?" she snapped. "What are you doing, causing trouble here instead of clearing Finn's name? What else can you do besides bully him?"

Finn let out a soft sigh and pulled her into his arms, soothing her. "It's okay… It doesn't matter if Ian hates me. I just hope that you still care about me, Sadie. And Ian… If hitting me will make you feel better, go ahead. I won't fight back."

My fists clenched, trembling.

But Sadie had people drag me out in front of everyone.

I made a scene, determined to let everyone know they were backstabbers. I even spent a fortune hiring people online to expose every ugly thing about them.

But in less than a day, the scandal disappeared.

Everything returned to calm, as if nothing had happened.

Sadie held a press conference and calmly declared that I was insane. "My partner has been mentally unstable. He often shows hostility toward Finn and has repeatedly cursed him in private. But considering the Corbett family's past kindness to me, I won't abandon him."

Corbett Co. became Knight Co.

She fabricated evidence, accused me of framing Finn, and even used my account to apologize to him. Finn magnanimously said he did not mind, that the truth would speak for itself.

But when we returned home, she stepped on my stomach with her heels and smashed my fingers with a hammer, warning me never to touch him again. She forced my head down, making me kneel and apologize to Finn, admitting that I had tarnished his reputation.

She had even arranged a place to send me—a psychiatric hospital.

But then she found out she was pregnant with my child. I begged her to keep it. I even promised I would never cause trouble again.

Under the dim light, she stayed silent for a long time, as if weighing something. Then, she finally relented and gently wrapped her arms around me. "Ian… let's stop fighting. Let's just make a life of it."

After that day, they finally seemed to calm down. The arguments stopped.I could not walk anymore. I lay in bed, watching the sun rise and set, every breath laced with pain.Ethan would sneak in and kiss me, especially on my stubble, while Sadie posted our old marriage certificate. She wrote a long explanation, laying out everything from beginning to end, admitting every mistake she had made.Finn, on the other hand, was dealt with completely. Whether he was still alive or not, I did not know, nor did I have the strength to care. She sold the company and gave me all the money. I simply donated it all to an orphanage. The days passed in silence. In my haze, I thought I saw my mother. She had come to take me home."Mom…""Ian, don't sleep. Wake up…" Sadie gripped my hand tightly. She had seemingly aged years in an instant.I blinked slowly. "I see my mother. She's here to take me away."She shook her head frantically. "No. No, don't. You hate me, don't you? Get better… get bett

When I woke again, the sun was already setting. Outside the window, the sky was washed in a deep orange glow.Their story was trending online again. This time, along with it came even more explicit photos. Someone had sent them to me anonymously with a text and a video attached.'They look so happy together. Like the real thing. Far more natural than when she was in bed with you.'I opened the video without any reaction. It was no different from what I had seen before."Ian! Don't watch that!" Sadie rushed in, the audio from the phone still playing. She snatched it from my hands, trying to turn it off but failing. In the end, she threw it out the window, her voice trembling with desperation. "Don't look. I'll handle it. Please…"I gave a quiet hum, not particularly bothered. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me, repeating over and over, "Trust me. Please trust me."She leaned in to kiss me, but instinctively, I turned my head away. She froze for a moment, biting he

She staggered back, clutching the wall for support. "So back then… it could have been treated, right? It could have been cured. Why didn't you tell me then?"It could have been treated, yes. I just did not want to. I did not want to hear her spit those cruel words at me or hear my own child urging me to die. And… I missed my mother. She lunged forward and buried herself against me, clinging tightly. "It's okay… It's okay. You'll get better. You will."But my mind was already falling apart. The illness worsened quickly. Sadie nearly lost her mind, dragging me from city to city, country to country, searching for the best hospitals and the best doctors. But the results were always the same. She cried in the hallways. Doctors and nurses praised her, calling her a devoted wife. Only I found it laughable. She was so devoted that she could sleep with someone else while pregnant, wanted to send me to a psychiatric hospital, even went as far as to ruin my hands. And now, she was putting

  • No Longer Ours   Chapter 7 A Grave Beside Her

Over the past few years, I asked myself the same question again and again. Had I really done something so unforgivable that I deserved to end up like this? But I had not done anything at all.I had been exceptional since childhood—someone everyone envied. And yet now, I did not even dare to close my eyes.I was afraid that even in my dreams, those nightmares would still chase me.…Early the next morning, I went to the cemetery and bought the plot next to my mother's. I bent down to wipe her headstone, but the more I wiped, the more exhausted I became, until I finally sank down beside it, too weak to keep going."Mom, I miss you so much. Wait for me. It won't be long."Was she crying somewhere in the sky too? Did she regret agreeing to everything back then?My mother had been decisive and formidable at the company, yet she had saved all her gentleness for me. She used to hold my hand and say, "Ian, my love, you will only live a good life in the future. You won't have to suffer w

  • No Longer Ours   Chapter 6 Love That Came Too Late

I found myself dazed. She used to call me that whenever I was upset. I could not even remember how long it had been since the last time. Somewhere along the way, the way she addressed me had changed—lunatic, possessive freak, psycho. She pulled me into the car, kissed me forcefully, and said she was taking me home. Her gaze swept across the small apartment before she wrapped her arms around my waist. "You live here? You'd rather stay here and suffer than come find me? Or are you just trying to spite me? You know I can't bear to see you like this…"I stepped back subtly and met her eyes, my tone flat. "No. I'm doing just fine."She pressed her lips together, then grabbed my chin and turned my face toward her. "Just fine? What part of this looks fine? Your damaged fingers? Or this miserable life? Ian, you're clearly not doing well. Why are you still pretending in front of me?"I turned slightly, staring out the window, every muscle in my body tense. "Sadie, I'm satisfied with this

Sadie would not give me any money, so I could not even make it to the hospital.I did not know how many days I had lain at home before Ethan came. For a moment, I thought I was imagining things. He stood in front of me, holding a cup of water, his eyes lowered. "D-Dad…"I thought it was an illusion when he handed me a cup of water. "Drink."I believed him without hesitation and drained it in one go, not leaving a single drop.I pulled him into my arms, trembling, my chest aching unbearably. "Ethan… say it again…"His body stiffened.Gradually, something felt wrong with my body. Only then did I realize that something had been put in the water. As my breathing grew labored, he shoved me away and ran. "You're so gullible!
